Fire ghters have been heading out into com-munities and helping food banks for as long as food banks have been around.
In Lake Country, it’s no di erent. But this year the department will be able to hit more homes than ever before in the third year of a growing program introduced by a local realtor and one-time food bank user.
e program will see most residents in Win- eld receive bags to place
non-perishable food items in for pick-up by the re department on Dec. 2.
“When it comes down to it, there are 12,000 people in Lake Coun-try and another 3,500 to 4,500 people who live in the area but are outside of the district limits,” said assistant chief Brent Penner. “ ere is just not enough of us to get to every home. LAKE COUNTRY’S Communities in Bloom Committee for 2013: From left to right:Ursula Christen, Steve Scha rick, Jamie McEwan, Shannon Jorgenson, Dan Bruce and Sheila Gunn.

e District of Lake Country received one of the coveted Five Bloom awards handed out at the annual Communities in Bloom provincial award ceremony held in Kam-loops recently.
Communities in Bloom judges point-ed out great numbers of volunteer hours spent on environmental action in Lake Country and identi ed an extensive list of projects complet-ed this year by a variety of groups including the concept and develop-ment of the Quail Trail.
“ is year we took what we learned from the previous two years of the Communities in Bloom program and highlighted more of the great things that our community is doing,” said Coun. James Mc-Ewan, Communities in Bloom committee chair-man.
“ rough the hard work of our sta and community volunteers, we have now been recog-nized as a 5 Bloom com-munity. What I appreci-ate about the Commun-ities in Bloom process is that it gives us a chance to re ect on the amaz-ing things that are hap-pening in our commun-ity, highlight them, and learn what we can im-
prove on in the future,” McEwan said.
e Communities in Bloom program is all about getting people in-volved in making their community a better place in which to live, work, and visit. Inspiring cit-izen and civic involve-ment in enhancing the community’s resilience and livability is a primary goal of the program.
“Lake Country is like one giant park,” noted judges Don Alberg and Teresa Williams. “It was very evident there is a very friendly and cooperative working re-lationship between the council, district sta , vol-unteers, the Commun-ities in Bloom commit-tee and other community groups.”
Lake Country’s 2013 CiB submission featured the theme Celebrating Youth Involvement.
“We can see that by involving youth you are going the right way in getting future genera-tions to protect the area you truly love,” recog-nized judges Alberg and Williams. “We can see that this is a district that takes great pride in their surroundings. Congratu-lations on a most suc-cessful year.”

is is the third year that Lake Country has participated in the CiB program and the com-munity has really gotten behind the program, ac-cording to the DLC.
“We went from a two-bloom rating in the rst year, to four blooms last year and now the high-est award, ve blooms,”
said Steve Scha rick, director of commun-ity and customer servi-ces. “ I was very pleased with the judges’ acknow-ledgement of the above and beyond e ort of our parks team in mak-ing Lake Country an extraordinary commun-ity. We have a very com-mitted group of season-al and full-time sta that are creative and visionary
in their work.”Among the initiatives
to get youth involved were several di erent projects, from volunteer-ing in community clean-ups and food bank fund-raisers, to having youth representatives at regular council meetings.
“Youth are continu-ously playing a posi-tive role in our commun-ity,” said McEwan. “I’m
very proud of our com-munity, and honoured to have been a part of Lake Country’s Communities in Bloom team. What makes this community special is the high level of involvement of our en-tire community, and I want to take this oppor-tunity to thank everyone who spends time making Lake Country an amaz-ing place.”

to easily help out the food bank. More bags will be distributed to homes in Win eld while drop o boxes will be put out in the commun-ities of Carrs Landing, Okanagan Center and Oyama.
“In the rst year we just did the Lakes sub-division and in the second year we expanded to ve or six di erent areas in Win eld and we got way more response,” explained Royal LePage realtor Kim Davies, who started the program. “Last year we doubled what we got and I really believe we can double it again this year as we are going to reach even more homes.”
Davies approached the re department to help with their annual drive because she once used the services of food banks when living as a single mother in Vernon.
Knowing the re de-partment’s reach was limited by time, Davies canvassed some friends and colleagues and de-cided to make it easier for residents and the re- ghters.
“We will take as many areas as we can and drop bags o at the door with a note asking them to leave non-perishable items outside,” she said. “It just makes it so much quicker for the re de-partment.
“ e food bank is a vital part of our com-munity. It’s personal for me. I can’t imagine where I would have been if I didn’t have access to the food bank,” Davies said.
At Lake Country re hall #1, Penner said it’s a partnership within the
community that is mak-ing a big di erence. Fire- ghters have just one day to volunteer their time and Davies’ program al-lows them to reach more homes, getting out into more parts of the Lake Country community.
“ e guys like it,” he said. “It’s a way to give back to the community. It’s been well-received. We’ll turn on the lights as we are going through the neighbourhood.
“It’s an opportunity for people to see the re- ghters,” Penner said. “We get questions about recruitment or about the re hall so it’s a great night for us.”

