Dear Fellow Brother Knights, Another year of grace has begun! In the year of the Lord 2012. Time is moving on, another opportunity God is giving us to grow
closer to Him. Looking forward is a Christian attitude because it implies a positive outlook, a hopeful outlook. There are so many goals to achieve, so many projects to complete, perhaps even the proverbial resolutions to work on, and it’s all geared toward improvement. Yet, there are challenges that lie ahead too, and it is precisely here that we can rely on the grace of God and the help of our dear Brother Knights. My wife, Priscilla and I wish you a Peaceful and Joyous New Year and may it brings abundant blessings to each and everyone of you. A grace-filled New Year to all !!

DECEMBER 2011
JOHN and LYNNE HEATHE
A member of our Council 6855 since 1991, Bro. John Heathe has demonstrated strongly his time in the
Order as evident in his participation in the church and community programs.
Together with his wife, Lynne, they participated in the establishment of the St. Paul’s Adoration Chapel
in 1997, at the request of Rev. Fr. Peter Chiang. Since that time, this couple are very much involved in
the daily operation of the Chapel which runs on 24/7.
A Pro-Life supporter which was apparent during the “40 Days for Life” with the HEATHE Family
children and grandchildren participating. Their son, Bro. Scott Heathe, is our Council 6855 Webmaster.
Bro. John Heathe, without hesitation, volunteered to be in the Bingo Take-Down Taskforce, when
Monsignor Luterbach requested the Knights of Columbus to step up and assist in the TakeDown.
A role model to the Order, to quote Bro.John “ I do all these good wills for the Lord”.
Congratulations and Thank you HEATHE FAMILY……God Bless !!!
DECEMBER 2011
PAUL LAU
Bro. Paul Lau joined the Knights of Columbus in November 17, 2004. Since he joined the Order, He
has actively participated in the church, community and council activities. He ushers regularly at the
9:00am Sunday Mass and has been consistently helping in the Parish Community Pancake Breakfast.
As a Professional Chef, he plays an important role in the preparation and cooking of eggs, sausages
and french toast. On the Christmas Pancake Breakfast, he ensured that sausages are cooked to its
high standard.
His expertise in food safe handling was imparted to the members of the Knights of Columbus
Pancake Breakfast Team when he sponsored a Food Safe Level 1 Course this month not only to its
members, but to the parishioners, as well.
Congratulations BROTHER PAUL and thank you for your enormous support !!!

Our Guarantees Set Us Apart
Knights of Columbus life insurance offers something precious few other financial products can –
guarantees. As long as you pay your premiums, the policy proceeds will be there for your
beneficiaries should something happen to you. We call that peace of mind, and that’s what we offer
with our Shield for Life.
• We guarantee the cash value in your whole life policies will be there.
• We guarantee the rates on your term insurance.
• We guarantee our retirement products will provide a stream of income when you need it.
On top of those product guarantees, I guarantee that I will offer professional, high-quality service
that you would expect from our organization.
“There is no more highly rated insurer in North America than the Knights of Columbus”, as the
accolade goes. I would suggest that a principal reason that we have attained such esteemed
recognition is because we remain steadfastly committed to the vision of Father Michael J. McGivney
by providing life insurance by brother Knights for brother Knights.
That commitment is an essential core value of the Knights of Columbus, and our core values
permeate all levels of our organization. These principles for marketing are summed up by our
Golden Rule: “In all my professional relationships, I pledge myself to the following rule of conduct:
I shall, in light of all conditions surrounding those I serve, render that service which, under the same
circumstances, I would apply to myself.”
Give me a call today to discuss how our products can bring that peace of mind to you and your
family. I’m at 778-837-2317 or [email protected].

