JGR’s rebound, Dakota Purcell, says her experience in Semerang, Indonesia, will stay with her for the rest of her life. Dakota, a senior at TMHS, lived with two Muslim families in the city of 1.5 million – yet attended a private Catholic school. Says Dakota: “I believe the biggest thing I learned was that all humans are the same, no matter race, religion or social status. I learned that you don’t need a lot to be happy, as long as you surround yourself with good people. Indonesia has given me so many joys and taught me the importance of accepting who you are and work- ing hard.”

L to R: Reuben Willis, Sharon Cannon, Kevin Lee, Stephanie Hoag, Lindy Stoops (Pam Varni’s daughter), Pam, and Lucy Ibesate last Thursday cooked at the Glory Hole. Servers were Tim Banaszak, John Cannon, and Eric Carver. Nicole Legere shopped. This is the 30th year JGR has made dinner on the last Thursday of the month at the downtown homeless shelter.
September is Education and Literacy Month. JGR contributes to this Rotary priority in a number of ways, including four UAS scholar-ships, totaling $5,050. Two of those – each $1,000 – are in the names of sons of JGR members and are provided by those families. Corey King, below, son of Ron King, died in 1993 at age 16. Mac Behrends, right, son of Candy and Dick Behrends, died in 2008 at age 22.
If you are interested in helping with literacy on a local level go to www. unitedwayseak.org and click on the volunteer link. Look for LEARN UNITED, Reading Tutors Program. Other education and literacy volunteer opportunities at that site include Head Start (ages 3-4), Juneau School District, The Learning Connection (adult education, including teaching English to new arrivals) at SERRC (SE Alaska Educational Regional Resource Center), Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and BAM! (Body and Mind) After School program at both middle schools (to which JGR has donated).

Thank you, cruise industry!
The cruise ship luncheon is hosted by the industry as a fundraiser for Rotary. JGR appreciates the event and the donation. About 1.1 million cruisers were expected to spend $183 million in Juneau this year.
