    Klaus-Jrgen Bathe is a Professor of MechanicalEngineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology,and founder of ADINA R & D, who specializes incomputational mechanics.[1] Bathe is considered to beone of the pioneers in the eld of nite element analy-sis and its applications.[2]

    1 Early life and educationBorn in Berlin, Bathe had his high school education atOldenburg in Federal Republic of Germany. He thenwent to South Africa, where he earned his graduatedegree in Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechan-ics from the University of Cape Town in 1967. Bathereceived his M.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering fromUniversity of Calgary, Canada in 1969. Then, he receivedhis Ph.D. in Civil Engineering fromUniversity of Califor-nia, Berkeley in 1971.[3] His thesis was on numerical so-lution of large eigenvalue problems, where he developedthe subspace iteration method.

    2 CareerDuring his time as a post-doctoral fellow (19721974) atUC Berkeley, Bathe et al. developed the nite elementprograms SAP IV and NONSAP, which have been usedby thousands of individuals and organizations in researchand practice and had a major impact in advancing the -nite element method. In 1974 he started the developmentof the ADINA system. Soon after, he joined the depart-ment of mechanical engineering at MIT.In 1986, he founded ADINA R&D, Inc.[4]

    3 Major contributionsBathe has made fundamental contributions in the niteelement analysis of structures, heat transfer, eld prob-lems, CFD, and uid-structure interactions. These con-tributions are widely used in commercial software codes.Specically, the following contributions for reliable, ac-curate and ecient nite element analyses are widely em-ployed: [5] [6]

    Formulation of shell nite elements (the MITC shellelements).

    Formulations of large deformations of solids (theTotal and Updated Lagrangian formulations).

    Solution techniques for large eigenvalue problems(the subspace iteration method).

    Solution techniques for contact problems (theconstraint-function method).

    Time integration schemes for the dynamic analy-sis of structures and uid-structure interactions (theBathe method).

    Schemes for fully coupled uid-structure interac-tions and multi-physics problems.

    Mathematical analysis of nite element schemes. The book Finite Element Procedures used as astandard reference text in academia and industry.

    Bathe is widely recognized to bridge the worlds ofacademia and industry in computational mechanics. [7]

    4 Honors and awardsBathe has received many honorary doctorates from insti-tutions around the world: Slovak Academy of Sciencesand Technical University of Zilina, Slovakia; Techni-cal University of Darmstadt, Germany; Technical Uni-versity of Rzeszow, Poland; Universidad Politcnica deMadrid, Spain; University of Bucharest, Romania; Uni-versity of Miskolc, Hungary; University of Buenos Aires,Argentina; and University of Cape Town, South Africa.[1] [7]

    Bathe has been listed as an ISI Highly Cited Author inEngineering by the ISIWeb of Knowledge, Thomson Sci-entic Company.[8]

    5 Editorial activitiesBathe currently serves as the Co-Editor of the Journal ofComputers & Structures.[9] He is also the editor of theSpringers book series on Computational Fluid and SolidMechanics.[10] He has organized the twelve bi-yearly con-ferences Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis and AD-INA, atM.I.T., 19771999, and the seven bi-yearly con-ferences Computational Fluid and Solid Mechanics [11]at M.I.T., 2001-2013.

    The goal of this Program is to produce graduates comingfrom any faculty of the University of Cape Town, SouthAfrica with outstanding leadership qualities and a strongsense of social justice, who will go on to play leading andsignicant roles in business, government, industry andcivil society in South Africa and on the African continent.[12]