On the evening of Oct. 8, Kelowna RCMP received a report of a sus-picious vehicle in the al-ley between Smith-son Drive and the 1700 block of High Road in Kelowna.
A silver Ford sedan bearing truck plates was located, with two occu-pants.
e vehicle was un-insured and while the male driver was issued a violation ticket the fe-male passenger was ob-
served with American currency, which police had reason to believe was counterfeit. A search re-vealed several Amer-ican $20 and $50 bills, many with the same ser-ial number, and she was arrested for possession of counterfeit curren-cy. A further search re-vealed small quantities of crack cocaine and crys-tal meth.
As a result of the seiz-ure and information pre-viously obtained through
an ongoing counterfeit-ing investigation, RCMP executed a search war-rant on a well-known residence on the 1800 block of High Road. Items believed to be as-sociated with the pro-duction of counterfeit money were seized and a Kelowna man was ar-rested.

“In my rst meeting with the BCTF, and I gather this is character-istic of all rst meetings with education ministers, the TF advises that yes, they are a union, but rst and foremost they are social activists and agents of social change,” Abbott recalled.
eir buzzword is “so-cial justice,” which is portrayed by leftists as superior to plain old jus-tice, in ways that are sel-dom de ned.
So what exactly are the goals of this “social change”? Here’s some of what I’ve gleaned.
Parents may recall the 2008 introduction of an elective high school
course called Social Jus-tice 12. is was mainly the result of intense pro-test by a couple of gay activist teachers, and the ministry curriculum de-scribes its emphasis on inclusion of racial, cul-tural and sexual di er-ences.
at’s all good, and it’s now bolstered by urgent-ly needed anti-bullying and empathy e orts at all grades.
en there is the BCTF version. It’s not just a battle against “ra-cism, homophobia and sexism” but also “poverty and globalization.”
e BCTF has a quarterly “Social Justice Newsletter” lled with
predictable econom-ic assumptions. Read-ers of the latest issue are reminded at length that the United Nations takes a dim view of Can-ada’s record on human rights, including a right to housing. Unde ned “poverty” statistics are cited, although Statis-tics Canada has nothing but incomplete relative measures.
One article describes a social justice club for Grade 2 and 3 students, with activities that in-clude collecting food bank donations and “writing to the premier asking for a system-ic plan to address child poverty.”
Leaving aside wheth-er eight-year-olds can understand what “sys-temic” means, this rhet-oric is taken directly from the tired old NDP policy book. It rests on the cherished myth that poverty is imposed by right-wing governments that refuse to double the minimum wage and pile more taxes on “the rich.”
And what about that darned “globalization”?
e BCTF still has a 2001 teaching guide on its website promoting the claim that Nike is uniquely guilty of mak-ing shoes and exer-cise gear in ird World sweatshops.
Teachers are to in-struct students how to organize a boycott of Nike, thus passing the received wisdom of cam-pus radicalism to the next generation.
is was all debunked years ago. Are Adidas, Reebok, Apple and Microsoft any di erent? Has nothing changed in 12 years? A quick web search will show this is a stale old tale with a con-venient villain, to avoid complex questions.
A BCTF o cial as-sures me this unit is be-ing updated. Once that one is done, maybe they could check over their teaching unit on En-bridge’s Northern Gate-way proposal, another labour of the union’s “so-cial justice” truth team.
Entitled: What We Stand To Lose With Pipelines and Super-tankers, it boasts wildlife
photos and “key sources” from the left (Canadian Centre for Policy Al-ternatives) to the far-left fringe (Pipe Up Net-work). It is another pro-testers’ guide designed around a pre-determined viewpoint.
BCTF bosses love to talk about the import-ance of “critical think-ing.” ese one-sided caricatures of Nike, En-bridge and other familiar villains seem designed to produce the opposite.
ey remind me of George Orwell’s classic novel 1984, where loyal party members are re-quired to focus on select-ed enemies in a daily rit-ual called the Two Min-utes Hate.
Perhaps this is a clue to why our school system produces so many stu-dents lacking in employ-ment skills and burst-ing with demands for government-imposed wealth redistribution.

