PERIMETER ROAD @ UNIVERSITY DRIVE
The plan aims to improve accessibility to pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit users of the Cal Poly community by making design recommendations for conflict areas on campus. A notoriously busy loop on campus trafficked by all modes of transportation, Perimeter Rd. at University Dr. will become a one-way bus only route with Class IV cycle tracks to ensure pedestrian and bicycle safety and encourage non-auto travel.

THE CONCEPT
Focused around the cinema/museum, the jewel of the design is the park. On a plinth, the park slopes out towards N Field to a height of 15 feet. Cinema and park by day, by night an outdoor theater with films projected onto the cinema’s facade. Retail, artists’ lofts and a residential tower surround the park to create a lively new downtown hub. To stitch the site together, N Field street has been redesigned to allow pedestrians to comfortably and safely flow throughout the site.

UCSF MISSION CENTER
An outdated building, the existing UCSF Mission Center is in need of more efficient and pleasant office space. Looking to develop on its own parking lot, UCSF asked the students of Cal Poly’s Urban Design Program to come up with a structure that could house office space, retail, and parking while giving back to the community with public space and a clinic.

As an institution devoted to “advancing health worldwide,” UCSF’s commitment to its city will continue through the redevelopment of UCSF Mission Center. Although an extension of UCSF facilities, the University is giving back by creating a place for neighbors to meet in its public plazas and by fostering health by through a quality, affordable clinic.

HIGUERA PLAZA
Located at the northern edge of downtown San Luis Obispo, the project re-imagines a gas station and car dealership into a pedestrian-oriented, mixed-use development. It features a grocery market, retail space, and parking structure to accommodate residents and guests. In addition, it has a spacious plaza and a public garden space above the retail to boast the views of Madonna. To access the rooftop park, there is an elevator and a bridge to connect all the residential units to the garden. The concept expands local transit with a station on Higuera Street to complement and connect to San Luis Obispo’s already thriving downtown.
