The increasing number of students from multi-

cultural or multilingual contexts is a growing

challenge for ELT. Students are hypothesized

to develop a culturally more complex and

flexible way of thinking and speaking for them-

selves as a result from the constructivist dy-

namics of a trilingual classroom. These children

are part of one of the Faculty of Education re-

search projects, “The Mayan Youngsters Pro-

ject: the trilingual classroom”

These young children from El Coro Yidzat il Kay

de Dzidzantún, represent one of the new chal-

lenges you will have to deal with as an English

language teacher. Get to know them! Be in-

los alumnos del quinto semestre de la

LEII. Sin embargo, tenemos la contribu-

ción de un estudiante de séptimo que

nos habla de su experiencia de servicio

social.

The personal results that I got

from being part of this program were

that it has given me a really valuable

experience as a teacher. There is no

doubt that I had the opportunity to

acquire those tools and abilities that

cannot be obtained during the degree

classes and which are really important

in the professional practice. Besides, I

had to deal with problems that are

common in a classroom. This made

my experience even richer and

helped me to be more prepared for

my professional future.

On the other hand, this pro-

gram gave me the opportunity to put

into practice all the topics that I have

seen during the degree classes, and

has helped me to understand even

better the background of my degree.

In addition, I was able to share with

my classmates some experiences,

opinions and real life situations,

making me part of my own

classmates learning.

Finally, this project

has also let me im-

prove my skills as a

teacher, for example,

all those that relate to

patience, nerves con-

trol, classroom man-

agement, giving in-

structions, etc. How-

ever, one of the most

important teaching

skills I learnt was

time management. At the be-

ginning of the first course I

had to prepare almost 10 ac-

tivities for the classes because I was

not able to know how much time my

students will take to do one of those

activities. Now, I am better able to

work out how much time an activity

could take. I have also improved my

English skills, like pronunciation, for

example, this way I can be a good

model for my students.

There is no doubt that I advise

my classmates and friends to take ad-

vantage of any opportunity like this, of

being part of this kind of social service

program. I fully recommend the Facul-

ty of Education to provide the students

chances for acquiring teaching experi-

ence, a real experience in front of a

classroom, so they can obtain and im-

prove their abilities and skills that only

with professional practice they can get;

this is the only way for them to finish

their degree as prepared as possible

and with the necessary tools in order to

succeed in their professional careers.

Currently, I’m taking Traducción de

Textos as a subject, and I feel much

more confident in dealing with differ-

ent languages because I have a back-

ground on the topic and also in prac-

ticing translating.

In some way, I can say that the Inter-

pretation course offered me the tools

to become an intermediary between

English and Spanish speakers in my

career. My experience was beneficial,

not only in terms of improving my

linguistic abilities, but also in terms of

my own personal growth.

I appreciate all the support from my

instructor; I think he put a great effort

to help us achieve our goals. I was

able to obtain the tools that I will need

to continue training and improving

my linguistic abilities in the future, but

I think I can still learn more.

By Enna Rosa Castillo Carrillo

My learning experience taking the

Interpretation course at the Faculty of

Education last year was helpful to my

career development and further study.

Although the course was very intense,

I liked it and it opened doors to my

career path, because it was the first

time I took an interpretation course

and it was my first approach into this

area.

During the course, we had many op-

portunities to practice actual interpre-

tation and also do some translation.

We learned the different strategies

and kinds of interpretation, so that we

were able to analyze our skills and

realize how good we were and what

our weaknesses were.

SUMMER COURSE EXPERIENCE

-INTERPRETATION-

My experience was beneficial, not only in terms of improving my linguistic abili-ties, but also in terms of my own per-

sonal growth.

Introducing yourself to the

world of English classes is a

step you have to take in order

to start getting familiar with it

and to start practicing to be a

good teacher.

I wasn’t able to take summer

courses this year

because of my

economical situ-

ation, so I de-

cided to start

giving English

classes at home

to some kids

that were going

to start high

school. They were all beginners;

however, they had knowledge of

some aspects of English, such as

some numbers and colors.

It took me some time to decide

whether giving the English classes

or not because it is a great respon-

sibility and it takes time to plan

the classes, but in the end I think I

made the right decision.

I gave the classes

only for the sum-

mer

vacation but I am

planning to keep

doing it. It is a

very good experi-

ence. I really learnt

a lot and started

losing the fear of teaching. I be-

came more responsible and or-

ganized. I will never forget this

experience.

So, if you are planning to start

giving English classes, start

know. It is really helpful for fu-

ture experiences, jobs and refer-

ences. You will not regret it.

