South Sacramento & Elk Grove Training Team
Heidi Schrumpf, JD, PhD
Consortium Director Co-Training Director
I’m the Consortium Director and Co-Training Director at South Sacramento. I started my career with KP as a resident in this program and fell in love with the BMS and training programs. Prior to working at KP, my career was focused on forensic psychology with a focus on assessment and chemical dependency. I worked with at-risk youth and incarcerated adults after completing my PhD at Palo Alto University, and my JD at Golden Gate University-School of Law. After completing residency and accepting a staff position with KP, I joined the supervisor team as the testing supervisor in 2014. I became Consortium Director and SSC Training Director in 2016. Unlike practicum or internship programs, residency year is really a point of professional and personal transition into being an early career psychologist. I enjoy the mentorship involved in helping our residents close any gaps in their training and begin to function as an independent provider. I also do this because of the people on our supervisor team. They are like a second family. . . caring, funny, respectful, and like any good family, slightly dysfunctional at times, but we are always there to support one another and the program. Being a part of this training program offers me so much; it’s difficult to narrow it down. Most predominantly, it keeps me on my professional toes. It’s easy to get set in our ways both personally and professionally. As a leader in the program, I must ensure I’m open to learning and incorporating new ideas into how to continually keep the program up-to-date, work with various cohorts of residents from a variety of backgrounds and foster growth and development of the team.
Jarrett Takayama ,PsyD
Co-Training Director
Hello! My name is Jarrett Takayama and I’m a Co-Director at the South Sacramento and Elk Grove training sites. I graduated from Pacific University-Oregon in 2013 and have been working at Kaiser Permanente for the past 5 years. My clinical interests in graduate school was individual, group and family psychotherapy with children and adolescents in outpatient settings, school-based programs or residential treatment facilities. Upon joining Kaiser Permanente, I fell in love with health psychology. I joined the training team in 2016 as a delegated supervisor for the Pediatric Behavioral Medicine rotation. I enjoy sharing my passion of pediatric health psychology with our residents and supporting them in this amazing interdisciplinary healthcare system. I’m very fortunate to work with such wonderful colleagues in our training program. Being a former resident of this program, I’m very invested in the success of the program, its supervisors and most importantly, our residents. I'm honored to share the last year of formal training with you. We will work with you to meet your personal and professional goals to support you in becoming knowledgeable, ethical and licensed psychologist.
Marc Becker, PsyD Primary Supervisor
My name is Marc Becker and I am a psychologist in Adult Psychiatry at Kaiser Permanente Elk Grove. I was born and raised in California and I am proud to be working and living in the Sacramento area. I did my undergraduate work at U.C. San Diego and completed my doctorate at CSPP/Alliant University in Alameda, CA. I began working for Kaiser Permanente in 2002 in Martinez, CA while completing my post-doctoral residency. I joined the team at South Sacramento Medical Center in 2003 and spent time working for the Departments of Occupational Health and Behavioral Medicine before settling into my current full-time position in the Department of Psychiatry. I feel fortunate to work with such a great team of providers (e.g., receptionists, MDs, therapists, nurses, support staff) here in Elk Grove. Additionally, I feel privileged to hear the stories of the Members that visit me and to support them through difficult times. As a practitioner of Narrative Therapy, I believe that the stories we tell about ourselves change (typically in a negative way) during times of stress, anxiety and depression. I feel that my job is to help people counter those negative narratives and tap into the stories of hope, survival and strength that tend to get muted in times of difficulty. I also pull from other therapeutic modalities including Solution Focused, CBT, MI, ACT and I use a lot of mindfulness in my practice. I’ve been a primary supervisor with in our post-doctoral training program since 2008. It has been a highlight of my career to work with the outstanding professionals involved in this program including the many post-doctoral trainees I’ve had the privilege to work with over the last decade. I value what each candidate brings to the table and collaboratively work with them to shape our supervision to fit their needs and goals in their last year of training. A sense of humor and irreverence are important to me in my work as they help me keep a positive work life balance. I believe change and growth are more likely to come from lightness than they will from being overly serious or self-critical. This goes for clients as well as providers. As a result, I believe supervision can be fun as well as productive. In my personal life, I enjoy fantasy football, hiking, camping, gardening, reading, live music and hacking away at my guitar. Thanks for reading and good luck in your search.