Earlier this month I had the oppor-tunity to partici-
pate in the grand open-ing of the new Rutland Transit Exchange and the announcement of three new vicinity buses to service Kelowna and area.
Many students, sen-iors, residents and com-muters all rely on tran-sit services every day to travel, commute and get to school.
at is why our gov-ernment has invested more than $10 million to improving transit in the Kelowna area, since 2001. ese investments help make transit more attractive, reduce conges-tion and encourage more people to ride the bus.
Like many B.C. com-munities, we have seen tremendous growth and with that growth is a need for more transit service.
Families, commuters
and residents of Rutland will enjoy this new, mod-ern exchange, with wide sidewalks, seating areas, artwork and decorative lighting.
All of this is part of the Rutland Tran-sit Improvement Pro-ject, which includes three new bus pull-outs on Highway 33, pedestrian upgrades on Dougall Road, bus stop improve-ments between Doug-all and Rutland roads, and extending Shepherd Road to accommodate
transit service. e Rutland tran-
sit exchange forms part of Kelowna’s Frequent Transit Network. e frequent transit net-work is a fancy way of saying that passengers will get reliable and fre-quent transit service—with buses running every 15 minutes during peak periods.
e new exchange will also provide passen-gers with direct access to the nal phase of Rapid-
Bus when it’s complete in the fall of 2014.
Last month, the pre-mier was in Westbank to kicko construction for RapidBus on the West-side, which includes ex-tending the service from downtown to West Ke-lowna and the Westbank First Nation.
Once complete, the entire RapidBus route will provide 30 kilo-metres of service be-tween UBCO and West Kelowna, saving people even more time.
Ridership has grown by almost 500,000 rides across the Kelowna regional transit system since RapidBus started in 2010, and is expected to grow even more with the expansion of Rapid-Bus to the Westside.
is new exchange wouldn’t be possible without the $1.4 mil-lion contribution of the federal government, our provincial government,
which contributed $2 million, and $1.1 mil-lion from the City of Ke-lowna. e investments were made in the transit exchange, and in the re-vitalization of the Rut-land Town Centre.
ere have been sev-eral major infrastructure improvements in our re-gion in the past year.
Keeping our roads safe and e cient is im-portant, but there’s more to improving and maintaining our infra-structure.
E ective public transit allows our communities to grow, attract further investment, and gives residents more options in their daily lives.
e opening of the new transit exchange will mean a clean, safe place for residents to wait for the bus and more e -cient transfers.

When your money is not properly al-
located, you may not be able to meet your nan-cial objectives.
Here are com-mon sense tips to get you started focusing on short- and long-term goals.
Identify your nancial goals and then ask your-self how long it will take to achieve these goals.
Time horizon is a very important compon-ent as it de nes an ap-proximate date in the fu-ture when you need to access your money. You need a reasonable time frame to achieve any -nancial goal.
A short term goal can be time frame within a year or within ve years; saving for Christmas or a new fridge will fall into the one year time frame.
Five years can cover a more expensive purchase
such as a vehicle or per-haps retirement.
Short term and long term goals can compete against each other.
Life changes can af-fect your goals and change a short-term goal into an immediate goal, or a long-term goal into a short-term goal.
An example is a healthy person plans to retire in 10 years and this is considered a long term goal, however, due to health reasons now
has to retire within six months.
e period of time to achieve a long term re-tirement goal has now been reduced to months instead of a decade time frame.
An investor pro le questionnaire can help determine what kind of investor you are—it only takes a few moments for you to compete and helps you determine if you can withstand mar-ket volatility. Determin-ing your risk tolerance is an important compon-ent of achieving nancial success.
What is your com-fort level or degree of ac-ceptance in regards to investing? e sooner you need the money, the more conservative you’ll need to be. In each cal-endar year, there will be highs and lows when you invest in xed income or equity markets. Short-
term saving and invest-ment goals should be ap-proached conservatively, while longer term goals can tolerate more risk.
Know what kind of investor you are.
Some investors want to bail out of the mar-kets when a temporary market decline occurs. If you are a nervous Nelly kind of investor, you may choose to stay with con-servative investing and saving strategies. In a low interest rate environ-ment, it is di cult to grow your savings.
e average interest rate on a one year GIC is one per cent, making the compounding growth of savings a slow process.
Investing in equities with a long term horizon helps minimize the im-pact of short-term mar-ket volatility. A longer time horizon reduces the risk to equity exposure.
Combining your short
term goals and long term goals can be used with a mixed strategy of savings and investing.
Start with a three-month emergency source of money sitting in a daily interest account as the rst step in achieving your nancial goals.
You can then choose a building block of using a balanced mutual fund for a blend of xed-in-come and equities and an equity position for your long term investing goals.
Focus on achieving your short- and long-term objectives within the risk tolerance you are comfortable with now and in your future.

