OPPORTUNITY
The goal of this case study was to validate water savings for turf irrigation utilizing Rain Systems' Precision Injection Machine (PIM) method of implanting hydrogel into existing turf at root zone level through a minimally invasive technique. In order to prove the efficacy of the PIM technology, Rain Systems injected Soil Moist (1) hydrogel into the mixed stand of Kikuyugrass (Pennisetum clandestinum) and Common bermudagrass (Cynadon dactylon) at LAUSD turf test sites at a depth of 3” into the soil, while keeping the grass pristine.
The pilot was conducted at El Sereno Middle School, 2839 N Eastern Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90032, a Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) campus for which the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) provides water and electric service.

PRECISION INJECTION MACHINE INNOVATION
Rain Systems' Precision Injection Machine (PIM) is the innovation and working prototype of Jim Sibert's patented technology. Jim discovered that hydrogel products such as Soil Moist (1) and Broadleaf P4 (2) were used to reduce irrigation for crops and for landscaping. He became intrigued by the fact that while many others had attempted to build a machine that could put these water saving soil amendments into lawns and turfgrass, no one had yet succeeded. Once he finalized his design and filed for patents, Jim received his first patent within 12 months and the second within 2 years. Jim worked with NASA fabricators, Navy submarine valve engineers and an Artificial Intelligence software engineer to help him build the working prototype of the PIM. Jim Sibert and Elaine Sibert started Rain Systems and became a Portfolio Company at the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator in 2016. Since that time, they have implemented pilots with California State University Northridge and City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks (3).
The PIM has the unique ability to implant hydrogel into existing turfgrass at the root zone level, while keeping the turf pristine, even on short-cut turfgrass. Using computer controlled pin-point water injections, the PIM implants hydrogel between 2" - 8" into the ground, while simultaneously metering the exact amount of hydrogel necessary to each injection point. It is designed with the capability to adjust to different types of soil and turf.
The technological advances of the PIM allows Rain Systems to price our services at a fraction of our competitors. Our installation time is more than twice as fast, pays for itself within 6 months and each treatment is fully effective for 3 years.

HYDROGELS
Hydrogels were developed decades ago as an environmentally friendly soil amendment to improves the water and retention capacity of soil. Rain Systems PIM implanted Soil Moist (*) at El Sereno Test Areas #1 and #2, a hydrogel product that is EPA tested, non-toxic, fully effective for 3 years and 100% biodegradable. Once the hydrogels are in the ground, they absorb and store water and nutrients typically lost in drainage and evaporation, then slowly release it back to the soil as needed. Hydrogels continuously provide water to the roots of the grass while enhancing nutrient uptake as well. This keeps the soil hydrated, leading to fewer days of irrigation and a reduction in water consumption for turf irrigation by up to 50%. These soil amendments have been effectively used in agriculture and landscaping for decades, where they were able to mix it into the soil before planting. Rain Systems developed the PIM technology in order to introduce these water saving products to the managed turf industry.

During the 5-month case study with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), Rain Systems' PIM hydrogel installation maintained green, healthy turf while reducing irrigation an average of 34%, saving 26,933 gallons of water for the 7,020 SqFt area of Kikuyugrass/Bermudagrass. Soil moisture readings were 20% higher in Test Area #1, Front Lawn South versus Control Area #1, Front Lawn North. The projected 3-year cumulative water savings, based on Rain Systems installation of hydrogel throughout the entire El Sereno MS campus, which has 3.5 acres of irrigated turf, would be 4MM gallons of water and $57k in water cost savings.

