PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
We have been extremely busy over the last 3 weeks with so much happening around the
school.
We are very excited with the launch of our new Facebook page. This will be used as a
platform to celebrate all the good news stories that are happening at the school. It is a
great way to share photos and keep you up to date with weekly events.
White Ribbon Breakfast was an enormous success. Thanks to the parents who coordinated
the food for the breakfast. You all went above and beyond our expectations and the whole
school community is extremely grateful for the hard work and dedication that went into
organising such a successful event.
The White Ribbon breakfast and special assembly was attended by many important
guests such as White Ribbon Ambassador and channel 7 and TV host, Andrew O Keefe,
our local member of parliament Jason Clare, representatives from Condell Park High
School, The Smith Family, Craig and Kane from Bankstown Youth Development Services
who worked with our Boys Respect Group to compose, perform and record their Rap
representing the important messages of White Ribbon Day, to upload it onto YouTube.
We are so proud of their success and hope that the power of their voices, empower others
in society, through social media to contribute to changing our society in a positive way into
the future. The group also performed on Friday night at the White Ribbon march in
Lakemba. Thank you to Mr Muller for attending this event with the boys.
The school was featured in a story by Andrew O Keefe on Chanel 7 Sunrise outlining the
successful morning and the very important messages from some of our students. Please
follow the link below to watch this episode.

Last Wednesday, Wattawa Heights was nominated to showcase the outstanding learning
opportunities that are offered to our students across K-6 in the area of STEM (Science
Technology Engineering and Maths). Our school hosted a very successful professional
learning opportunity for 30 teachers from across various schools in Sydney. The
Professional Learning Division of Mac1 and Harvey Norman Business and Education,
nominated Wattawa Heights for this event as we are definitely leading the way in the area
of using technology such as iPads for coding and purposeful learning that is integrated and
allows for collaborative problem solving, fostering creativity in students. The visiting
teachers got to learn about our school’s journey of learning and how to best use
technology to plan 21st century learning experiences. They then had the opportunity to
observe the class programs in action and ask our students questions about what they were
doing with the technology. K-2 students demonstrated how they used the App Scratch
Junior to create a story using their own characters and setting. Years 3 and 4 students
created a game using the App Hopscotch and Year 5 and 6 students explained how they
coded spheros to move through mazes and perform Olympic games events such as sprints
and swimming. They also used the App Hyperpad to design a game that summarises their
understanding of the novel Rowan of Rin that they were studying in class.
Congratulations to Mrs Azzopardi, Mr Toland and Mr Robberds for hosting an excellent
experience for the students as well as the visiting teachers. The survey results showed that
the day proved to be a huge success and it was rewarding to hear all the positive
comments from colleagues at other schools, who were extremely impressed with how well
the school has progressed in this area.
This week we celebrated the outstanding achievements in behaviour for our Principal Award
Winners for 2016. I had the privilege of sharing a morning tea with the K-5 students and a
pizza lunch with the Year 6 Principal Award winners and their parents. Congratulations to
these students, we are very proud of you.
Song Room was a great success this semester. Years 3, 4 and 5 had the opportunity to
show case the talents that were gained through their participation in the program. A huge
thank you also goes out to the parents who worked on the Community Art Values mural.
This has added a beautiful touch to our main hall and is a reminder of our strong community
partnership.
Next week is a very busy week with lots of events on the calendar. Make sure you have downloaded
the Skoolbag App and follow us on Facebook to ensure that you keep up to date with what is
happening.
Don’t forget our last social function for the year! We are looking forward to seeing lots of families.
The last day for payment will be Monday 13th December.
As this is the last newsletter for 2016, I would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication
that comes from our wonderful teaching staff who always go above and beyond what is expected of
them to ensure that your children, our students, are offered the best possible learning experiences.
To our very supportive Student Learning Support Officers, Mrs Saroufim, Mrs Samrani, Mrs
Chemaisse and Mr Ben, thank you for the continual support they give to the individual students
that they work with. Thank you to our office administration staff Mrs Hotton, Mrs Paris and Mrs
Saroufim, our general assistant Mr Wilkinson and our cleaners, Peter and Stephanie, who ensure
that the every day running of the school is taken care of.
This last semester has been very rewarding for me as I embarked on the position of Relieving
Principal. Although it has been challenging at times, I can say that even after 18 years at the school
I still enjoy the challenges that are encountered as part of being a leading educator. It has been
wonderful watching the community come together and be part of the many successful events that
we have had this year. The school cannot be what is without the support of the parents and the
community.
I look forward to another challenging term next year and take this opportunity to wish you all a very
safe holiday and all the very best for 2017.
Mrs N. Comninos
