Jonathan Samuel Head of Social Performance Anglo American Jon Samuel is Head of Social Performance at Anglo American. In this role he has responsibility for the development and delivery of policies, strategies, training programmes and guidance documents relating to the company’s host communities. This work has included development and implementation of: • the Anglo American Social Way, the company’s highly regarded management standards
for social performance; • an innovative suite of social performance indicators; • the mining industry’s first standardised stakeholder complaints and grievance
procedure; • a unique post-‐graduate level programme for Anglo American’s senior managers on the
changing expectations of our host societies, and how we can adapt and prosper from them; and
• the Socio-‐Economic Assessment Toolbox (SEAT), Anglo’s award winning guidance manual for community relations practitioners.
Under Jon’s leadership, Anglo American’s management of community issues has increasingly been cited as a benchmark for the extractive industries and the company consistently tops key industry rankings for social performance. Jon is a regular guest lecturer, and has been asked to give talks on Anglo American’s approach to social performance at a number of prestigious universities including Cambridge and Oxford in the UK, Queensland in Australia and New York’s Columbia University. Jon studied at University College London and the University of Cambridge and lives in London with his wife and two young daughters.
