WELCOMEWelcome to Black History Season (BHS) 2012 celebrating Independence. We are delighted to be hosting BHS for the second year and are really pleased to have secured fundingfrom Leicester City Council and Arts Council England which allows us to introduce BHS Live. BHS Live offers opportunitiesto emerging UK Black artists across all art forms to creatework and aims to create a space that nurtures new talent and introduces contemporary voices that bring fresh aesthetics to the stage.
This year’s programme pays tribute to the 50 years of independence for Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago with LintonKwesi Johnson, whose words have become a part of Britishhistory, carving out the relationship between the Caribbeanand the reality of the UK. The Jamaican fever in Leicester continues with Dune, who present a celebration of Bob Marley with Catch a Fire. Ballare: To Dance is a collaboration of classical music with non Western musical instrumentationlike the steel pan at the heart of the composition. NardoBrudet’s exciting and controversial exhibition, Slaves of Holland, launches BHS to challenge the audience and the notions of Independence, freedom and emancipation.
BHS will be taking place across the city at all the major venues including Curve, Phoenix Arts, Embrace Arts, in addition to events taking place in your local community library. BHS has something for everyone - music, dance, film, poetry, education so please come along and celebrate Independence at one of the fabulous events taking placeacross the city.
Serendipity would like to say a big thank you to all those that have contributed to BHS and supported us in co-ordinating and programming this fantastic season of work.

MESSAGE FROM PETER SOULSBYIn this year, where we are celebratingthe fiftieth anniversary of the independence of countries includingJamaica, Algeria and Uganda, it’s fittingthat independence is the main themefor this year’s Black History Season.
This year has also seen the world cometogether and come to London forthe Olympic and Paralympic Games. We’ve seen athletes from Jamaica,Algeria, Uganda and many otherAfrican and Caribbean countrieswinning gold medals, and we’ve alsoseen members of the African andCaribbean communities here inBritain winning gold medals as well, demonstrating powerfully how our diversity as a country makes us stronger.
Black History Season enables us torecognise the enormous contributionsAfrican and Caribbean people havemade to our city of Leicester andthe wider world. It has become a significant part of the city’s culturalcalendar.
As City Mayor, I’m delighted to havethis opportunity to express my verybest wishes for the success of thisyear’s Black History Season. I’d liketo thank everyone who’s participating, organising and performing duringthe many events and celebrationsthat will take place, and also thankSerendipity for organising this year’sprogramme.
I hope everyone has a great Black History Season!
