oFFeNseThe Jayhawks passing game has been an issue all year. Even with a solid run
game, Kansas inability to throw has robbed itsel o valuable points. We saw last
week against Baylor that playing high-scoring teams on the road would be the
ultimate challenge or the Jayhawks. It does have to take an Andrew Luck-type
perormance, but neither Kansas starting quarterback has completed more than
50 percent o its passes since losing to Kansas State.

deFeNseThe Jayhawks deense didnt do their oense any avors last week. Kansas gave up
21 unanswered points in the second hal ater a close battle in the frst 30 minutes.
Part o the problem was the Bears passing game backing up the Kansas deenders
and allowing Baylor to run. The good news: While Texas Tech boasts the ourth-best
passing game in the country, it has the worst run oense in the Big 12.
momeNTumTexas Tech presents many o the same oensive problems as
Baylor did a week ago. Quarterback Seth Doege has passed or more
touchdowns (19) than anyone else in the Big 12, while throwing just
seven interceptions. But the Red Raiders oense is somewhat one-
dimensional. Texas Tech averages only 3.5 yards per rush, so the key
to this game will be slowing down Techs passing game.
aT a GLaNce
This part o the season will
get very tough or running
backs coach Reggie Mitchell.
Kansas biggest weapon is its
stable o runners, but teams
are starting to catch on. Ater
rushing or nearly 100 yards
in the frst hal against Baylor
last week, James Sims fnished
with just 126 yards. Keeping
the run eective will be crucial
or the Jayhawks in their last
three games.
coachING PLayer To WaTch
Ron Doherty returned to orm last Sat-
urday with six punts averaging 44.3 yards
per kick. Fixing the pestering special teams
problems has been a huge concern or Kan-
sas coach Charlie Weis lately. Ater calling
or all hands on deck it seems hes ound
some more stability with the unit. Still, feld
goals have got to become a more viable op-
tion or the low-scoring Jayhawks.

Can James Sims keep up his streak o 100-yard rushing games?
The Jayhawks certainly need his production. Will Texas Tech tempt
Weis to opt or more passes? Since becoming the Jayhawks starter,
Michael Cummings has only completed 22 o 49 pass attempts.
And will the Jayhawks score more than 20 points? They havent
been able to do so since putting up 23 on Northern Illinois in week
our.
Kansas can perorm on the road
like it does at home. The Jayhawks
have been able to limit high-scor-
ing oenses to 21 points or less
in Lawrence, but not on the road.
Staying competitive until the end
is the next challenge or Kansas.

Its hard to have any momentum ater giving up 21
unanswered points in the second hal o a blowout to
Baylor. Michael Cummings passes looked much better,
but his receivers had trouble making plays. Putting to-
gether a ull game will be the next step to boost Kansas
spirit.

With three games let in the

Big 12 in rushing. He is less than

oFFeNseTexas Techs oense is red hot and one o the best in the Big 12. Texas Tech leads the
conerence or most passing touchdowns. Led by quarterback Seth Doege and a strong
oensive line, the Red Raiders oense is mostly passing oriented. Doeges thrown 31
touchdowns and eight interceptions on the year and hopes to improve his numbers against
Kansas. Running backs Kenny Williams and Eric Stephens Jr. have not been involved in
game plans very much. Expect the Red Raiders to go pass heavy on the Jayhawks.

deFeNseTommy Tuberville has coached a good deense, coordinated by Art Kauman.
The deense is ranked 18th in the country and third in the Big 12. Texas Techs
pass deense is second in the conerence, thanks to saety Cody Davis, who
won Big 12 Deensive Player o the Week in Week 7. The deense runs a 4-3
style and sometimes shits into a nickel package with Tre Porter as the extra
deensive back.
momeNTum
Texas Tech opened the season ninth in the Big 12 polls with ew
expectations. Although the Red Raiders are 3-3 in the conerence,
they have some standout players whove had their names eatured in
the spotlight. An unbalanced oense and inconsistency on deense
has kept them away rom being ranked higher, but theyve won more
games than many had expected, and in doing so have already ex-
ceeded expectations or 2012.
aT a GLaNce
Like any coach, Tommy Tubervilletook the necessary routes to land
head coaching gigs with multiple
schools throughout his coaching
career. He spent our years as the
deensive line and linebackers coach
at Arkansas State. He made a name
or himsel at Miami as an eight-year
assistant and as the deensive coor-
dinator or Texas A&M or one season.
Tuberville was the head coach at Ole
Miss or our years and at Auburn or
10 years. Since 2010, Tuberville as
been with Texas Tech and has led it
to a 19-15 record so ar.
coachING
Wide receiver Eric Ward canmake the biggest dierence in
this game or the Red Raiders.
Ward isnt in the top 50 in the
nation in either receptions or
receiving yards. But that hasnt
stopped Seth Doege rom nd-
ing him in the end zone. Ward
is tied th in the nation or
most touchdown catches with
10. Ward has been a red-zone
threat or opposing deensive backs. What makes this more
interesting is the act that Kansas is rst in the Big 12 in
red-zone deense. Keep an eye on Ward when Texas Tech
has the ball inside the 20.
PLayer To WaTch
Kicker Ryan Bustin has made 12 o 17 eld goals this year,
with misses rom various distances. Texas Tech will want
Bustin to come through i its stopped in the red zone. Kick
returner SaDale Foster and punt returner Austin Zouzalik
havent made much noise on special teams but have a
chance to change that against Kansas. The Jayhawks
have allowed some big returns this season, most notably
against Oklahoma.
sPecIaL Teams
?
quesTIoN marKs
?
Can Texas Tech limit its turnovers?Although Texas Tech has played well this season, its 3-3 conerence record is due
to the 10 turnovers the team has committed this year. I Kansas creates a couple
o turnovers on the road and ollow up with scores, Texas Tech could nd itsel in
jeopardy o losing its top 25 spot in the rankings.
Will the Red Raiders draw a lot of penalties?
The Red Raiders, as good as they are, have been guilty o 44 penalties, which
counts or the most in the conerence. Texas Tech must be mentally prepared and
more ocused this week to prevent rom having yellow fags thrown its direction.
Kansas cant compete in thesecond hal on the road. Its a
trend with the Jayhawks. Their
road perormance in conerence
games havent gone well in the
second hal. Charlie Weis has told
his players that they need to play
our ull quarters o good ootball
i they want any shot at winning,
especially on the road in dicult
Big 12 environments.

Texas Tech has lost to Kansas just once in the two
teams history. The Red Raiders have deeated the Jay-
hawks in the previous ve meetings. This year, the Red
Raiders have played well and have six wins, three within
the conerence, under their belt. They have the upper hand
going into this game against the Jayhawks, but Tuberville
wont take any game lightly.
