Grow
your owntomatoes!
Sowing seed
Tomatoes are very easy to grow fromseed. Alternatively you can buy tomatoplants from late spring from garden
centres and are a good option where youcant maintain the right conditions forgermination and growing on.
Sow seed in early spring for outdoor crops, and late winter for growing in an unheatedglasshouse. Seed can be expensive, butusually only a few plants are needed, andgermination is usually good.
Fill 9cm (3in) pot with seed ormultipurpose compost
Level and rm the compost, then water Sow seeds on the compost surface,
spacing them evenly, about a nger-width apart, to prevent damping offdisease
Cover the seed with a layer ofvermiculite
Keep at approximately 21C (70F),ideally in a heated propagator, untilseedlings emerge
Transfer seedlings to a heatedgreenhouse or, although less good, asunny windowsill
Seedlings emerge after about vedays. Place them in the best possiblelight (such as a greenhouse) and at atemperature of around 18C (65F)to prevent seedlings becoming long, thin and leggy. Leggy plants producetheir rst owers high up on the plantleading to a bare, unproductive lowerstem.
Pricking out
Seedlings should be large enough to prickout into separate pots of multipurposecompost two weeks or so after sowing:
Ideally, ll pots two days beforepricking out, water well, and allowto warm up to room temperature toreduce the chance of the seedlingsdamping off
Hold seedlings by their cotyledons(seed leaves) to avoid damage to thedelicate stems
Make a hole in the compost big enoughto take the roots and lightly rm theseedling in place
Water in with tepid water Reduce the temperature to 16C (60F)
when plants reach 15cm (6in) high.
Growing on
Ideally, grow on in a glasshouse (or failingthis, a well-lit windowsill), spacing plantsso that their leaves never touch to avoidlegginess. About a month after prickingout, the plants will be ready for plantinginto their nal positions this is indicatedby the rst owers showing their yellowcolour. The stress of being grown in theconnes of a pot promotes owers earlierthan in less stressful positions, such asgrowing in the ground.
Cultivation notes
Whether you raise plants from seed or buyyour plants, they can all be grown in thesame way.
PlantingPlant outside in early summer. In unheatedgreenhouses, planting can take place inmid-spring. Set plants 40cm (16in) apartand water in well.
Watering and feedingRoots should be kept moist but neverwaterlogged. Pots and grow-bags requirefrequent watering. Feeding isnt essentialfor soil-grown plants, but those in bags orpots benet from regular feeding, usingtomato feed and following manufacturersinstructions.
Fruit setTomato owers self-pollinate readily. However, indoor plants benet from beinggently shaken to dislodge the pollen. Mistingowers with water can help fruit set.
HarvestingPick fruits as required, with the calyx (stalk)still attached. When cropping slows in earlyautumn, green fruits can be gathered andkept in a warm, dark place to ripen.
ProblemsIn a warm summer, tomatoes are easy togrow if they are well watered. However, problems can occur, with fruit ripening, fruit splitting and cracking, leaf problems, stem problems, blossom end rot, tomatoblight, tomato leaf mould and tomato
viruses.