A n oncoming Silverado pick-up truck loses
traction in icy road con-ditions, crosses the centre line and smashes head-on into an oncoming car, a Chevrolet Cobalt.
e impact occurs en-tirely in the oncoming lane.
On the face of it, it seems like a “cut-and-dried” case of negligence against the driver of the Silverado.
Not necessarily so if the Cobalt is equipped with three well-worn all-season tires and one summer tread tire.
e crash occurred on Green Lake Road near Okanagan Falls on Dec.
19, 2008. e trial was in June, 2011.
I found the case when doing a little re-search for this column, my topic being the sea-sonal warnings by the RCMP to have our vehi-cles equipped with prop-er tires for winter driving conditions.
e lawsuit was brought by the driver of the Cobalt who was seeking fair compensa-tion for his injuries and losses arising from the crash. I expect that those injuries and losses were signi cant.
 e evidence, which
included “black box data” and engineering opin-ions, was carefully re-viewed by the trial judge.
e judge came to the conclusion that the driver of the Cobalt had temporarily lost control seconds before impact, the loss of control at-tributed to the poor tire tread coupled with over-driving the icy road con-ditions.
e judge accepted that the driver was prob-ably in the process of re-gaining control at the time of impact.
at temporary loss of control is something that has happened to most, if not all of us, countless times in icy road condi-tions.
We seem always to be testing the limits of the traction between our tires and the road.
We hit that point of temporary loss of con-trol, there is a brief mo-ment of panic as we re-gain control, and then we carry on at a slight-ly slower speed hav-
ing found that “traction speed limit.”
ink, for a second, how dangerous that is.
Goodness! How about the alternative op-tion of assessing the con-ditions, adjusting our speed accordingly, and never losing control.
e driver of the Silverado reacted. Yes, in retrospect, he reacted poorly.
Had he simply carried on without hitting his brakes, the crash would never have occurred.
In the heat of the mo-ment, he locked up his brakes, causing the truck to slide into the oncom-ing lane.
We don’t have the bene t of calm, cool, col-lected thought in the heat of the moment, though, and the law doesn’t expect that of us.
e judge found the driver of the Cobalt to be the one entirely at fault and dismissed the law-suit.
 e decision was ap-pealed. e highest court
of this province, the Brit-ish Columbia Court of Appeal, upheld the de-cision.
e seasonal warn-ings of the RCMP refer to nes that they will impose against driv-ers of vehicles that are not equipped with prop-er tires for winter driv-ing conditions. I believe the nes are in the $120 range.
I have provided you with an example of a legal case where a claim for injury compensation was dismissed, in part, because a driver didn’t heed those warnings.
e nancial conse-quences to that driver was probably tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars.
What about the real consequences? What about the injuries suf-fered by the occupants to the vehicles involved in this crash and the oc-cupants of the countless other crashes that occur because of improper tires and overdriving winter driving conditions?
What about the deaths?
How oblivious must we be to the real con-sequences of dangerous driving behaviours if we could be in uenced by the risk of a $120 ne?
I wish everyone a safe winter driving season.
Let’s make it more

Make safe roads a goalHERGOTT FROM A6
O to the best start in West Kelowna War-riors history, (8-2-0-1) head coach Rylan Ferster hasn’t stopped thinking about the future and this week moved to solidify the Warriors goaltending position for years down the road.
And a player who at-tended the Pursuit of Excellence in Win eld the past two seasons has been tabbed as a poten-tial goalie of the future.
West Kelowna’s head coach/GM has added 16-year-old goalie Cody Porter to the Warriors roster, and dealt back-
up Tanner Burgardt to Weyburn of the Sas-katchewan Junior Hock-ey League.
Porter, a Vancou-ver native who spent the past two seasons with the Pursuit of Excel-lence in Lake Country, had begun the 2013-14 season with the Vancou-ver NW Giants of the BCMML.
“Cody’s a very good young goalie,” said Fer-ster. “I think he’s going to be an outstanding player in our league. In camp he was one of our best goal-ies, if not our best one.”
After failing to crack
the Warriors roster our of training camp, Porter went back to his home in the Lower Mainland to play in the BCMML. It wasn’t long however before Ferster decid-ed to bring the 6-foot-1, 180 pound ‘tender back into the Warriors fold as a back-up to 19-year-old starter Andy Desau-tels this year and likely a starter down the road.
“You never want to look too far ahead” Fer-ster cautioned. “But we feel that our goaltend-ing is covered, hopefully, for the next two to three years.”
For his part, Porter admits that he’s excited for the new opportunity in front of him.
“I’m really excited, it’s a big opportunity espe-cially as a 16-year-old to be able to play here. I’m really looking forward to it.
I’m happy but not satis ed. I want to play well up here and show that I can play.”
To make room for Porter, Ferster had to move Burgardt to the SJHL’s Weyburn Red Wings in exchange for future considerations.
 e 18-year old Sas-
katchewan native hadn’t yet faced any game action as a Warrior.
“We certainly wish him all the very best,” Ferster says of Burgardt. “Deals are never fun. Hopefully things work
out for him.” After losing the rst
two games the BCHL season, the Warriors ha-ven’t lost in regulation since, winning eight times and losing once in overtime to sit in
rst place overall in the BCHL. is weekend the Warriors are back at home, hosting Mer-ritt on Friday night and Prince George on Sat-urday night at Royal LePage Place.

