Residents seeking to get their civic grievances redressed can now do so by registering their complaints on their smart phones. A mobile application (app) launched by the Greater Chennai Corporation some months ago makes it easy to register complaints regarding a host of issues. The ‘Namma Chen-nai’ app can be downloaded on the Google Play Store for those having smart phones that run on Android platforms.
“Some residents are making effective use of this app to get
their grievances in respect of civic issues addressed. However, awareness about the ‘Namma Chennai’ app is yet to reach many other residents in different parts of the city including our n e i g h b o u r h o o d s o f Mogappair and Anna Nagar,” said an official of the Anna Nagar Division of the Greater Chennai Corporation.
The official said that once the app is download-ed people have to register their mobile phones, while giving details such as Aad-
haar Card number and residential address is op-tional. “Complaints can be lodged on a range of issues. The app has provisions for highlighting issues relating to garbage dumping / clearance, conditions of parks and playgrounds that are maintained by the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion, public toilets, roads and footpath, street lights, water stagnation or other general issues. One has the option of registering a complaint with a photo of the scene or without it too. Our officials will then take steps to redress the said grievances,” the official, requesting anonymity, said.
The app also has an op-tion to register complaints about building plan viola-tion and unauthorised con-
struction or illegal encroach-ments. Even complaints regard-ing property tax collection, levy of professional tax and trade li-cence can be lodged through the ‘Namma Chennai’ app.
According to the official, the app can also be used as a tool to apply for birth / death certifi-cates online.
However, many residents, when asked, were ignorant of the availability of the app. “I did not know that such a mobile ap-plication existed. In fact when there was water stagnation near my house recently due to over-flowing sewerage, I did not know whom to approach and simply left it as I did not want to person-ally visit the local office of the Greater Chennai Corporation. Now that I am aware, I will use the app to register any grievance in the future,” said Gnanamoor-thy, a resident of Sixth Block in Mogappair East.

Plea to shift composting yardSir,
I am a resident of Mogappair Eri scheme, ward-91, Zone-7. Corporation is carrying out ma-nure composting in an open yard in a residential area using the waste vegetables and fruits etc on the 4th Mani road, Mogappair Eri scheme. The process is emit-ting harmful gases with foul smell. It has become a breeding ground for Mosquitoes and flies. Possibility of contamination of
ground water also cannot be ruled out. There is much risks of Children falling ill. We have headaches frequently.
We have represented to corpo-ration officials and requested them to shift the composting yard from residential area. In Nun-gakambakkam, the composting is done in cremation ground. Inspite several reminders there is no respone. Requesting the au-thorities concerned to to take action at the earliest.

Entry to Gangai Amman Koil Road Turns Steep
By N Rathi Chithra
The entry to the Gangai Amman Koil Road in Mogappair East has turned steep after the recent civic works that were carried out at the beginning of the Church Road from the Maduravoyal New Bridge end.
The approach to Gan-gai Amman Koil Road, which also connects Mogappair East and Mogappair West, previ-ously was not on an elevat-ed level as the culvert was at the road level. However after road digging and pipeline laying works were
taken up on a massive scale at the beginning of the Church Road that went for many months, the to-pography of the approach road to Gangai Amman Koil Road changed drasti-cally. Now a temporary mud road has been laid on the culvert that has made it steep for motorists to climb.
“Earlier we had only one problem. The parapet wall covering the canal near the culvert was dam-aged and we had com-plained about it as there was a risk of motorists or some pedestrians falling into the ditch at night. But
now the topography of the approach road has changed causing inconvenience to motorists,” said Stephen, a local resident of Gangai Amman Koil Road.
Since traffic simultane-ously moves towards Church Road and Gangai Amman Koil Road, driv-ers of cars complain that they are finding it difficult due to the elevated road level. “Since vehicles keep coming, we are unable to negotiate this stretch while driving a car. It becomes difficult to wait to drive up the steep road while you also have oncoming vehi-cles from Gangai Amman
Koil Road to the Church Road,” said Rajendran, who drives a tourist taxi.
Not many drivers are comfortable waiting at an elevated road. “I have been driving a car for a year but am still not confident of passing through an elevat-ed road unless I simply zip through instead of waiting. But the moment I have to wait near an elevated stretch due to traffic, I turn nervous as I fear that the vehicle might reverse and hit the cars or scooter just behind me. Now I have to encounter this each time I pass through this point,” said a young executive. Locals hoped that the civic authorities would come up with some solution to en-sure that the approach road to Gangai Amman Koil Road is levelled.