Paula Smith, PhD
Primary Supervisor
I received my master’s degree from San Francisco State University in 1991, then pursued a doctorate at the University of Wyoming which I received in 1996. After that, I did a post-doc at Kaiser South Sacramento and have been here ever since, about 22 years. I am one of the primary supervisors for the adult residents. I am a supervisor because I want to give back to others who are training to become psychologist and because I enjoy learning and mentoring. I appreciate the variety it adds to my work and enjoy being part of the team involved in the in the post-doc program. I enjoy teaching, learning, training, interacting. I like getting to know the residents and providing support and encouragement to them. I appreciate being involved in the last step of their journey to become a psychologist. It was a huge turning point in my life.
Tracy Simmons, PhD Primary Supervisor
Hello! I am Tracy Simmons, PhD, the primary supervisor for the Child and Adolescent postdoc here in South Sacramento. I am originally from the Bay Area and completed by doctorate at Palo Alto University, back when it was Pacific Graduate School of Psychology. I love to use my natural silly energy as a I work with parents and kids of all ages as a Pediatric Behavioral Medicine Specialist and help families make healthy lifestyle changes in the Pediatric Lifestyle Medicine Program, FitWeight. I have been working with kids and families as a behavioral health provider in one way or another since my undergraduate days. I enjoy working with kids and families as a way to shape our future generations and find ways to continue playing while at work as an adult. I think psychologists have a unique service to provide to the world and help to make the world a better place one patient/family/group at a time as well as making larger changes in the health care through policies that reflect overall health. My favorite part of supervising Postdoctoral Residents is learning from their experiences and knowing that I helped a future early career psychologist on their way to making the world a better place as well.
Danen Adelson, PsyD Delegated Supervisor
Hello!!! My name is Danen Adelson and I am one of the delegated supervisors in the Behavioral Medicine rotation. I achieved my doctorate degree from the Wright Institute in Berkeley, CA and my Bachelor of Science degree from UC Santa Barbara in Biological Psychology. I started with Kaiser Permanente in 2015 and prior to that worked in a variety of settings including university counseling centers, residential treatment facilities, and outpatient clinics. I was very lucky in the training and supervision I received during my professional development and attribute most of my success to these individuals who helped shape the practitioner I am today. I view solid training and supervision as an asset to not only our professional growth but personal as well. To be able to assist during this final chapter of your training so you can evolve into the authentic psychologist you are meant to be would be a privilege.
Nicole Preiss, PsyD
Delegated Supervisor
Nicole Preiss, PsyD, Behavioral Medicine Specialist (BMS) in the Adult Family Medicine (AFM) Department. I began at Kaiser for my Postdoctoral training in 2013. After my postdoctoral residency, I continued in Kaiser and became a BMS provider. I then had the opportunity to take on the role of delegated supervisor in the training program in 2016. I have been a delegated supervisor since 2016. I had such a wonderful postdoc experience myself that I have loved the opportunity to give back to the program. I have really enjoyed taking on this role and helping teach residents about the world of BMS. BMS was new to me as a resident, and it is a great opportunity to learn about other roles we can hold as psychologists. I like helping mentor residents through their postdoc year. There is a lot to learn and so many questions when residents start as a postdoc. It is so fun to see the growth over the year from the many experiences they have. I encourage residents to participate in many of the opportunities the program offers, and they may be surprised what feels like a great fit! I also love the unique background and experiences each resident brings with them since I am always learning from others!