e Halloween Haunt at Little Travelers’ Safe-ty Village has become a fun family tradition. It returns for its ninth year Oct. 26, from noon to 3 p.m.
Hosted by the Little Travelers’ Safety Village at 395 Hartman Rd. in Rutland, it is sponsored by Western Financial Group.
ere will be a variety of ghoulish games, activ-ities and crafts set up at stations around the safe-ty village and inside the classroom.
e popular pedal cars will also be on hand, and
prizes will be handed out at most of the stations.
“Halloween is one of the most exciting nights of the year for kids,”said Tania Meyer, execu-tive director of the Ke-lowna & District Safety Council.
“ e Halloween Haunt provides a safe alternative for families to celebrate Halloween together, and this event has become a family fa-vourite.
“We have sold out every year, and we usually have a lot of disappoint-ed parents calling for tickets just before the
event. “So, we’re encouraging
people to get their tickets as early as possible this year.”
e Little Travel-lers’ Safety village will be decorated especially for the occasion, and parents should bring their cam-eras. Like Halloween it-self, the event will go on rain or shine, so children should dress warmly under their costumes.
In keeping with the Halloween theme, Scott Alexander, a local natur-alist and environment-al educator, will be re-turning with several of
his slithering serpents. Children and adults will be able to touch and hold the reptiles as he teaches them about snake safety and handling.
A slice of pizza and juice will be available to all attendees, and ex-tra pizza slices can be pre-ordered prior to the event as well. All chil-dren will receive a Hal-loween treat bag lled with goodies and a Hal-loween safety tip sheet.
Tickets are $4 per person. Tickets are not available online, so to register, call KDSC at 250-765-3163.

WARREN HENDERSONSTAFF REPORTER
F rom the moment he awakes each morning at his
family’s home in West Kelowna, Rylan Sund-strom must follow a stringent routine.
e seven-year-old begins his day by prick-ing his nger to test his blood sugar level.
It’s an exercise he or his parents will repeat at least another six times over the next 24 hours.
Rylan also needs four to six insulin injections per day, usually self-ad-ministered on his ab-domen, but also occa-sionally on his arms or legs.
On top of it all, he must also follow a strict diet regimen, as his mom, Ti any, careful-ly measures calories and carbohydrates for each meal, including two sep-arate lunches for school.
Such is the life of a young type 1 diabet-ic whose day—and that of his family’s—revolves around the maintenance and treatment of a dis-ease which does not yet have a cure.
e Sundstroms have been living with Rylan’s condition for more than a year after he was diag-nosed with type 1 dia-betes (T1D) last Sep-
tember when the family was living in Chilliwack.
In the summer of 2012, Rylan began su ering from fatigue, weight loss, insatiable thirst and frequent urin-ation.
By the fall his parents, Wes and Ti any, had a hunch this was more ser-ious than a virus or case of the u.
“One morning he fainted at breakfast, not unconscious, but he just slouched over and that’s when we took him to emergency,” said Tif-
fany. “We were extreme-ly scared. at’s when they diagnosed him with type 1. e doctor ex-plained his pancreas had stopped producing insu-lin, that this was serious and life-threatening. We were shattered.”
Ti any admits she knew next to nothing about T1D prior to Ry-lan’s diagnosis.
One misconception she shared with many others was that the onset of the disease can be in-duced by a poor diet or unhealthy lifestyle. On
the contrary, T1D is non-preventable.
“Before this hap-pened to Rylan, I used to be judgemental and say, ‘What are people doing? Are they feeding sugar to their kids?’ I’m so sorry for that,” she said.
“Because when it hap-pens to you, you real-ize it’s out of your con-trol, there’s nothing you could have done as a par-ent. We’ve always eaten super healthy, well-bal-anced food. It was hard to accept.”
Still, with more than a year having passed since his diagnosis, the Sund-stroms—with the help of others—have learn-ed how to both live with and manage Rylan’s T1D.
Good time manage-ment, patience and care-ful planning have all been bene cial in treat-ing Rylan.
“We’re past feeling sorry for ourselves and have learned a new nor-mal,” Ti any explained.
“A lot of times we’re up in the middle of the night with him to mon-itor his blood sugar. I get called to the school,
sometimes twice a day. “Anytime we want to
go somewhere, we need to have a checklist and plan ahead. If you forget that one snack, it can be life-threatening. It’s just part of our lives now.”
While Wes, Ti any and Rylan’s sister, Aly, all take an active role in the day-to-day treatment of his condition, there are others the Sundstrom family count on for help.
e Sundstroms said the sta and students at Chief Tomat Elemen-tary, where Rylan attends Grade 2, have been in-valuable partners in car-ing for their son.
“Our school has been fabulous” she added.
“We’re basically put-ting his life in their hands…he needs to be checked regularly.
“Keeping a normal kid safe is hard enough, but this is a whole other story. ey’ve just been wonderful.”
Unlike most kids his age, Rylan needs con-tinuous supervision at events like eld trips or birthday parties.