Enjoy it! “You not only earn

money but great learning”

The first day I was really nervous because I

didn’t know if I was going to do it well or

if I was going to explain things right, but

throughout the class I started feeling com-

fortable and confident. At the end of the

day I felt really happy and excited to con-

tinue with the classes. My students were

quite cooperative and they liked the class.

I used some colorful materials such as

cards, posters, drawings and games. They

enjoyed using that kind of stuff.

Most of the students don’t

know that there is a basket-

ball team in our faculty. But

there is one for girls, which

is now participating in the

“ Juegos Deportivos Univer-

sitarios” where we have the

chance to play against other

faculties of UADY.

Faculty of Education’s

Basketball team

It is a good opportunity for girls

to do a sport because is a way to

get distracted from school, to do

something different and to make

new friends. It is important to say

that it is not just for LE or LEII

students, but also for girls who

study at CIL or are exchange stu-

dents.

It is a great experience where stu-

dents have a lot of fun and coexist

with different people as equals

because it is a mixed female

crowd of the whole school..

Some of my classmates that

attended this club say that it

was great because they had

the opportunity to practice

their speaking skills while talk-

ing about topics that were of

their interest, and because

they had the chance of shar-

ing their thoughts with the

whole group. They talked

about different things such as

movies, music, restaurants,

places to go on vacation,

among others.

From my point of view, this is

the best way of improving this

skill because English is not only

about academic purposes

but it is also about communi-

cation. I am pretty sure that

there are many students who

will be willing to attend this

club when it starts again.

By José Muñoz Irigoyen

It is said that the best way of

improving any skill is by practic-

ing it; that is why I think that or-

ganizing and starting a language

club will be very useful and help-

ful for those students who are in-

terested in improving a language

skill, in this case the speaking

one.

I am pretty sure that this club is

going to work because it was put

into practice before and was at-

tended by many students, but un-

fortunately it came to an end.

University life has a lot of con-trasts. We can see a clear difference in school-styles across the schools of UADY, such as, Medicine stress-ing times of study, Mathematics with an intense homework and ex-aminations and, of course, the last minute rushes and close relation-ships of the LEII here at the School of Education.

However, when we talk about con-trasts, there are contrasts that actually matter to us as students. That is to say, the elective subjects.

Elective subjects in a degree as new as ours can sometimes seem unor-ganized, and there is a fair reason for them to seem like that. They are so.

Such is the case that, as a fifth se-mester student, I look back and regret not having taken certain subjects and I also feel relieved to have skipped cer-tain others.

To mention some examples of sub-jects that are well placed and should never be skipped under any circum-stances, we have teacher Blanquita’s Academic Skills class. This class is aimed towards helping you become a better student by teaching you several important skills such as note taking, organization and studying efficiently.

On the other hand, we have some classes, such as teacher Betty Novelo’s Didáctica de la Gramática del Español, which is definitely not bad, yet it seems misplaced within the program in 3rd semester. The word misplaced can be justified by looking at the following semester which has the compulsory subject Classroom Management, which teaches for the first time some vital points such as, seating arrangement and giving instructions. Looking back at the syllabus for teacher Betty’s subject, we see that the final activity is a micro teaching, without any kind of formal preparation on what manag-ing a class is! This can lead to trau-matizing experiences for some stu-dents, as in the words of one of them:

Choosing your Elective Subjects

Think UP

Page 9: Learn it Play it #3

Facbook

This should not be misunderstood.

The class is great, but it would be better if it was placed further on in the

program of the degree. Or even if it swapped places with Classroom Manage-ment. As a matter of conclusion, we can only say that one must be very careful before choosing the elective sub-jects. In the end, they are not going anywhere and if you feel unprepared for a cer-tain point of a class, you can always ask the more advanced students about their experiences and con-sult the teacher for advice.

09

“As personal experience, it was

really awful. I had the worst Micro Teaching experience ever, Besides the lack of preparation in the subject that I was supposed to teach, I didn’t know much about how I was supposed to give the class. Before taking the Class-room management class I didn’t have any idea that you are supposed to organize the groups before giving the instructions of the activity. The micro teaching activity wasn’t as bad as it sounds for the others in my class, but for me it didn’t work. It would be really helpful to have had the Classroom Management class before Didáctica de la Gramática del Español, just to not look bad with the foreigners that were helping in the class”.

Nowadays teachers and students

can make use of a spectrum of tools

or materials that the world possess-

es in order to take advantage of

them for learning or teaching.

TV is one of these materials, mak-

ing emphasis on the TV series that

are very popular in our society.