Source: Recruitment with Knight Vision January 2012
The Knight Visionary says for January:
Plan your recruiting strategy for the rest of the
year.
 Schedule degrees during January
Plan NOW for the Spring Church Drive
 TRAIN your recruiters!
LET’S MAKE 2012 OUR BEST MEMBERSHIP YEAR EVER!!
In this New Year let us the question, “Are we doing all we can to reach out to our Brothers?” There are several keys
to being successful, one of which is to develop within the Council and State, an effective Retention Team. Some put much effort
into retention at the expense of recruitment while others focus on recruitment and don’t give retention a second thought. The
key to success is somewhere in between. Successful Retention Committees makes membership growth easier. Councils need to
learn to recruit to suspend so that the losses are not as devastating. In other words, if there is a true need to suspend 5 men,
do it over time so that as your recruit, you suspend. This helps ensure that your council is never in a big membership deficit.
Effective retention, like successful recruitment means there will be more men and their families serving God and the church;
more acts of charity will be undertaken which will make living easier for many. It will help ensure that through their good
works, “The World Will Know New Hope” in 2012.
How to Retain Members: http://www.kofc.org/un/en/officers/index.html
Many councils are attempting to retain members, but my experience is that very few are doing it correctly. This first issue to
sort out is that the Financial Secretary is NOT responsible for retention, he isn’t even necessary a member of the Retention
Committee. This most important committee is the responsibility of the Deputy Grand Knight working with the 3 Trustees.
Trustees are on this committee because they are responsible for the “assets” of the council. We have interpreted “assets” to be
dollars so we only have them do audits. The true assets are the members, hence they must be actively involved with the status
of the membership. The rationale is very simple to comprehend – no members = no $$ = no need to have Trustees. That is the
Retention Committee, not the FS. I have attached a PDF file to this newsletter that will help explain, please give it a read.
There are many reasons to retain our members. It makes membership easier; it keeps our Catholic families, Catholic; it
enhances the support we can give to our Church; it helps our Catholic men to become Catholic dads; and it helps bring more
charitable work to our communities. These are only a few of the many reasons to retain members. Let me tell you what
happens when we don’t reach out.
Retention Committees must offer the hand of assistance to our Brothers and let’s be clear, as long as these men are on our
rosters, they are still “Brothers”. There is no room in this Order for such words as “dead wood”, poor “quality” or the like.
When making a call, a retention committee member must ask a question such as, “We haven’t seen you in a few years, what
can I do to help?” And then listen to our Brother and determine what the best avenue is to assist him. But you MUST do
everything possible to speak with him. We had a case where a council said they couldn’t find a man they haven’t seen in 5
years. A State Officer found him. Turns out, he was in the city phone book. His mother answered the phone and when help was
offered by the Retention Committee members she offered “This is the first time anyone from the Knights of Columbus has
called. My son was hit by a car four and half years ago and has been in a coma ever since. Can the Knights help me to get to the
hospital to visit him?” Can you imagine discovering that we were about to release a man for not paying his dues when he could
not even open his eyes?? Until we speak with the member, we will never learn of his lot in life. Reach out to our Brothers, stay
in constant contact with all of them through active phone committees and make all of our members feel that the council cares
and is there for him. Don’t let a good man down. If he was good enough to recruit, he is good enough to keep!

