OVERVIEW OF LINKEDINhttp://learn.linkedin.com/what-is-linkedin LinkedIn is a business-oriented networking site that allows registered
users to maintain connections of people they know and trust in business (i.e. networks).
Users can invite anyone (whether a site user or not) to become a connection.
Your network on LinkedIn consists of: 1st degree: Your direct connections 2nd degree: The connections of each of your direct connections 3rd degree: The connections of your 2nd degree connections (3rd degree
connections).
Your network can be used to: Gain introductions to others through mutual, trusted connections. Find jobs, people and business opportunities recommended by
someone in your network. Be visible to employers who list jobs and search for potential
candidates. Review the profile of hiring managers and discover which of their
existing contacts can introduce them.
WHY SHOULD YOU BE LINKEDIN?
Huge global reach: 70+ million users, 95% of whom have a college degree, and the average user age 41 (64% male, 36% female)
The power of recommendations (i.e. your references)
The ability to form and join groups of common interest for networking, and sharing business and employment opportunities
Companies use it to post jobs, and candidates use it to search for jobs
Recruiters use it to source passive candidates: the traditional “job boards” are too expensive and over-saturated, and companies want people, not resumes
IMPORTANT TIPS FOR NEW USERS
LinkedIn is intended for business professionals to connect with others who they trust, know, and whose work they can recommended
“Open networking” (i.e. connecting with anyone just to amass connections) is discouraged
LinkedIn suspends or revokes membership privileges of users who practice “invitation spamming”
