About Kurzweil 3000 Mobile
Kurzweil 3000 Mobile is the mobile extension of the leading computer program
Kurzweil 3000. Make sure to have a Kurzweil 3000 PC or Mac license version 14
in order to use Kurzweil 3000 Mobile.
Kurzweil 3000 Mobile is an app for reading and editing Kurzweil 3000
documents (KES format) on your iDevice (iPad, iPhone and iPod touch).
Quite some of the capabilities of the Kurzweil 3000 computer program can also
be found in Kurzweil 3000 Mobile.
The high-quality voices provided in iOS are used in different languages during
reading aloud. The “dual highlighting” ensures that you can follow the words as
they are being read aloud.
In addition to reading, you can also add notes. To do so, you can use the
integrated word prediction. In addition to the default word predictions, you are
presented with suggestions meant for people with dyslexia. Typical writing
mistakes are taken into account. You can also have the note read aloud.
If the meaning of a word in the text is unclear, you can search for it in a
dictionary. Additional information is displayed in three separate tabs:
"Sample" tab: A picture and an example sentence appear;
"Verb" tab: The conjugation is shown when a verb is involved;
"Dictionary" tab: The dictionary explanation for this word from the dictionaries installed on your device, appears instantly. You can also have it read aloud with dual highlighting.
Kurzweil 3000 Mobile sorts your files on two tabs: One for your local documents
and one for your Dropbox documents. You can use the same documents on
both Kurzweil 3000 Mobile and Kurzweil 3000 on a PC or laptop using Dropbox.
In short, Kurzweil 3000 Mobile is very straightforward to use and offers support
when reading, making notes and understanding text.

Preparing Your iDevice for Using Kurzweil 3000
Mobile: Installing Reading Voices
Kurzweil 3000 Mobile uses the voices provided by iOS (the operating system of
your iDevice). These voices are available in two qualities: default quality and
enhanced quality. When using Kurzweil 3000, we recommend using the
enhanced quality voices. The choice between default and enhanced quality can
only be made from the Settings menu of your iDevice. To do so, proceed as
follows:
1. Go to Settings – General – Accessibility – Speech - Speak Selection – Voices.
2. Select the language whose voice quality you wish to specify.
Select the language variant if required. For English, you can choose between five options: English (U.S.), English (Australia), English (U.K.), English (Ireland) and English (South Africa).
3. Set the radio button to "Enhanced Quality".
Installing Kurzweil 3000 Mobile on Your iDevice
The Kurzweil 3000 Mobile app can be downloaded and installed from the
AppStore. You can do this by using the App Store app on your iDevice or iTunes
on your PC.
Starting the App
Request trial license
If you don’t have a username and password yet, you can request a trial license.
This will allow you to use the application 30 days for free. Click on “Request trial
license” and enter the following entries: “Name”, “First Name”, “Email address”,
“Language” and “Country”. If you select “Supervisor”, you will also have to enter
your function and organisation. If you press on “Request trial license”, then an
email with an activation link is sent to the email address. Clicking on the link will
activate your account. Once activated you can log in by clicking on the trial link
at the bottom of the screen. You will be able to use all the features of K3000
Mobile for 30 days.
Logging in as User
The first step after starting the app is to log in as user (or you can try the trial
version first, see above). You must enter a valid username and password on the
logon screen. Kurzweil 3000 Mobile remembers your login data so that you will
not have to re-enter them again next time.

Summary
The Kurzweil 3000 Mobile start screen provides a summary of your local KES
documents (documents in the Kurzweil 3000 proprietary format) in the Local
Files tab. You can also access your KES documents on your Dropbox account by
using the Dropbox tab. First make sure you have KES documents (locally or on
Dropbox) before you can view them using Kurzweil 3000 Mobile.
Main Bar
The main bar has the "Log out" button as well as the "Files" label and a button
furthest to the right to go to Settings. Further details of this can be found in later
sections in this manual.
Search Bar
The search bar is located under the main bar. It may not be visible at first. Swipe
down to display the search bar. Next, tap the bar and enter the text that you
want to find. A summary of the documents in which the requested text appears
in the file name is shown. This search bar can be found in each of the tabs "Local
Files" and "Dropbox".
"Local Files" Tab
You can choose between two tabs in the bottom bar of the start screen: "Local
Files" and "Dropbox". Click the first tab to view your local KES files. These KES
files are:
the files you transferred using iTunes;
the ones you exported from another application (for example, Dropbox or Google Drive);
the files you downloaded on to your iDevice (for example, via a website).
You can delete a specific KES document by making a swipe gesture from right to
left and selecting "Delete".
You cannot create folders or subfolders from the "Local Files" tab.
Transferring KES Files Using iTunes
You can transfer KES document from your PC to your iDevice using the free
iTunes program. Start iTunes from your PC and connect your iDevice with the PC
via the USB cable. In iTunes click the "iPad", "iPhone" or "iPod" button at the top
on the right.