Should I stay and renovate or should I look for a different home?
Here’s one gauge to use when deciding whether to remodel/renovate or upgrade to a different home: expect moving to cost about 10% of your home’s current value. If your
remodelling project can be done for less than that, you may want to stay and do it! If you stay in your current home, plan with an eye on the potential resale value.
Kitchens, bathrooms, siding, and windows are great investments. In addition to making your home more liveable, remodelling will make your home more valuable. According to the Appraisal Institute of Canada, your remodel investment dollars pay back at different rates when you sell your home, depending on the type of project you choose.
If you choose not to stay in your current home, both historically low mortgage rates and a local market that offers a wide range of home choices, can make upgrading to a more valuable home a very pro table investment in your future.
For information on expected returns for your remodelling projects or real estate opportunities, simply call me at 250-826-5660 or e-mail me at [email protected] and I would be more than happy to share that valuable information with you. Enjoy the sunshine!

What are your tips to help students return to school with a healthy smile? Part 3 of 3...
For after school sports, limit the amount of Gatorade children drink because it is loaded with sugar. During sports
remember to have them use their mouth guard! (Custom- t ones are best! These can be made of different thicknesses for best comfort and for most effective protection with different sports.) Parents should encourage safety and the use of mouth guards to protect the teeth from injury during sports. Ask your dentist about getting a custom- t guard for your child. Parents should remember that improving their child’s oral health can also improve their self esteem and overall performance. Parents can provide a good example by making appointments for themselves too. In fact, our own three young kids will not go to bed if we’ve forgotten to help them oss and they are always reminding me to make their appointments for them! LOL!!

I replace my contacts once a month, but my friend puts in a new pair every day – what does she know that I don’t?
The number one bene t of daily disposable lenses is convenience. Insert the lens in the morning,
remove and discard at the end of the day. No solutions required. Comfort is the second bene t. Since you are only wearing them once, you are less likely to experience dryness or allergy problems related to deposits or cleaning solutions. Daily disposables can be worn every day or only occasionally. Some patients wear them only when they are travelling, camping, or swimming, when contacts are at a higher risk of being contaminated, and a suitable environment is not available to clean them. They are available in a wide range of prescriptions. Ask about a free trial pair at your next appointment.

I am headed across the border into the US this winter with my dog. What do I need to think about before I go?
In the winter months in the Okanagan, a growing number of people visit warmer parts of the US for a short visit, or stay for a number of months. No matter where you
go, you should always consider the potential health concerns for both you and your pets. To even cross the border into the United States, your dog or cat must have a current rabies vaccine. You may be asked to present a rabies vaccine certi cate to prove that a vaccine has been given within the last 3 years. For travel to Mexico, an annual rabies vaccine is required.
Wherever you are travelling, it is also important to be aware of local infectious diseases that our pets do not usually encounter here. These include but are not limited to heartworm disease, leptospirosis, coccidiomycosis (Valley Fever), blastomycosis, lyme’s disease, and other tick borne diseases. Before you travel, be sure to ask your veterinarian about what potential health risks should be considered. It may also be wise to contact a veterinary clinic at your destination to ask what health preventative measures they recommend in their area. It is also important to let your regular veterinarian know during health exams what recent travel history your pet has. This information can be very valuable in the event your animal falls ill upon return.

