MEASURING LIFE – Hal Pratt
When my retirement was approaching recently,
the question most asked was “How are you going to spend
your time?” Some people thought I would find myself bus-
ier than ever, others thought I would be bored to death.
Everyone said I needed a plan.
Four months later, the answer to the question is
becoming clearer each day. I spend my time measuring.
At first, I measured bookcases, chairs, beds and
chests. We moved from a large old farmhouse into a small
cottage. Just trying to see where things would fit made
measuring a full time job. I knew it was getting serious
when my tape measure snapped from being pulled out
and sucked in too many times.
Then came the moving van. We used a U-haul to
make the move. We packed it with stuff the way a squirrel
packs a tree hollow with nuts. Each item was measured
and angled till the whole thing fit together like pieces in a
jigsaw puzzle.
For years, our family has accused my wife and me
of living in a museum. Our walls are covered with photos
and prints and paintings, not to mention the feathers, ant-
lers, and found treasures. Now I needed to measure each
item before hanging, then measure where to put the nail
in the wall to get things somewhat straight, then measure
again because the straightness thing never quite works for
me.
A librarian for life, I’ve snuck a lot of books into this
little cottage. Now I happily measure size and topic to get
a place for each one on the limited shelves I have. How
many books on a single topic do I need? How many bird
identification books before they become redundant? How
many medieval history books? How many books on how
to write, when you know the answer is simply to do it?
For years, I have measured the temperature and
weather twice each day, recording the information in a
datebook for yearly comparison. My last frost in 2013
was May 27th. It was on May 19th in 2014. Now that I’m in
a different place, I need to start this measuring all over
again.
I live by a lake. I’m going to measure water tem-
perature as well as air temperature now. There are trees
all around. Maybe I should measure how many leaves I
rake in the fall? I can measure when the first bird of each
species appears each spring. I can measure how many
rocks are needed for a five foot stone wall.
The only thing I do not dare to measure is how long
this will go on before I drive my wife nuts. Some things are
better not measured.
