Late or No Prenatal Care Late prenatal care: Beginning prenatal care in the third trimester
Why is it important to receive early and regular prenatal care?
- Reduce the risk of pregnancy complications by:
- Receiving important information on health topics such as healthy eating, regular exercise, medications, and prenatal vitamins
- Monitoring potential health problems through physical exams, weight checks, blood and urine tests, and ultrasounds
- Managing existing medical conditions (ex. high blood pressure and diabetes)
- Opportunity to have discussions about significant issues with your health care provider:
- Effects of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug use on the baby
- HIV testing
- Physical and verbal abuse
- Breastfeeding
What are the risks of beginning prenatal care late or receiving no prenatal care at all?
- Illness or death of the mother or baby
- Preterm birth (<37 weeks gestation)
- Low birth weight (<2500g) baby
What are some barriers to beginning prenatal care during the first trimester?
- Unavailability of appointments
- Lack of money to pay for prenatal visits
- Not receiving a Medicaid card early enough to begin care
- No available childcare
- Unable to acquire transportation to appointments