Several recent studies have revealed that ap-proaching fitness as a social activity has sev-eral benefits. New England researchers tracking medical students over 12 weeks found that working out in a group lowers stress by 26 per cent and significantly improves quality of life. By contrast, people who exercise individually generally put in more effort but see no lifestyle or stress differences.
“The communal benefits of coming to-gether with friends and colleagues, and doing something difficult, while encouraging one another, pays dividends beyond exercising alone. The findings support the concept of a mental, physical and emotional approach to health that is necessary for student doctors and physicians,” say researchers.
There are many health benefits of working out in a crowd but one of the most significant would be a mental benefit or mood boost. When you are in a class surrounded by inspir-ing, goal-driven people, you are able to push yourself harder, and by smiling and cheering you release endorphins that are a natural pain reliever and happiness booster, say researchers.
Group classes are often filled with encour-agement, good vibes and energy not only from the trainer but from classmates as well, creating a bond, building relationships and giving you the purpose of coming back again even if you find things difficult. That’s in addition to other benefits such as strengthening the cardiovascu-lar system, increasing the body’s range of mo-tion, mobility and flexibly, improving stamina and endurance. Agencies

The Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) of the Tamil Nadu police and Tas-mac authorities raid-ed three bars attached to Tasmac wine shops last week for selling alcoholic beverages round-the-clock.
PEW Anna Nagar inspector Prabhu said four people were ar-rested for illegally marketing liquor in the bars. Two bars on
Kal iamman Koi l Street at Koyambedu and two bars on Golden George Rath-nam Road in Mogap-pair were raided at 10.30 am and was found to be selling liquor.
Following the sei-zure, four were ar-rested from the bars and cases registered against them under the Tamil Nadu Pro-hibi t ion Act . As
many as 106 liquor bottles were seized from the accused, it was learnt. The raids were jointly conduct-ed by PEW and Tas-mac officials.
Disregarding rules, the bars had doubled up as wine shops and were selling liquor round the clock to patrons. These li-censed deluxe bars attached to Tasmac wine shops were sup-
posed to provide only snacks for the con-sumers as per the pro-hibition and excise rules. However, the bars were operating on the lines of liquor outlets with a sales-man offering Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and beer for customers. They were also marketing the alcoholic beverages at inflated rates.
The PEW of the Tamil Nadu police has further recom-mended that Tasmac authorities seal the bars, police said.

