University of the Pacific AREA OF SCHOLARLY INTEREST: Mental health and aging (broadly). My research and clinical program focus on the application of behavioral/environmental interventions for clinical problems and mental disorders in midlife and older adults. Specifically, my research program spans the areas of behavioral gerontology; the application of behavioral/

environmental interventions for clinical problems and mental disorders in aging and behavioral medicine; the application of knowledge gained from biopsychosocial and behavioral research to understanding health and treating illness. My research in these areas has targeted several important clinical problems associated with aging including medical issues that have a behavioral component (e.g., dehydration, diabetes), depression, sleep disturbances, and cognitive impairment. This research involves an exploration of how psychological, behavioral and environmental factors may contribute to the development and management of physical and mental health conditions associated with aging. TEACHING INTEREST My teaching interest revolves around multi-level education. My teaching philosophy centers on using and creating an Active Learning environment. My experiences as an educator are consistent with research on Active Learning that demonstrates that individuals learn better when the material is meaningful and interesting. Thus, in addition to didactics, I utilize a variety of strategies in the classroom to engage students including opportunities for practice (online and in vivo), discussion, applied/practical assignments, and in-class activities.