The following methodology was implemented during the pilot:
Test Area #1, Front Lawn South: Rain Systems' PIM implanted Soil Moist hydrogels into Kikuyugrass (Pennisetum clandestinum) and Common bermudagrass (Cynadon dactylon) turf plot areas at a depth of 3" below the surface into the root zone of the turf. Per the manufacturers recommendation of 5 lbs/1000 sqft , 35 lbs of hydrogel was installed into this 7,020 sqft test area.
Control Area #1, Front Lawn North: No hydrogel was installed. For the purposes of this case study, Front Lawn North is the control area for comparison of turf condition with Test Area #1, Front Lawn South. No changes were made to the irrigation schedule of the Control Area #1, Front Lawn North, while the irrigation schedule for Test Area #1, Front Lawn South was reduced.
Test Area #2, Soccer Field, Zones 1 - 3: Rain Systems PIM implanted Soil Moist hydrogel into Kikuyugrass (Pennisetum clandestinum) and Common bermudagrass (Cynadon dactylon) turf plot areas at a depth of 3" below the surface into the root zone of the turf. Per the manufacturers recommendation of 5 lbs/1000 sqft , 126 lbs of hydrogel was installed into this 25,574 sqft test area.
Control Area #2, Soccer Field, Zones 4 - 5: No hydrogel was installed. For the purposes of this case study, Soccer Field, Zones 4 - 5 are the control area for comparison of turf condition with Test Area #2, Soccer Field, Zones 1 - 3.
Rain Systems performed catchment testing for Test Area #2, Soccer Field to measure sprinkler head functionality and distribution uniformity.
Soil testing was conducted in this case study to determine the role that the hydrogels play in enhancing turfgrass plant nutrient availability in the upper root zone during the testing process.
Soil testing was conducted by Logan Labs LLC out of Lakeview, OH
Soil results, analysis and recommendations were performed by Paul Cushing, Agronomic Turfgrass Services
Photo documentation was taken with drone aerial camera photographs as well as photos at ground level
Soil moisture conditions and readings were monitored and collected with a Turf Tec International Digital Moisture Sensor soil water meter

LAUSD personnel reduced the irrigation schedule for Test Area #1, Front Building Lawn South from 3 cycles/week to 2 cycles/week x 15 minutes/cycle. This was a reduction of 34% to the overall turf irrigation for Test Area #1, Front Lawn South.
SEPTEMBER 14. 2018
Soil Moisture readings taken for Test Area #1, Front Lawn South and Control Area #1, Front Lawn North. Test Area #1 showed 20% higher moisture readings than Control Area #1, even with 34% reduction in irrigation to Test Area #1 during this time.
DECEMBER 18. 2018
Rain Systems met with LAUSD personnel to review the condition of the turf and discuss final steps of pilot for Test Area #1, Front Lawn South at El Sereno MS. The turf in Test Area #1, Front Lawn South was visually as green and dense when compared to Control Area #1, Front Lawn North turf.

This case study validates substantial water savings utilizing Rain Systems' patented PIM method of implanting hydrogel into the upper 3” of the turf root zone. During the 5-month study period, water usage was reduced by an average 34%, saving the District 26,933 gallons of water in the 7,020 sqft test area. The turfgrass canopy on the Kikuyugrass/Bermudagrass lawn remained strong in Test Area #1, Front Lawn South and thrived while improving the turf quality on the surface through the increased uptake of water and nutrients with the use of the hydrogels.
Hydrogels continuously provide water to the roots while enhancing nutrient uptake as well. The added effectiveness in the Rain Systems PIM injection process of installing hydrogel into turf at root level can also be seen in the percentage of moisture found in the soil. Utilizing the Turf Tec International Digital Moisture Sensor, moisture readings in Test Area #1, Front Lawn South (Treated) were over 20% higher in comparison to Control Area #1, Front Lawn North (Untreated). Thus exhibiting the water holding capabilities of the hydrogels even though irrigation water usage was reduced by 34% during the same time period. This strongly displays the effectiveness of the hydrogels to retain moisture and allow the turfgrass to thrive while saving substantial water.
Even with higher than normal temperatures and rainfall of just 3.98" (2.59" of which occured on December 5-6, 2018), Rain Systems' installation of hydrogel into turf helped reduce irrigation and maintain healthy grass during the 5-month study. Hydrogels are highly effective for 3 years, which will contribute to continued water savings through the summer of 2021.
In conclusion, at Test Area #1, Front Lawn South at El Sereno Middle School, the turf remains healthy with above average density and moisture holding content, as evidenced in the photographs within this study. During the 5-month case study, water usage in Test Area #1, Front Lawn South was reduced by an average 34% and 26,933 gallons of water were saved in the 7,020 SqFt area of Kikuyugrass/Bermudagrass.
The projected 3-year cumulative water savings, based on Rain Systems installation of hydrogel throughout the entire El Sereno MS campus, which has 3.5 acres of irrigated turf, would be 4MM gallons of water and $57k in water cost savings.

Per the manufacturer's recommendation of 5 pounds/1000 sqft, 126 pounds of hydrogel was implanted into TEST AREA #2, SOCCER FIELD, ZONES 1 - 3, which is 25,574 sqft of Kikuyugrass/Bermudagrass. No hydrogel was installed into CONTROL AREA #2, SOCCER FIELD, ZONES 4 - 5 for turf comparison purposes.