Stephanie Kong, PsyD Delegated Supervisor
Hello, name is Stephanie Kong, PsyD and I’m a psychologist in the bariatric surgery department. I earned my doctorate in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology (now Alliant University)- Fresno. I have worked at Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento since 2013. The bariatric surgery rotation provides clinical experience where residents work with members wanting to address health concerns via a method that for some can be controversial. A rotation in the department allows for an understanding as to the extent to which being healthy can have such an obvious (perceptions about surgery) and subtle (lifestyle and social interactions involving food) impact on well-being, that needs to be considered, given the breadth of impact on self-care. Kaiser in and of itself is a great place to get doctoral training. Many places offer “traditional” training in psychiatry departments. At KP SSC, residents have the option to participate in the BMS (Behavior Medicine Specialist) departments. Within such, as a secondary supervisor, I provide residents with a health psychology rotation – bariatric surgery. There are limited KP locations that have a bariatric surgery program. KP SSC is the largest catchment area in Northern California, which also results in work with a very diverse patient population. The rotation is both simple – basic psychiatric evaluations for a medical procedure; yet complex – bariatric surgery within KP SSC requires a behavioral assessment and work with a multidisciplinary team in determining suitable surgical candidates.
Adriana Lloyd, PsyD
Assessment Supervisor
Adriana Lloyd, Psychologist in the South Valley Center Department of Psychiatry. I have been at Kaiser for the past 2.5 years. I currently am the psychological testing supervisor. This is my second year supervising residents. I supervise the testing, because I enjoy doing psych testing myself and enjoy imparting and sharing knowledge as it relates to testing. I enjoy seeing residents’ growth over time in terms of their abilities in psychological testing and enjoy seeing the process of residents growing more confident in their abilities and skills in becoming an independent practitioner.
Scott Spalding, MD Group Supervisor
I have been working as a child and adolescent psychiatrist in the South Sacramento Department of Psychiatry since 2003. I also serve as Assistant Chief of the department. I graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine. I completed my general psychiatry and child/adolescent psychiatry training at the University of Michigan Health System. I have been group supervisor in the post-doctoral training program since 2006. I enjoy teaching and mentoring the residents. My goal is to help them to feel supported and meet their educational goals during the year.
I enjoy the interaction and learn a lot from the residents. It is quite satisfying to observe their professional growth and development as they complete their training. I am proud that many of our former residents have become colleagues at TPMG.
"I had a great experience at the South Sacramento/Elk Grove postdoctoral
residency. I really appreciated the exposure to different levels of training throughout the year. The support from the training director,
management, supervisors, and the staff were excellent. Everyone was warm and willing to help in different ways. I certainly
grew as a clinician in more ways than I expected throughout the training year."

Program Highlights
Majority of residents are licensed within 1 year of program completion.
Residents receive financial reimbursement and time to study for licensing exams. 87% of South Sacramento/Elk Grove residents have been hired by Kaiser Permanente in the past 5 years (2013-2017).
The postdoctoral program at Kaiser South Sacramento/Elk Grove is a great place to combine quality
training in providing therapy in a Psychiatry department and providing specialized behavioral
medicine treatment to a diversity of patients you wouldn’t normally meet in Psychiatry. The clinics
are friendly, warm, and supportive. Not only is there great and plentiful supervision, South
Sacramento/Elk Grove offers a weekly cultural conversation hour unique amongst other Kaiser post-
doctoral training programs. It’s a great place to honestly assess your own cultural
awareness/limitations and learn more about your cohort-mates. Former Resident.

“I would recommend Kaiser South Sacramento and Elk Grove to anyone looking for a placement that will treat you like a future colleague all the while taking the responsibility of a first-class training program to help you feel prepared for the rest of your career as a licensed clinician.” Former Resident
I have found my year as a post-doctoral resident at Kaiser South Sacramento to be
valuable in both my clinical and professional development. The training program
offers a wide range of opportunities that helped refine my skills as well as widen my
scope of practice as a child psychologist. The training team is consisting of caring,
supportive, and skilled psychologists and psychiatrists who are invested in training
psychologists that can provide quality care and flexibly navigate various roles in a
fast-paced integrative health care system. As a working parent, I especially
appreciated the support from my supervisors in developing and maintaining a
sustainable work-life balance. Additionally, Kaiser’s generous stipend, health care
benefits, and educational leave/reimbursement also allowed me to really focus on my
last year of training and prepare for my career.
