Lesson 1.03 “Dividing Decimals”

Important Information:

Dividing Whole Numbers

• Step 1: Determine the place value where the quotient will begin.

• Step 2: Calculate how many groups of the divisor can be shared in equal whole parts.

• Step 3: Multiply the number in the quotient by the divisor and place this product directly under the dividend. Be

sure to line up the digits and use place value when multiplying!

• Step 4: Subtract this product from the dividend.

• Step 5: Repeat Steps 1–4 with each new difference until all place values have been used. Remember to write the

remainder if one exists.

Dividing Decimal Numbers

• Step 1: Move the decimal point in the divisor to make it a whole number. Move the decimal point the same

amount of spaces in the dividend.

• Step 2: After moving the decimal point, bring the decimal point above the division bar into the quotient.

• Step 3: Determine the place value where the quotient will begin.

• Step 4: Divide using the same process as with whole numbers.

• Step 5: If there is a remainder, tack on zeros to the end of the dividend and continue dividing until there is no

remainder, or round the quotient to the nearest thousandth.

Example: What is the quotient of 8,688 ÷ 22?