Next, select the "Apps" tab.
Select "Kurzweil 3000" on the list with Apps. All documents saved locally on your
iDevice appear in the "Documents" field. The first time, this field will be empty.
Drag KES documents to this field to store them locally on your iDevice.
You can view these local documents on your iDevice by tapping the "Local Files"
tab. The KES documents you have just added will be shown here.
Transferring KES Files from Another Application
Google Drive
If you have received KES files in your Google Drive, you can transfer them to
Kurzweil 3000 Mobile using the Google Drive app running on your iDevice. Click
the "i" button next to the document that you want to transfer. A sidebar
appears on the right and tap "Open with…". Select "Open with Kurzweil 3000".
The file appears in the "Local Files" tab.
Alternatively, click the file to open it using Google Drive. You will receive a
notification that this type of file is not supported by Google Drive. You will be
given the option to open it in another application using the "Open with…"
button. Select "Open with Kurzweil 3000". The file appears in the "Local Files"
tab.
Dropbox
You can also transfer KES files from Dropbox – using the Dropbox app installed
on your iDevice – to the local folder of Kurzweil 3000 Mobile on your iDevice.
You can do this by navigating to the required KES document in the Dropbox app
on your iDevice. You will see that no sample is available because Dropbox is
unable to display this type of file. You do, however, have the option of opening
the file in another application using the button at the top on the right. The file
appears in the "Local Files" tab.
"Dropbox" Tab
In addition, Kurzweil 3000 Mobile gives you direct access to the documents in
your Dropbox account. To do so, use the "Dropbox" tab.
If the Dropbox app is installed on your iDevice, the first time you start Kurzweil
3000 Mobile you will be prompted whether Kurzweil 3000 Mobile can use the
same Dropbox account. If you agree, you are given access to your Dropbox
account using the "Dropbox" tab without having to do anything else. If you
disagree, you have to specify your Dropbox account details (username and
password) when you go to the "Dropbox" tab. As a rule, Kurzweil 3000 Mobile
lets you use another Dropbox account than the account with which the Dropbox
app runs on your iDevice.
By default, the documents of your Dropbox account are not saved locally on
your iDevice. This means that you can only open the Dropbox files when your
iDevice is online. Once the app is launched, you can continue to work even if
your iDevice is no longer online. When it is back online, the file concerned will
be synchronised to Dropbox.
In addition, the Dropbox tab lets you mark documents from your Dropbox
account as favourite. Swipe to the right on the name of the document in the list
and tap the asterisk.
The document is a Favourites document as from this moment. Favourites
documents are marked by an asterisk shown in the icon to the left of the
filename.
In all cases, a local copy is created of any Favourites document. This means that
you can also open it even when your iDevice is not online. This copy will also be
synchronised to Dropbox.
The Dropbox app on your iDevice, too, is familiar with the concept of Favourites.
Marking a file as favourite in the Dropbox app does not mean, however, that the
file is marked as favourite in Kurzweil 3000 Mobile and vice versa. The apps run
autonomously such that the configuration of one app will have no effect on the
settings of another app.
The Dropbox tab just lets you open documents or mark documents as favourite.
Operations such as deleting documents and creating new folders are not
possible. Instead, use the Dropbox app on your iDevice.
Reading Window
Opening Documents
In the document summary, tap the document you want to open. The document
opens in the reading window.

Main Bar
You will find the following buttons in the main bar:
"Files" button: To return to the document summary.
"Open With" button: To open the document in other applications.
"Settings" button: To display and change the settings.
Toolbar
iPad:
The toolbar has the following buttons:
"Reading Language" button: To select the language in which the document must be read aloud. In Settings, you can select the languages that you want to appear in the list. If you select "Automatic", Kurzweil 3000 Mobile sets the reading language automatically. If the document contains language tags, they are read aloud in the language of the tags even when the rest of the document is read aloud in a different language.
"Speech Settings" button: To set the reading mode (Self-paced or Continuous), the reading unit (Word, Line, Sentence or Highlight) and the reading speed (50% - 200%).
"Previous Reading Unit" button: To return to the previous reading unit.
"Read" button: To start the reading aloud from where the reading cursor is or to pause. You can also just tap anywhere in the text if you want the system to start reading aloud from there.
"Next Reading Unit" button: To go to the next reading unit.
Only for iPhone and iPod – "Add Note" button: to create text notes, sticky notes and voice notes. Pressing this button will show you a list of three types of notes.
"Text Note" button. Press this button if you want to create a text note. This will change the background colour of the button to indicate that this button is active. If you then tap somewhere in the text, a text note will be created at that location. Adding a text or a sticky note to your text brings up the virtual keyboard at the bottom. Next, enter your text. The word predictor shows up at the top of the keyboard. More information on how to use the word prediction is included in the next sections.