“A Stamp Tribute to John Paul II” on Blu-Ray and DVD
Author is Philatelist / Brother Knight Anthony Sales
Early this year the Knights of Columbus Saint Patrick’s Basilica Council 12158, Ottawa organised the philatelic exhibition “A Pilgrim’s Journey – Pope John Paul II” by
Bro. Anthony Sales of the Archbishop Duke Council 6855, Richmond BC. This exhibition was sponsored by the Polish Embassy in Ottawa and the Canadian Polish
Congress. Past Grand Knight Michael O’Neill of the Saint Patrick’s Basilica Council, Ottawa was responsible for co-ordinating all the efforts which resulted in a very
successful exhibition in the nation’s capital.
This 160 frames exhibition was held from April 01-04, 2011 at the Saint Patrick’s Basilica, 281 Nepean Street, Ottawa and was inaugurated by Deputy Supreme
Knight Dennis A. Savoie. The Apostolic Nuncio Pedro Lopez Quintana, the Polish Ambassador Zenon Kosiniak-Kamysz and other members of the Diplomatic Corp
attended the opening. Held just one month before the beatification of Pope John Paul II on May 01, 2011, this exhibition covered the entire life and ministry of His
Holiness through stamps and other philatelic items issued by world postal administrations since 1979.
This philatelic display dedicated to Blessed John Paul II is now available on Blu-Ray and DVD disk and is entitled “A Stamp Tribute to John Paul II”. The length of this
video is 59 minutes. This high definition production was shot for the Knights of Columbus, Saint Patrick Basilica Council, Ottawa by renowned Canadian
Cinematographer and producer Roland K. Pirker who spent countless hours during the exhibition to capture the beauty of the stamps depicting Pope John Paul II.
The historical story comes alive as we watch a philatelic journey of the late pontiff on his 104 travels around the world. The script for this DVD is written by Bro.
Anthony Sales. The Gregorian Chants sung by the Choir of the Monks of Saint Benoit-du-Lac, Quebec and the amazing rendering of “Song for Karol” by award-
winning/songwriter and Catholic missionary Mark Mallett and Raylene Scarrott (Juno–nominee 2004) of Alberta, Canada provides the back ground music for this
DVD.
The production of this DVD was made possible by the kind generosity of Brother Knight William Zlepnig who sponsored the entire project and all proceeds from
the sale of this DVD will go towards the fundraising for the restoration work at the Saint Patrick’s Basilica, Ottawa. The production of this DVD was also co-
ordinated by able Past Grand Knight Michael O’Neill of the Saint Patrick’s Basilica Council, Ottawa. The first official showing of the DVD was held on Sunday
November 20, 2011 at The Southway Inn, corner of Bank and Hunt Club, Ottawa which was well attended.
The DVD will be available to all Knight of Columbus members and the general public through the Knights of Columbus Councils in Canada and the United States. The
Knight of Columbus members worldwide will also be able acquire and view this beautiful production dedicated to our beloved John Paul II who touched the lives
and hearts of so many people around the world.

John Paul II DVD raises funds for Ottawa Basilica
Written by Vanessa Santilli, The Catholic Register Friday, 16 December 2011 07:54
William Zlepnig shows A Stamp Tribute to
John Paul II DVD.- Photo by Roland Pirker/Rollframe
William Zlepnig was flabbergasted when he saw a stamp exhibit dedicated to Blessed John Paul II on
display in Ottawa last April. He liked it so much he decided to sponsor the creation of a DVD that would
keep the exhibit alive forever while at the same time helping to raise money for the restoration at St.
Patrick’s Basilica.
“The Basilica did a whole restoration outside and it’s (cost) up in the millions of dollars,” Zlepnig, a
member of the St. Patrick’s Basilica Knights of Columbus, told The Catholic Register.
Titled A Stamp Tribute to John Paul II, about $4 or $5 of every DVD sold will go towards the restoration
fund, he said.“Any profit that’s made will go towards the basilica,” said Zlepnig, who held a launch for
the DVD in November.
The exhibit was created from the extensive stamp collection of Anthony Sales, a member of the Knights
of Columbus from Richmond, B.C. Mounted on 160 frames, the stamps tell the story of Blessed John
Paul II’s life, his travels around the globe as well as important anniversaries and commemorations.
The DVD features footage of the entire stamp collection with music as a backdrop and narration to
describe the significance and history of specific stamps.
Upon seeing the exhibit displayed at St. Patrick’s Basilica, Zlepnig wondered if someone could film the
display since “once you take it down, it’s gone,” he said. “And this is a historic piece of evidence.”
Zlepnig then contacted Roland Pirker, director and cameraman for Rollframe Productions Inc. Pirker
didn’t charge Zlepnig for the shooting and editing of the video, saving more than $20,000, he said.
In total, Zlepnig spent about $8,000 to fund the DVD project through the Southway Hotel in Ottawa,
which he owns.
“Hopefully it’s going to sell… and hopefully we’ll get money for restoration and if we get millions of
dollars, then we can turn it over to charity.”
The DVD is 59 minutes long. It costs $24.95 and can be purchased by calling St. Patrick’s Basilica
Bookstore at (613) 235-7963 or e-mailing [email protected] .
