Kingsville Elementary School
Volume 4 Parent Newsletter December 6, 2012
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK A huge “thank you” is extended to all who
made American Education Week such a
success! Many guests joined us to participate in our students’
learning experiences. We hope you enjoyed your visit and
learned some new things about your children and their
educational experiences here at KES!
Mrs. Susan Fleming’s last day at KES was last Friday,
November 30th
. We thank Mrs. Fleming for her many years of
service and dedication to the boys and girls of Kingsville and
wish her well in her retirement!
As our fourth and fifth graders prepare to bring us beautiful
music to celebrate the winter holidays, it allows us to reflect
on the many blessings we have here at Kingsville…students
who love to learn and are kind to one another; parents who
send us enthusiastic children who are ready to learn; a PTA
that supports our instructional programs and enrichment
activities; volunteers who donate their time and talents; and an
outstanding and hardworking staff that provides a quality
instructional program for our students each day. In the midst
of these reasons to celebrate, we also realize that others may
not be as fortunate. This year, in addition to collecting hats
and mittens for those children that are less fortunate, we will
be collecting new books and school supplies for students in
the Moonachie School District in Bergen County, New
Jersey. These students were unable to return to their home
schools because of the devastation wreaked by Hurricane
Sandy. There will be a collection box in the lobby for new
books and school supplies that you would like to donate.
Thank you for thinking of others in their time of need and for
helping our own students learn to be compassionate by doing
so.
On behalf of the faculty and staff, best wishes for a joyous
holiday season and a healthy, happy new year!
-Susan H. Felts

NURSE NOTES
Head lice are a common condition in
school aged children. The infection
itself is called pediculosis. The head
louse can live only on the human head
and cannot live on pets or other animals.
Head lice can be contracted by being in close personal
contact with an infected person, wearing infected
clothing (such as sports helmets or hats), using infested
combs/brushes, or lying on a surface (like a bed, couch
or pillow) that has been in contact with a person with
lice.
There are three forms of lice; the adult lice, the nymph
and the nit. If they fall off a person, they die within 2
days. The nymph is a pre adult louse and matures in 7
days. The nymph also must feed on blood to survive.
Nits are lice eggs and are often confused with dandruff
or hair-spray. Nits are firmly attached to the hair shaft,
are oval shaped and white to tan in color. They take a
week to hatch.
The signs of pediculosis are itching or a tickling feeling
in the hair. Occasionally sores are found on the head
(caused by scratching). Lice are most commonly found
at the nape of the neck and behind the ears. Head lice
are treated by OTC or prescription medications. The
basic treatment plan is remove clothing and apply lice-
killing shampoo or cream rinse according the directions
on the label. It is extremely important to follow the label
directions exactly. The same is true if you decide to use
a nit removal product.
If your child has long hair you may need a second bottle.
Do not wash or condition hair prior to using the
medication. Do not re-wash hair for 2 days after the
treatment. Use the fine tooth comb to remove lice and
nits. If 8 to 12 hours after treatment lice seem as active
as before the treatment the medicine may not have
worked. If that is the case, contact your health care
provider.
Check and comb the hair at least every other day for 3
weeks to loosen and remove nits. If nits increase in
number then re-treat. Follow the medications directions
about how to re-treat.
Wash all clothing and bed linens in hot water. Soak
combs and brushes for 1 hour in Lysol or rubbing
alcohol. Vacuum the floor and furniture carefully and
frequently. Head lice can be eliminated by carefully
following the directions on the pediculosis control
products that are used.
If you need to contact me, I can be reached at 410-817-
9671 or by email @ [email protected]. You can also
get in touch with me by calling the school’s main phone
number.
ART NEWS Ms. Laura Dutton, Art Teacher
Third grader, Bryn L., won Honorable Mention for her
submission to the fire prevention contest in October. Her
artwork included the theme “2 Ways Out”.
Practicing Art students have been working on their
altered books. They are on display in the hallway for
everyone to enjoy. Please take a look at their books
when stopping by the school. They are also working on
a still life featuring several different objects. Students
have been studying their objects in order to create a
realistic setting.
During November the art theme focused on the fall
season. Kindergarten through third grade
practiced cutting and tracing ovals and circles
in order to create trees, pumpkins, wreaths
and turkeys. First and third grade created tree
and pumpkin sculptures. The fourth grade students
learned about leaves and several different art medias.
They created pastel positive and negative space drawings
and also created tie-dye leaves using coffee filters and
spray bottles. Fifth graders created personalized
Illuminated Letters by etching scratchboard.
In December the topic will shift to winter. Students will
create snowmen, snowflakes, winter trees, and
snowy scenes using their knowledge of line,
shape, color, and texture. Students will explore
watercolor pencils, oil pastels, tempera paint,
tissue paper, and chalk pencils. The fifth graders will
finish their colonial flags designs.
Artwork will be hung throughout the school so please
look for your child’s work when visiting KES.

