Setting the SceneSweets and confectionery were a thriving trade in Victorian times. Many of the chocolate and sweets we know today were first manufactured in the nineteenth century.
Set up a sweet stall in a corner of your classroom, using brightly coloured cloth and streamers. Place different types of sweets in jars and set these out in rows on the stall.
What to DoSeat your learners around the stall. Guide your learners to explore the texture and smell of the sweets and, where appropriate, to taste them.
Find a simple sweet recipe that your learners can participate in making, for example chocolate balls covered in coconut or sprinkles. Encourage your learners to take part in stirring the mixture, rolling out the sweet shapes and decorating the finished product.