Watching TV is what the majority

of people do for relax-

ing or relieving them-

selves from the pres-

sure of work or study.

This is the reason why

we can use TV series

as a different learning

object or strategy for

students. They could be a good

strategy for teachers to use in their

courses. But, unfortunately, they

have not been widely exploited.

Regarding students, some of the

benefits of using this educational

tool would be learning vocabulary,

such as idioms and colloquial ex-

pressions, and why not? they can

also practice and improve their

One of the TV series we think

teachers should take advantage of, is FRIENDS, a sitcom about six friends

who live on their own; they are in the struggle to survive in the real world

and to find success and happiness in

life, but they also find companionship,

comfort and support that they get from each other to be the perfect

antidote to the pressures of life.

Honestly, this TV show has helped us

in increasing our vocabulary, besides that the dialogues and the charac-

ters’ speech are very clear, not too fast and contain a real and colloquial

lexicon which makes the language understandable for the audience.

We have also learnt some idioms and

expressions or phrases that are not

grammatically correct .

TV Series as Educational tools

Think UP

Page 11: Learn it Play it #3

11

But despite that they use them be-

cause those phrases are already part

of their everyday

English vocabulary,

for example the

famous “How you

doing?” of Joey

which is not gram-

matically correct

but anyway it be-

came very popular in regular spoken

American English.

Currently there are lots of comedies

that make us laugh and from which

we can learn a lot, and what a better

way to learn from something that we

like and which is also enjoyable for us.

A topic that had caused controversies

on the students of the Faculty of Edu-

cation has been the elections for the

president of Sociedad de Alumnos.

Last October 11th

were the elections

and apparently

Oscar Ciau, from

5th semester of the

degree in Educa-

tion had 5 more

votes than Melis-

sa Gómez, from

5th semester of

Education too, but the organizing com-

mittee decided to penalize him with

some votes. Because of the penaliza-

tion, Melissa resulted winner of the

elections, but the students who voted

for Oscar were dissatisfied, so they

went on a kind of strike to show their

unconformity. Students from Tizimin

came to the school to know what was

happening and school authorities were

involved to stop all this mess.

There’s no need to fight for power. All

this is supposed to be for the students,

their needs and for their own good and

it has been losing

its purpose. No

matter what the

result is, the im-

portant issue here is

that the one who

results the winner,

actually worries for

the students and

make some changes

for their needs and

wants.

Who is Barbie Harp? By Adriana Medina Definitively Barbie Harp is a mystery for the Mexican society. Barbie Harp is a twitter account that criticizes famous and important people and events, mainly in México. The mystery is that nobody knows who she is, but everyone knows her, and also follows her. She is known as a special girl that likes to travel, going to parties, shopping and things like that. She always tweets thing related to important and private events and she is always

criticizing other people, because she thinks that there is no better thing that laugh at the people that don’t know how to laugh of their selves. Some people have interviewed her in twitter but she has never said who is behind that account, but in those interviews she has said that for her twitter is a trendy way to be informed about

the topics that are important for us, and also to know about our favorites singers or other fa-mous people. I think that if you have a twitter account, Barbie harp is a good option to follow someone who makes you laugh a lot.

Did you know that?

Poetry in motion by Alfonso Marrufo Guevara

Poema 2

Y vuestra presencia y vuestro encanto, he de deciros…

¡Subliman, oh Princesa, tu presencia, tu sonrisa y tus besos!

Y si por lo anterior vos sintiere

Que he escrito algo que vuestro corazón repeliere

decidme sin dudar que es aquello que mi ser disidiere

y lo que vos deseáis…

¡que con el corazón en la mano yo hiciere!

The Princess and the Witch

Once upon a time, there was a remarkably beautiful Princess whose greatest enemy was a horrible desire-repressing witch, who, as you, dear reader may be intelligently guessing, lived within her. Had this Princess not done what she truly needed, everything would’ve turned to chaos in her life. This witch had actually been created by the Princess herself, and by then, she had become a slave of her own creation. Yes, dear reader, you may think that if she had had the power to create this horrible creature, she would’ve also had the power to destroy it. Although unaware of her own powers the Princess might’ve been, she decided to take a friend’s advice, an advice which somehow made her feel as if she were in another world, a world of her own thoughts. The Princess found out that the witch became weaker every time she followed the advice. So she kept repeating the process, and the witch kept growing weaker and weaker until one day, the inner monster died. You’re probably wondering, dear reader, what the advice might’ve been, and wouldn’t I be a monster myself if I didn’t tell you? Yes, I will tell you: read as many books as you can, have as many thoughts as you want, for life is short and it’s better to kill our demons while we can.