Congratulations to the following students who have
completed their marathon…
Brianna W. Meredith H.
Maura P. Joseph H.
Colin P. Miranda D.
Please remember all running logs need to be returned to
Mrs. Williams by March 1st
(earlier deadline than in
years past).
This month all classes will be participating in
a tumbling/gymnastic unit. Also this month,
students will be exposed to a new set of
rotating equipment from Baltimore County: Geo mats.
Geo mats integrate math and literacy with movement
activities. We’re looking forward to trying something
new and fun!
As the weather gets colder more students tend to wear
boots to school. Please help to remind your children to
pack their tennis shoes on P.E. day. Students will not be
permitted to participate in class unless they are wearing
tennis shoes. Also, be sure to remember on special event
days such as “Girls in Pearls and Guys in Ties” to have
your child pack tennis shoes. Thank you for your
support!
World Hula Hoop Day is 12-12-12 and we plan to

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS NEWS Mrs. Patricia Parker, Reading Specialist
A BIG thank you to all who attended
our Barnes and Noble Night last
Thursday! The store was filled with
many Kingsville family members
purchasing books, listening to music, reading, enjoying
food and beverages from the Café, and scurrying around
the store, looking for answers to the scavenger hunt
questions. There were four names drawn to receive
prizes for the scavenger hunt.
The two winners of $5 gift certificates to our school
store are Justin B. and Tanner M. The two winners of
$10 gift cards to Barnes and Noble are Hannah H. and
Eli R. All money earned that evening supports our
Visiting Author Program.
Young Author Contest: Students in grade 2 and above
are eligible to enter a previously unsubmitted short story
and/or poem written within the 2012-2013 school year.
Each entry may have only one author and only one entry
per author may be submitted for each category. Deadline
for entries is December 19th. Please refer to the
information packet that is being sent home today to all
students in grades 2 through 5. That is where you will
find the contest guidelines.
If you have been in the lobby lately, you
might have noticed the 100 Book Challenge
bulletin board that shows the names of
students who have reached the reading
milestones. If your child is on target with
reading 12 steps each week, then by
Sunday, December 9th, step 158 should be reached.
Remember that the yearly goal is for your child to reach
step 400. Congratulations to all students who have been
keeping up with their independent reading!
S.T.E.M. FAIR PARENT/STUDENT MEETING An informational meeting will be held for parents and
students in 4th and 5
th grades who will be participating in
the S.T.E.M. Fair this spring. Many fourth graders and
their parents attended this presentation last winter and
found it very informative. All students in grades four
and five are invited and encouraged to participate. All
Grade 5 GT Science students are required to
participate in the 2012-2013 S.T.E.M. Fair.
Participation is expected for those fourth grade students
interested in being considered for Grade 5 GT Science
next year. Attendance forms have be sent home with
students.