At a time when horror flicks looked to be down and dusted, debutant director Raju Viswanath is confident that his 3D effort titled Lisaa (a bilingual) will break all the nuances attached to a ghost-drenched movie. The movie opened to a good opening last Friday.
An assistant of Vikram Kumar and other big names, Raju said the moment it was decided to go for a full fledged 3D horror movie, the first thing he and producer-cine-matographer Muthiah did was to to do away with the overdone ele-ments of a haunted place, a bunch of four friends, a ghost with scary over-the-top make-up trying to scare away all and sundry and above all, a predictable revenge angle. Stepping away from such cliches and shooting the whole movie in a 8K helium camera in-stead of changing it into a conventional 2 k format and converting it into 3D has been the X factor.”When we did not have a bud-get like the 2.O it made sense to create the en-tire movie in 3D to give a delightful visual expe-rience. As a producer, Muthiah did not com-
promise on the budget. If it is a night shot, it was canned only in the wee hours, for the effect would have been lost”, he said.
Was Anjali the only choice, going by the media reports? “We had a few names in mind but An-jali was top in the list. Settling for her was a spot on decision, An-jali having the ability to speak both the languages and in her ability to use her eyes for the best effects. She effortlessly slipped into her character of a brave girl, unfazed by the sordid happenings all around her. Having always played the typical, lower middle class girl, unsure of her next meal, she has braved the odds to lend total cred-ibility. Sam Jones, who left his mark in ‘Eamali’ has matched Anjali, playing her love interest. With names like Brahmananand and Yogi Babu, the comedy seg-
ment is on a higher notch, rolling well with the theme and content.”
On a 3D movie for starters, Raju said he had often wondered why movies like ‘My Dear Kuthi-chathan’ is not being made when the technology has so much ad-vanced. The title was to rung in the scary feel and the children are going to love every bit, happy with the U/A tag. Muthiah’s camera and the music of Santhosh Dhay-nanidhi are the two big draws. A sample of that was evident in the trailer launch at IMAX Prasad in Hyderabad. Viewing it in IMAX will be the ideal experience which could be a privilege for only a sec-tion of the audience. Getting well over 350 theatres in Tamil Nadu has been a boost.
traffic jams increase near roundtanaBy N Rathi Chithra
Traffic jams have be-come the order of the day near the Anna Nagar Roundtana due to ongoing works being undertaken by contractors engaged by the Chennai Metro Rail Limited in the vicinity. Motorists complain that
the waiting time at the Anna Nagar Roundtana traffic signal has increased between five and 10 min-utes. The vehicle pile ups can be seen till a few hun-dred metres away during peak hours in the morning and evening.
The Chennai Metro Rail Limited is undertak-
For director Igor, it was a dream come true to dwell on the caste conflicts and the havoc it wreaks on the aspiring youth. In his fourth film, the director said he had put a disclaimer on the evils of the caste syndrome along with the mandatory one on the evils of liquor.
Giving credit to the in-spiring storyline of Ben-gali writer Swapan Prad-han, who had doubled up to play the main lead, Igor said he was moved by the novelty of the storyline which brought to shreds the agony of the ones, at the receiving end of the caste-based issues.
Roping in the popular Marathi actor Makarand Deshpande - who has played supporting roles in scores of Hindi films be-sides directing five - Igor saw the victory lines to the well penned script. “I had a job at hand to pen the dia-logues which should speak for the intended message. Picking up the female lead was a relatively easy deci-sion, the only choice being Manjitha Jith. She has the knack of portraying charac-
ters belying her age and her understanding of the script has enchanced the story value. In underplaying her character, she has enhanced the flow of the content. Music composer Mujib, aided by the lyrics of Guhan Pugazhendi, have brought to light the feelings of the love-struck couple, hard pressed to find means and resources to eke out a sim-ple life. The world is theirs but they have no clue to the elements lurking around them to make their life mis-erable.”
As a parting shot, Igor says a common man never asks for the caste of the bank manager, who ap-proves his loan. “All these issues crop up only when the stomach is full and the idle mind turns sadistic.”
Has Igor come out with any suggestions and reme-dies for the vexatious issues? “You cannot teach the adults, with grown up chil-dren. At best, the message can only be relayed that ‘Live and let live.’ That is the bottomline of the script which does not meander at any stage.”
STEERING ClEAR of the cliches in a horror flick
ing some works right in the median of the road close to the Anna Nagar Round-tana. Besides, works are also going on the left side of the road that leads to Anna Nagar East and ICF. Both these factors have led to traffic jams.
As it is the Fifth Avenue stretch of Anna Nagar that connects Thiruman-galam with Roundtana is one of the busiest roads in the neighbourhood with thousands of vehicles passing through it. Though the completion of the first phase of Chennai Metro Rail Limited’s works on the stretch led to widening of roads as well as opening of two-way traffic, the lat-est works have created a traffic bottleneck at the Roundtana Junction.
“There have been occa-sions when I have pa-tiently waited for more than five minutes ahead of the Anna Nagar Junction for the traffic to clear up and proceed for my office in the mornings. The wait-ing time is irritating as we would be late to report to
office and are accountable to our bosses,” said Hari-kumar, a resident of an apartment on 12th Main Road.
Traffic police belonging to the Anna Nagar wing agreed that the waiting time has increased at the Roundtana junction. “Yes there is a pileup of vehicles for a few hours everyday when everyone is proceed-ing to office, college or school in the morning and returning home in the eve-ning. We just can’t help it as we have to regulate movement of vehicles in such a manner that there is no accident. The Round-tana is one such area where you witness vehicular movement from multiple ends,” said a Chennai City Traffic Police personnel.
“To avoid this traffic jam, vehicles coming from Thir umangalam and headed towards Anna Arch can take a right turn at Blue Star junction to-wards Shanthi Colony and proceed from there as the traffic there is less,” he said.

A 48-year-old realtor committed suicide after sending a video clip to his friends saying that he was forced to take the extreme step due to heavy losses in his business, in Madura-voyal. The deceased, Chinnaraja of Venkatesh-wara Nagar, was living with his wife Rita (46). His son was killed in a road accident three years ago and his daughter got mar-ried last year.

He forwarded it to his close friends in the real estate business. Those who saw the video on
WhatsApp tried to reach him over phone but it was switched off. They im-mediately informed the police control room and rushed to his house to inform his wife. However, he was found hanging from ceiling when they reached his house. His body was sent for post-mortem examination to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.