A visiting nurse re-searcher is promoting an integrated approach to patient care,
Care practices in the U.K. focus on collabor-ation among health care disciplines.
Kate Gerrish, a pro-fessor of nursing re-search, knows about teamwork. When it comes to developing col-laborative approach-es to patient care among health care practitioners, she has in uenced the development of national policy in the U.K.
Recently, Gerrish is a visiting scholar with UBC Okanagan’s School of Nursing. She lectured on campus to nursing students and faculty and shared ndings from her research with Interior Health practitioners and managers.
“It’s about bridging the gap between what we know and what we do,” said Gerrish.
“I am very keen on how we span those boundaries and bridge
the gap between what is taught in the classroom and what is practiced in the health service.”
Gerrish’s work is based on a practice mod-el that sees researchers collaborate and work in partnership with deci-sion makers, such as care managers, policy mak-ers and health care prac-titioners.
“ is innovative ap-proach to education and shared learning between students and sta sup-ports our goal of provid-ing high quality health care services,” said Hea-ther Cook, chief nurs-ing o cer with Interior Health.
Gerrish holds a joint appointment between the University of Shef- eld and the She eld Teaching Hospitals Na-tional Health Servi-ces Foundation Trust in Britain, leading and de-veloping research to aca-demic nursing sta and heading strategic de-velopment of research and practice for nurses.
She is current-ly working on a 20-mil-lion pound ($33 million Cdn) program of applied research in self-manage-
ment of long-term con-ditions and a 2-million pound ($3 million Cdn) program that trials in-novative strategies for knowledge translation.
“I am particularly ex-cited about the oppor-tunities to share some of the work we’ve been do-ing in the health service with colleagues here in Interior Health and in turn learn from their ex-periences,” said Gerrish.
“ e next generation
of nurses needs to have the knowledge to imple-ment practices that re-sult in better patient out-comes.”
Patricia Marck, dir-ector of UBC’s School of Nursing, said making changes in health care delivery presents num-erous challenges due to economic, political and other considerations that impact health care.
“ e best way to drive change is to do it at the bedside with those pro-viding care being sup-ported by the right poli-cies,” said Marck.
Marck expects Ger-
rish’s research ndings to bene t teams of prac-titioners and managers in building Interprofes-sional Clinical Learning Units in the Okanagan on an elder-friend-ly unit at Kelowna Gen-eral Hospital and at the maternal child unit at Vernon Jubilee Hospital.
“ e whole idea of these units is to cre-ate a place where stu-dents, faculty, sta , and physicians all come to work and learn every day about how to pro-vide better care and the learning environment is there for everybody,” said Marck.
“UBC has a very close collaborative working re-lationship with Interior Health,” said Marck.
“With new chief nursing o cer Hea-ther Cook we have a lot of shared aspirations to build close links between the academy and the practice settings.”
Interior Health ex-pects to bene t from the enhanced learning part-
nership with UBC.“ e development of
clinical learning units, each focused on a di er-ent population, will be an exciting learning oppor-tunity for sta at Kelow-na General and Vernon Jubilee, and will provide us with quality strategies to apply more broadly across Interior Health in the future,” said Cook.
Collaboration initia-
tives will help build cap-acity for coaching on the front lines of health care, said Marck.
Students and practi-tioners bene t from be-ing part of the process, she said.
“It is important for students and practition-ers to be part of driving practice improvements, not simply hearing about them.”v

In the next few years we could nd that the mortgage brok-
er channel proves es-sential to maintaining a healthy mortgage market balance.
Heightened compe-tition generally leads to better mortgage prod-ucts, more choice and lower prices.
Interestingly, compe-tition doesn’t always lead to the lowest rate or best deal in the mortgage and
banking markets. Getting the lowest-
cost mortgage also takes research. When a con-sumer chooses to work with a mortgage broker they are outsourcing this research (i.e., compari-son shopping) to a quali- ed expert.
e broker then uses his or her knowledge of the market, access to multiple lenders and evaluation of the client’s unique needs to identify
suitable options. On average, brokers
deal with approximate-ly six lenders for each client.
ese lenders all vie for the client’s business and, in turn, recent stud-ies have found consum-ers who use mortgage brokers save an aver-age of 19 basis points on their interest rate. at equates to the di erence between a rate of 3.49 per cent and a rate of
3.68 per cent. It’s surprising then
that CMHC’s latest mortgage consumer sur-vey found that a whop-ping 73 per cent of mortgage consumers still choose to not use a brok-er. In large part this may be due to a lack of aware-ness about what brokers really do.
In 2005, a report was released titled Structure Of e Canadian Hous-ing Market and Finance
System. In it, Virginie Traclet, assistant chief of the Bank of Canada, wrote, “As competition in the housing nance market became more in-tense…Canadian con-sumers bene ted from increasing choice in terms of rate and term options and payment features for their mort-gage loans.” She named virtual banks and mort-gage brokers as the mar-ket’s new competitors.
Evidence shows that a strong broker market keeps lenders competi-tive and is in the best in-terest of consumers.
A case in point is a re-port from the Bank of Canada that found bor-rowers are more likely to use a broker when there
are many lenders. When there are many lenders the bene ts of working with a broker are poten-tially higher since they have access to more op-tions.
Additional evidence
comes from a separate Bank of Canada’s nding that banks do not treat all customers the same.
Banks, for example, o er larger discounts to new customers than ex-isting customers. ey do so to maximize pro ts when faced with reduced competition.
Canada has long been considered a country that puts the wellbeing of the collective ahead of the individual.
Out of all the rea-sons to support and work with a mortgage broker perhaps the most com-pelling is that consumers are better o when the broker channel is strong.
History has shown that a formidable broker channel promotes lend-er transparency. is re-sults in more aggressive pricing for all consum-ers and not just the best negotiators. Today, brok-er share hovers near 30 per cent.
One could imagine the savings to consumers if that number was closer to 50 per cent. e best ve-year rate is currently 3.49 per cent.