Irrigation system not working properly, LAUSD personnel working to locate and repair problem areas.
Of special note, pertaining to TEST AREA #2, SOCCER FIELD, ZONES 1-3, which received an application of hydrogels with the PIM at a depth of 3” below the soil surface in the root zone on June 13 - 15, 2018. Due to irrigation deficiencies and mechanical issues with the irrigation controller, the study was inconclusive and unable to move forward with a conclusion. However, on September 14, 2018, Paul Cushing was able to monitor the soil moisture levels with the Turf Tec International Digital Moisture Sensor. After taking extensive moisture meter readings on both TEST AREA #2, AND CONTROL AREA #2, it was found that TEST AREA #2, ZONES 1 - 3 (TREATED) was holding an average of 22% more moisture in the upper rootzone than the CONTROL AREA #2, ZONES 4-5 (UNTREATED). This was a surprising outcome, considering the inconsistency of the irrigation system. The ability of the hydrogel to hold on to moisture, even in the dry areas, was a true demonstration of the efficiency of the water holding capabilities of the hydrogel.

The test areas were soil tested to determine the soil chemistry in the upper 4” of the root zone. Test Area #1, Front Lawn South and Control Area #1, Front Lawn North were tested in September of 2018. The results in both area’s soil results came back with elevated levels of sodium (salts) which had accumulated from the existing irrigation source (water). TEST AREA #1, FRONT LAWN SOUTH soil results came back at 254 pounds/acre in sodium. CONTROL AREA #1, FRONT LAWN NORTH soil results came back at 284 pounds/acre in sodium. Both areas would be considered excessive in sodium, as these numbers should be less than 50 pounds/acre.(8) The sodium numbers would be considered detrimental for long term viability of the hydrogel, turfgrass root and shoot development.
The interpretation for correcting the soil chemistry was made by Agronomist Paul Cushing in September of 2018. The recommendations were for multiple applications of gypsum(12), a leaching irrigation to push the salts out of the root zone, then replacing the sodium with applications of potassium. This leaching process with the calcium was put on hold until the gypsum material could be approved through the LAUSD Office of Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS).
However, after the follow up soil test results in January 2019 came back, the numbers showed a substantial decrease in the amount of sodium in the upper 4” of the root zone by 65% in TEST AREA #1, FRONT LAWN SOUTH over the 5-month period. The follow up numbers showed the TEST AREA #1, FRONT LAWN SOUTH had reduced from 254 pounds/acre to 89 pounds/acre in sodium. This reduction in salts allowed for the hydrogel to better store water without breaking apart under the influence of sodium, which in turn allows for longer efficacy of the hydrogel material over a longer period.
To ensure the highest possible water savings, Rain Systems recommends annual soil testing in order to assess sodium levels and apply Calcium Products(12) when necessary, based on analysis of soil lab results. Monitoring the soil chemistry will safeguard the health of the soil structure and protect the integrity of the
hydrogel, which in return will improve the quality and long-term sustainability of the turf.
Note: CONTROL AREA #1, FRONT LAWN NORTH did not exhibit improved turf appearance or enhanced soil chemistry based on the results of the 2nd set of soil tests from January 2019.

TEST AREA #1, FRONT LAWN NORTH (7,020 sqft of irrigated turf)
TEST AREA #2, SOCCER FIELD (45,000 sqft of irrigated turf)
Based on soil sample testing of Test Areas #1 and #2 at El Sereno MS, Paul Cushing, Agronomist, made the following recommendations in order to reduce sodium levels and maintain proper soil chemistry. Rain Systems recommendations include soil testing annually after installation for the 3 year life cycle of the hydrogel, to ensure the highest possible water savings.
Three (3) individual applications of Gypsum - Calcium Products SO4 @ 15#/1000 ft. Leach that night with at least 1 hour of water (or time application prior to flushing rainfall) to displace sodium. Apply Gypsum applications 4 weeks a part in schedule.
Two (2) individual applications of Signature 24-4-8 @ 1# N/1000 ft. (4.2# product/1000 ft.) Applications should be made at 8-week intervals.

eyes. There have been reports of conjunctivitis, chronic rhinitis, laryngitis, pharyngitis, impaired sense of smell and taste,
bleeding from the nose and reactions of tracheal and bronchial membranes in exposed workers.
