“For I will show you lessons from our history, stories handed down to us from former generations. I will reveal these truths to you so that you can describe these glorious deeds of Jehovah to your children and tell them about the mighty miracles he did. For he gave his laws to Israel and commanded our fathers to teach them to their children, so that they in turn could teach their children too. Thus his laws pass down from generation to generation. (Psalm 78: 2-6, The Living Bible) Psalm 78 reminds us that we must pay attention to lessons from history, and hand down stories of the Lord’s mercies and miracles from generation to generation. This is especially true in families, as we need to know how our purpose correlates with not only our present, but also with our past. We have a responsibility to teach our children and grandchildren the struggles, accomplishments and lessons learned from our foreparents—the good the bad and the ugly. But God! History is important. Take the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, for example. Did you know that the AME Zion Church:
• Was founded in 1796, in response to the unbearable racism in the Methodist Episcopal Church;
• Emphasizes the salvation of the whole person--mind, body and spirit;
• Maintains four colleges and universities and two theological seminaries including schools in Liberia and in Nigeria;
• Was dubbed the Freedom Church because of its concern for racial justice, peace and harmony;
• Has over one million members; • Claims Sojourner Truth, Harriett Tubman and
Frederick Douglass among its members; • Has member churches on all continents except
Australia; • Is a different denomination than the AME and CME
Churches;
• Is governed by a 12-member Board of Bishop; (our Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Richard K. Thompson retires in July and a new bishop will be assigned. Please continue to pray for Bishop Thompson, as well as whoever is assigned to our District);
• Convenes a General Conference every four years to elect new bishops (if there is a vacancy) and to review and pass “legislation” to more effectively govern the church and its ministries; (This year the General Conference, comprised of clergy and lay delegates, will meet July 20-July 26 in Greensboro, N.C. This is 50th meeting of the General Conference and live streaming will be available. Go to amez.org for more information.)
As Freedom Temple takes a break from our full ministry schedule in August (with the exception of our church-wide cookout, Vacation Bible School and the Back to School Festival), I pray that you will take the time to teach your family’s history (or to start a new family tradition), as well as to learn more of our denominational and church histories.
Blessings, Pastor Toni
P.S. Please spread the word about our Bilingual Outdoor Revival July 13 and 14. Bishop Nunez is an anointed and appointed man of God!