at’s why either Wes or Ti any accompany Rylan to each and every one of his outings.
“A good example is when one of his friends invited him to a birthday party, and when other parents are dropping their seven-year-olds o , I have to stay there with Rylan,” said Wes Sund-strom.
“At parties, often all the kids are running around, and he has to be monitored closely when he’s physically active like that. So many things can a ect his blood sugar, you have to be there.”
As Rylan grows older, Wes and Ti any Sund-strom say he will grad-
ually gain more in-dependence and will be able to live a relative-ly normal life, given his condition.
One person in Kelow-na with T1D who can attest to a sustainable and happy existence is Doug Loepp.
Now 43, he was diag-nosed with the disease 25 years ago. While his daily routine revolves around blood sugar tests, insulin injections and painstaking diet plan-ning, he continues to function normally at work and life in general.
“I try to control it the best I can,” Loepp said. “Everyday is a little dif-ferent, you’re eating dif-ferent things, if you exer-cise or go for a hike, you
have to adjust for that. “It’s a challenge some-
times, you always have to be aware of it, but it’s do-able. Everybody is di er-ent, but I’ve had it now for 25 years and haven’t had any serious compli-cations.”
What Leopp, the Sundstroms and some 300,000 other Can-adians ultimately hope to see is a cure for type 1 diabetes.
e JDRF (former-ly Juvenile Diabetes Re-search Foundation) will soon be announcing hu-man clinical trials in a cure therapy.
It’s the beginning of moving research out of the lab, where diabetes has already been cured in mice over 130 times.
“ ere are amazing things happening in dia-betes research right now and with research fund-ing, we can move testing from the lab into human clinical trials,” said Pam Prentice, manager of fundraising and develop-ment for JDRF.
“Our other focus is on prevention and treat-ment, to keep people as healthy as we can, so that when a cure is discov-ered, those with type 1 diabetes will be able to take full advantage of it.”
For Rylan Sund-strom and hundreds of other type 1 diabetics in the valley, research is the key to making the next breakthrough discov-ery that will potentially change their lives.
Forgetting one snack can be life-threateningT1D FROM A8
The Okanagan chap-ter of JDRF hosts its Starlight Gala fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Coast Capri Hotel in Kelowna.
The evening will feature
a 1920s theme to celebrate the discovery of insulin by Dr. Frederick Banting and Dr. Charles Best in 1921.
Since its inception, the annual Okanagan fundrais-
er has generated more than $1 million for diabetes re-search.
Tickets for the Starlight Gala are available by calling 250-765-7711.

Advance tickets for the highly anticipated release of e Hunger Games: Catching Fire, went on sale this month, at select Cineplex En-tertainment theatres and online at www.cineplex.
com. Special 8 p.m. advance
screenings of e Hun-ger Games: Catching Fire will be presented on ursday, Nov. 21, at se-lect Cineplex theatres, including UltraAVX™
and IMAX® auditor-iums, where available.
e Hunger Games: Catching Fire carries on from previous Hunger Games movies.
Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe-
ly after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games, along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark.
Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, em-
barking on a Victor’s Tour of the districts.
Along the way, Kat-niss senses that a rebel-lion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as Presi-dent Snow prepares
the 75th Annual Hun-ger Games ( e Quar-ter Quell)—a competi-tion that could change Panem forever.
Private screenings and group rates for the lm are also available.
For more information, call 1‐800‐313‐4461 or email [email protected].
e Hunger Games: Catching Fire opens in wide release on Friday, Nov. 22.

You are invited to a Directions Forum. . .
October 22nd 5:30 – 8:00 pm at the Municipal Hall The Forum is open to all members of the public.
There will be a mix of presentations and interactive discussions and activities including: the results of a land supply analysis, a comparison of two different growth scenarios (based on community
members’ work at the design charrette in June) request for your feedback on the plan’s vision and goals, and on specific
actions that could support the strategies.
This event is the time to bring your creative suggestions for actions that make the most of Lake Country’s tremendous community spirit.
We are also pleased to announce that Lake Country's “State of Sustainability Report” will be released prior to the October 22nd event. The report assesses Lake Country's performance with respect to the goals that
were established at the charrette, and identifies areas of strength and areas for improvement. Please keep an eye out for the press release about the report in the week before the Forum. oursustainablelakecountry.ca
This fall, you can easily clear out some prime mosquito breeding habitat around your home! And you can do it for free.
The Regional District of Central Okanagan and its Mosquito Control Program contractor BWP Consulting are providing four free, passenger tire drop-off opportunities in Kelowna and Lake Country. Any old passenger vehicle tires or transport tractor-trailer tires (no agricultural tires), with or without rims, can be dropped off locally for recycling Sunday, October 20th 10:00am to 3:00pm.
Sunday, October 20th George Elliot Secondary School
10241 Bottom Wood Lake Road, Lake Country By safely recycling unwanted tires you’ll remove opportunities for mosquitoes to reproduce around your home. That helps protect you, your family and neighbours from the nuisance insects and reduces the potential risk of spreading West Nile Virus.