"Sticky Note" button. Press this button if you want to create a sticky note. This will change the background colour of the button to indicate that this button is active. If you then tap somewhere in the text, a sticky note will be created at that location. Adding a text or a sticky note to your text brings up the virtual keyboard at the bottom. Next, enter your text. The word predictor shows up at the top of the keyboard. More information on how to use the word prediction is included in the next sections.
"Voice Note" button. Voice notes are linked to words. Tap a word first, and then press this button if you want to create a voice note. This brings up the Record window. Tap the microphone to start recording. You can stop the recording by tapping the Stop button. Tap anywhere in the document to remove the Record window from the screen. The voice note is added to the selected word.
Tap it to bring up the options.
The first option lets you listen or edit the note. The second option allows you to delete the note.
Navigation Bar
To show the Navigation bar, tap the red brick at the bottom on the left.
The "Thumbnail view" button provides a useful summary of all pages of your document.
When you wish to move quickly to a specific page, tap the required thumbnail in the centre of the Navigation bar. If the document has many pages, navigate by swiping to the left or right until you have reached the required page number.
The "Display Reading Order" button displays the reading order of all areas on that page.
Text Editing
Zooming
You can zoom in and out easily on a page by moving two fingers farther apart or
closer together in het middle of a page (pinching).
Navigating
Simply navigate through the pages by moving your finger left or right on a page
(swiping).
"Read" button: To have the note read aloud.
"Edit" button: To edit the note text.
"Delete" button: To delete the note.
Selecting Text
Text Selection
Tap a word. This word can be selected as follows:
You can extend the selection by dragging the blue handles. The options (see
below) associated with this selection appear after expanding the selection:
Frame Selection
Doubletap the word to start block selection. The options (see below) are listed
immediately:
You can drag a frame around the words you want to select. You can do this by
dragging the selection handles.
Read selection: To have the selection read aloud.
Find Word: To find a word. The word and its meaning will appear in a frame in the following tabs:
"Sample" tab: A picture and an example sentence appear;
"Verb" tab: The conjugation is shown when a verb is involved; To have a conjugation read aloud, simply tap the conjugation.
"Dictionary" tab: The dictionary explanation for this word from the dictionaries installed on your device, appears instantly. You can also have it read aloud with dual highlighting.
Highlighting: Tap the highlighter to select the highlight colour. You can remove the highlight by clicking the red cross.
Creating a voice note: Tapping this icon brings up the Record window. Tap the microphone to start recording. You can stop
the recording by tapping the Stop button. Tap anywhere in the document to remove the Record window from the screen. The voice note is added to the selected word.
Tap it to bring up the options.
The first option lets you listen or edit the note. The second option allows you to delete the note.
Putting text into the clipboard: Tap this icon to put the selected text into the clipboard. The text in the clipboard can be pasted in other apps.
Using the "Dictionary" tab
This tab only appears when the option “Use the dictionaries from the device” is
selected in the settings on the tab “General” (this option is selected by default).
Per dictionary a short explanation is displayed. Tap on the short explanation to
see the full explanation. If only one explanation is found, you will see the full
display immediately.

You can read the full explanation with dual highlighting by pressing the play
button.
You can manage the number of dictionaries by clicking on ‘Manage’. Here you
can add and remove additional dictionaries. There are dictionaries available for
several languages, including English, Dutch, French and German.
If no explanation is available in the dictionaries you can click on the link ‘Search
Web’ to search the word on the web.
Using Word Prediction
The word prediction becomes active wherever you enter text. This is indicated
by the word bar that appears just above the on-screen keyboard or below the
text when using an external keyboard.
The word prediction takes into account typical mistakes made by someone with
writing problems. The words in blue are the default word predictions starting
with the letters you have entered. The words in orange are the suggested
corrections with the word start corrected.
To add one of the words showing up in the prediction bar to your text, tap the
word.
If you want more information about a word or if you want to hear the word, tap-
and-hold (longtap) the word. The word is spoken and you are presented with
the box showing the dictionary, picture dictionary and the conjugations. If you
want more information on another word in the prediction bar, all you need to
do is tap that word. To close the box, just tap outside it.
Settings
In the main bar at the top of the screen you will find the Settings button:
Tapping this button gives you a three-tab screen.
"General" Tab
The account information of your Kurzweil 3000 Mobile web license;
The link to your Dropbox account;
The font used in the user interface;
The ability to consult dictionaries from the device.
"Speech Settings" Tab
This tab allows you to tick the languages for which you want a voice available in
Kurzweil 3000 Mobile. These will also be the languages that you will see when
you tap the "Reading Language" button on the toolbar of the Reading window. If
language variants are available, they will have an icon with an "i" on the right.
Tapping it brings up the next screen. This screen lets you specify which variant
you want to use. For example, for English, you can choose between five options:
English (United Kingdom), English (South Africa), English (Australia), English
(United States) and English (Ireland).
