Services? Does the catered meal come full service? This means the caterer will handle table settings, wait staff, bar service and cleanup in addition to food preparation. If neither the caterer nor the venue provide tables, chairs, dinnerware, napkins and other necessities, you’ll need to be prepared to rent them yourself.
Menu? Do you have a specific type of food in mind? Find a caterer who specializes in the style of cuisine you’re after and see if you can try samples before you hire. Don’t forget to ask your caterer if they can handle any special food requirements your guests may need, such as vegan, gluten free and kid’s meals, and if these will cost extra.
Cost? What’s the average price range and does the caterer offer packages? Catering will be a huge part of your budget, so take your time to weigh all options. Find out how many appetizer and entrée choices come with the package; are costs itemized or does the caterer offer an all-inclusive rate?
Cake? Does the caterer provide wedding cakes, as well? You may be able to save if you can get your cake included in your catering package rather than going to a separate baker.
Alcohol? Will the caterer provide alcohol or do you need to handle the bar separately? There are usually two ways caterers (or venues) charge for bars: a set fee per person or by the amount of alcohol consumed. Most caterers provide the alcohol, but it can save you money to supply it yourself. Though check with your caterer or venue first to see if they charge a corkage fee, which could derail your savings plan.
Time? You’ll need to talk to you caterer about timing logistics such as delivery, setup and breakdown, and if there are additional fees for any of these. Find out how much time they’ll need to set up and what time they will need access to the wedding site on the day of the event.
to Ask Your Caterer
The who, what, when, where, why and how of feeding your guests can
be endless. Use this guide to make sure you cover all your bases when hiring a caterer.

For the modern bride who’s always in style, here are the top wedding gown trends of 2019:
Meghan Markle Mania The Duchess of Sussex has inspired many of this year’s trends, including clean lines and simple tailoring, boat necks and high-neck halters (inspired by her reception dress).
Two PiecesCrop-tops are making their way from the runway to the aisle. Separates hit the scene a few years ago, but the matching crop-top/high-waisted skirt combo is still making a big splash.
Polka DotsFor the fun bride who loves a touch of whimsy, dotted dresses popped up all over spring 2019 runways in fabrics like flocked tulle and point d’esprit (a.k.a. Swiss dot).
MetallicsGold and silver accents as well as full-blown disco-inspired gowns ruled the runways. For the bride who loves glitz and glamour, a metallic dress is a fun break from the ordinary.
BlueWhy not make your “something blue” your entire gown? For the bride who breaks the rules, blue is the non-traditional color of the year with designers sending dresses down the runway in everything from soft powder blue to deep violet.

The influence of the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle can be seen everywhere this
wedding season. Inspired by the classic elegance of their majesties’ matrimonials, brides are embracing a return to tradition and formality.
Ballgowns are back. After seasons of the boho bride in flowing sheaths, designers are returning to dramatic full skirts fit for a princess.
Rococo wedding cakes. Let them eat cake! Dessert tables have gotten creative over the years, but there’s nothing quite like a grand, towering wedding cake. Think metallic touches, ornate trim and show-stopping flowers.
Three-piece suit for grooms. After years of more casual alternatives for menswear, 2019 will see the return of the classic three-piece suit. A fitted, impeccably tailored design will be perfect for a sleek, elegant wedding.
White. It’s a nice year for a white wedding! This year, many brides forego the eclectic, colorful trends of recent years in favor of classic white flowers and décor.

A common mistake many couples make is not realizing how time consuming photos can be, especially when coordinating large-group photos. Make a game plan with your photographer ahead of time about the types of shots you want and how long he/she estimates they will take.
TOP FIVEWedding Planning Mistakes to Avoid
Even with the help of a wedding planner, making sure your wedding day goes off without a hitch
can be a big challenge. The following are common mistakes to avoid for smooth sailing into happily ever after.
The photos, the ceremony, the reception – oh my! There’s a lot to do in one day. Create an itinerary of how everything will go down with plenty of time to revise. This will cut down on chaos and confusion the day of and ensure you have enough time to do everything without rushing.
Not making a schedule for the day.
Not allocating enough time for photos.
2019 • www.showmetheozarks.com • 19
Ignore that old statistic that 10 percent of those you invite will RSVP “no.” Err on the side of caution and assume everyone is coming. You’ll be in trouble if guests show up and have nowhere to sit.
This one only applies to outdoor weddings, but you’d be surprised how many couples simply cross their fingers and hope for perfect weather. No matter what the forecast says, have a plan B ready.
Another scheduling snafu to avoid is allowing speeches to drag on too long. An overly long or boring speech can kill the vibe. While you can’t control what the best man will say, you can make sure they keep it within a 10-minute time limit.
Not setting a time limit for speeches.
Not planning for rain.
Assuming 10 percent of guests won’t come.
20
- Make the Announcement. The first step is to let everyone in on your exciting news. Some couples send an announcement in the mail while others opt for a Facebook post. Just be careful – not everyone is on Facebook, so be sure to tell close family and friends before you make the post. Next, check with your local newspaper about engagement announcement pricing and details. Optional: Do an engagement photoshoot and use beautiful, professional photos for your announcements.
- Create the guest list and set the budget. Bust out a notebook, pen and calculator – it’s time to make your guest list and budget. These two go hand-in-hand because they greatly influence each other, so as you consider costs, you may realize where you need to add or subtract from the guest list. Also, think about aspects of your wedding where you know you’ll want to splurge, like photography or food.
Congratulations, bride-to-be! Your sweetheart popped the question, there’s a beautiful ring
on your finger, and…now what? With all the details of wedding planning to consider, it can be difficult to know where to start. As a newly engaged person, here’s a list of items to check off first.
Newly EngagedGuide to Being
2019 • www.showmetheozarks.com • 21
- Set the Date. Sit down with your fiancé and consider the following: How much time you’ll need to plan and prepare, the time of year you’d like to wed and cost-saving strategies. Couples can save money by having their wedding during the off-season or on a week day, so setting the date with your budget in mind will help you decide.
- Book the Venue. Since venues book quickly and usually require advanced notice, it’s important to put venue shopping high on your checklist. Having your budget, date and guest count already determined will help you weed out venues that don’t fit your needs.
- Send Save the Dates. Save the Date announcements are typically sent no less than six months before the wedding. A fun idea is to make your Save the Date a custom magnet so your guests can keep the lovely reminder on their refrigerator leading up to the event. Please note: Everyone who gets a Save the Date must also receive an invitation, so make sure your guest list is finalized.
- Throw an Engagement Party. Whew! You’ve made some tough decisions, so now it’s time to have a little fun! An engagement party can be anything from a backyard barbecue to an elegant dinner. It’s also a great time to give gifts asking friends to be bridesmaids or groomsmen (or bridesguys and groomsgirls)
