April GMM WHEN Monday, April 4 WHERE Bessie Smith Center
APR 2016 • ISSUE 10
During the month of April, Junior League of Chattanooga members have not one but two opportunities to learn from the inimitable Vicki Clark. Often called “the Oprah of Junior League,” Vicki is a beloved presenter at AJLI conferences whose sessions are frequently standing-room only.
She has spent the past 30 years of her life inspiring the leaders of diverse organizations ranging from the National Education Association and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to the Centers for Disease Control and the American Bar Association. Formerly the Vice President of Community Initiatives for the Points of Light Foundation, Vicki also served on the national program planning committee of Colin Powell’s President’s Summit for America’s Children. She is currently a member of The Peter F. Drucker Foundation’s leadership training and consultation team as well as a Senior Governance Consultant for BoardSource.
While JLC’s Cross-Council meetings are typically limited to members in slated leadership positions, Vicki is too special for us not to share with the entire League. Her presentation on Sunday, April 3, is open to all Provisionals, Actives and Sustainers and will focus on being fully present for your League experience in order to reap the greatest rewards. (Attendance is required for all slated positions, including committee chairs, co-chairs and assistant chairs.)
Vicki will also headline our GMM on Monday, April 4, where she’ll speak about squeezing every bit of awesomeness out of your League membership. This GMM is the perfect opportunity to invite prospective members to join you so they can find out what the League is all about.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Much of my public relations work over the past
20 years has shown me that people will tell you
what they want from you if you simply ask them.
Over the past year, I’ve asked JLC members at
all levels what they want from their League, and
your board of directors and I have worked hard
to make many of these things happen.
Provisionals asked us for more opportunities
to step directly into leadership positions,
particularly when they have professional
experience to share with the League. I’m very
proud that our Nominating Committee proposed
a leadership slate for the 2016-2017 year that
gives many of these women a chance to shine
right out of the gate, and I can’t wait to see what
fresh ideas they bring to our organization as
they work alongside our seasoned members.
Sustainers wanted us to provide more benefits
for their membership investment, and we’re
doing that with several opportunities over the
coming weeks. The first is an afternoon tea
with AJLI President Ellen Rose*, who is visiting
Chattanooga for a governance session with the
JLC board. Sustainers will have the opportunity
to talk with Ellen about the direction Junior
League is heading on an international level
and how she sees the growth and changes
affecting our League.
Sustainers also told us they were interested in
learning about JLC’s accomplishments over the
course of the League year, so we’ve planned
a State of the League luncheon specifically for
them on May 20*. We’ll share success stories
from this year’s Community Engagement
outreach, give them a sneak peek at the
Designer Showhouse, and introduce them to the
new Provisionals who have joined our League.
Actives asked for more opportunities to hear
from leaders outside the League. This year’s
Education & Training presentations have
featured TEDxBarcelona speaker Dr. Shelley
Prevost of the Lamp Post Group and Torch,
a panel of elected officials from Hamilton
County’s state legislative delegation, Carlene
Carrabino of MomForce Network, Terran
Anderson of the American Heart Association,
and television personality, author and nonprofit
executive Alison Lebovitz. That’s a pretty rock
star lineup! We have two more Education &
Training keynotes this year, and you won’t want
to miss them. The incredible Vicki Clark will
speak at the April GMM (see page 1 for more
details), and this is an excellent opportunity to
bring friends with you to the meeting. Members
and prospective members alike will benefit
from Vicki’s infectious enthusiasm and years of
nonprofit experience.
Last, but by no means least, GPS Head of School
Dr. Autumn Graves will present the keynote
at our annual dinner in May. She has been
involved with several Junior Leagues across the
country as a Provisional, Active and Sustainer,
and JLC members at all levels are sure to enjoy
her awesome girl power presentation.
Are there other things you’d like to see in your
League? I’m listening!
* Sustainers, please see the postcard enclosed with your League Chatt and delivered by email for more details about these events.

The April selection is Daring Greatly by Dr. Brené Brown. Join us for a lively discussion about the book and ways it can positively impact our lives. Space is limited, and registration is available at jlchatt.org on the Membership Calendar. Participants earn one Education & Training membership credit, and Sustainers are welcome!
About the book: Every day we experience the uncertainty, risks and emotional exposure that define what it means to be vulnerable or to dare greatly. Based on 12 years of pioneering research, Dr. Brené Brown dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and argues that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage.
Brown explains how vulnerability is both the core of difficult emotions like fear, grief and disappointment, and the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, empathy, innovation and creativity. She writes: “When we shut ourselves off from vulnerability, we distance ourselves from the experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives.”
Daring Greatly is not about winning or losing. It’s about courage. In a world where “never enough” dominates and feeling afraid has become second nature, vulnerability is subversive. Uncomfortable.
It’s even a little dangerous at times. And, without question, putting ourselves out there means there’s a far greater risk of getting criticized or feeling hurt. But when we step back and examine our lives, we will find that nothing is as uncomfortable, dangerous and hurtful as standing on the outside of our lives looking in and wondering what it would be like if we had the courage to step into the arena—whether it’s a new relationship, an important meeting, the creative process or a difficult family conversation. Daring Greatly is a practice and a powerful new vision for letting ourselves be seen.

The 2016-17 ActiveLeague dues deadline was March 31. *Provisionals will be invoiced after the Annual May DInner on May 2.*
Your $300 dues (for Actives) include: • $123 for JLC membership dues • $43 for AJLI dues • $135 for Personal Fundraising Contributions
You may notice a slight $25 increase in JLC membership dues this year, the first of its kind in many years. As costs to operate a successful nonprofit rise, so does the necessity of occasional rate increases. We appreciate your support. Dues payments may be made by credit card through the JLC eStore at www.jlchatt.org. Through the eStore, you also have the opportunity to spread your payments over our six-month payment plan for a nominal convenience fee. Your initial payment will be $54.16, and Pam will contact you to formally set up the remaining payments. If you prefer to pay in full by check, you may drop your payment off to Pam Atherton in the League House during the business hours of 9a.m.-4p.m., Monday-Thursday. Regardless of payment option, you are welcome and encouraged to increase your contribution to JLC by designating additional funds to one or more of our special programs: 1917 Society membership ($500 above general dues); the Annual Fund; the Endowment Fund; the Member Scholarship Fund; and/or the JLC House Renovation Fund. As part of JLC’s Strategic Plan, the Finance Committee is developing a three-year budget in lieu of our typical one-year budget. This is a challenging feat for any organization but significantly so for such a diverse, active organization like the JLC. If you have experience with long-term budgeting (or would like to gain some financial knowledge along with us) we would appreciate your help! Email [email protected] if you are interested.

TREASURER’S REPORT
After many months of planning and transition, JLC has finally initiated the switch and consolidation of banking from Bank of America and BB&T to FirstBank. I would like to recognize JLC Executive Assistant Pam Atherton and Am-ber Gardner for their work to make this process smooth and seamless, and Kelsey Sabin for her leadership during this transition. Thanks to all of you! There have been no significant expenses or deposits during this past month, although rumor has it that the inaugural Holiday Soiree was a fantastic fundraising success!