THE COUNSELOR’S CORNER Mrs. Cynthia Combs, School Counselor
“’Tis the season!”
The holidays are here and the Lifetime
channel would have you believe that everyone is
having a wonderful time. Sometimes we wonder why
we aren’t feeling “as happy as we should be” during this
time of year. In our complex society that never stops,
with changing values and family structures, it’s
complicated.
During this time of year try to find some time to relax
with your family and friends (put it on the
calendar). Stick to normal routines as much
as possible. This helps everyone sustain a
sense of normalcy and structure. Your house
and holiday table does NOT have to look like those you
see in Better Homes and Gardens and Pinterest. Those
are things Martha Stewart dreams of, but she has “staff”!
You don’t have to make the gifts, add handmade tags
and have the children stamp craft paper with shapes you
carved out of potatoes for wrapping paper. A gift card
will work just fine.
Choose the things you and your family love to do.
Continue traditions that are meaningful to all of you. If
you stumble upon the ambrosia salad in the back of the
refrigerator two weeks after that special dinner, it’s
okay. Whatever you are feeling is normal and part of
life. Just go with that and carry on. We all do our best
but none of us are perfect.
So, when you are up to your ears in wrapping paper,
holiday baking and shopping, take a few deep breaths,
smile, count your blessings and enjoy this time. It only
comes once a year!
Happy Holidays to you and your family!
Food Drive!
This community continues to support their neighbors by
donating food to our monthly food drives. The
Thanksgiving Food bin was full many times over. Your
donations helped many families have a complete
Thanksgiving dinner!
During the month of December we will be collecting
PANCAKE MIX and SYRUP. Please continue
your generosity and remember the pancake mix
and syrup the next time you go to the grocery
store.
Word of the Month: Compassion – caring enough to
do something about someone else’s need
Take a moment to discuss with your children the
meaning and benefit of compassion. You may use the
recent hurricane, Sandy, as an example. Many people
lost homes, or had their homes damaged and have
nowhere to live. Many people who never have met them
have shown compassion in many ways. Some people
have sent money to the Red Cross. Others have
collected food, clothing and blankets. When an
opportunity presents itself, help your children experience
compassion by having them think of a way to help and
follow through. We will all be better for an experience
like that!
Have a wonderful holiday!

Music Newsletter

What’s Going On in Music?
Grade 5: We will be learning and practicing a new
rhythm: a dotted eighth note followed by a sixteenth
note. This rhythm has two sounds, with the first
sound being longer than the second sound.
Grade 4: We will be improvising eight beat
rhythm patterns by performing them “on the spot”.
We will also be practicing for the upcoming Winter
Concert.
Grade 3: It’s time for Flutophones!
Please send in your student’s order form
and payment so that we can order the
instruments.
Grade 2: We are practicing the performance of
repeated patterns with our voices or on instruments
to accompany songs and rhymes. Performing
repertoire with more than one part helps us to
develop our musical independence.
Grade 1: We’re getting very good at reading
rhythms with 3 sounds on a steady beat, “ta-tu-te”.
We’ll also be playing a fun game to go along with
one of our favorite holiday songs, “Jingle Bells”.
KG: We have been using our ears to determine the
rhythm of songs and rhymes. We are also learning
to read two pitches from the musical staff.
The ‘Patriotic Song of the Month’ for December
will be “America”. The title is also known as “My
Country ’Tis of Thee”.
The lyrics were written in 1832 by Samuel F.
Smith. The melody was taken from the British
national anthem, “God Save the Queen”.
Choral Corner
Come to Kingsville’s Winter Concert!
Chorus 4: The students in grade 4 will be
performing three songs. Their set will close with a
song from the film The Polar Express, “Believe”.
Chorus 5: The students in grade 5 have worked to
prepare a repertoire of songs for the Winter
Concert. During “Christmas Canon” the chorus will
be singing in 3 part harmony.
Sunshine Singers: We are excited for our second
performance, and have been working on
incorporating facial expressions and movement
into our pieces to enhance our singing.
