Dear Parents, In this week’s סדרה we learn of the מבולthat was brought upon the genera on of began מבול tell us that the פסוקים The .נחon the 17th of חשון and was completed on the 27th of חשון the following year (when all those in the תיבה were able to leave). Rashi explains in 'פסוק י"ד ,פרק ח that the lasted 11 days more than one lunar מבולyear to compensate for the 11 extra days in each solar year (354 + 11 = 365). That was because the sentence against the דור .was for one complete year המבולThis explana on is difficult to understand. A er all, the calcula ons in the תורה are always based solely upon the lunar calen-dar. Why was there a need to include the solar calendar into the calcula on here? o חז"ל en stress the effect that human ac ons have upon the en re physical world. The דור המבול corrupted their environment so badly that even the animals began to breed with other species. That’s why they were also destroyed. Rashi writes in 'פסוק י"ג ,פרק ו that even the top layers of earth were washed away in order to cleanse the spiritual pollu on. With this concept, we can answer our ques on. The purpose of the מבול was to thoroughly cleanse the physical world. The תורה indicates in 'פסוק כ"ב, פרק ח that during the מבול, all natural events ceased. The various seasons did not func on, nor did the constella ons; even night and day didn’t exist (see above men oned Rashi). All this was because all of nature needed to be cleansed of its טומאה. That is why the solar year was so important. The seasons and constella ons follow the solar cycle. In order to properly cleanse them, they needed to make it through the complete cycle. For that, 365 days were required.

This should give us a clear insight into the profound impact our ac ons, whether good or bad, have upon everything around us. Every מצוה that we do has the ability to bestow ברכה and שלום upon the world. Every עבירה can, ושלום חס do the reverse. May we use this power wisely and truly benefit all of mankind. Dear Parents, It’s hard to believe we are already a month and a half into the school year. With being in and out for the Yomim Tovim, the me seems to have just flown by. In addi on, I recognize and appreciate how well the school year has started, B’H. I am proud of our precious talmidim and our faculty. Looking at indi-viduals, as well as at en re classes, the superior level of learning, posi ve ruach and good middos is readily evident. It is rewarding to see so many people show real personal growth from year to year. Char ng a course for a school year is exci ng on mul ple levels. Se ng goals as individuals and mapping out how to meet these goals are vital prerequisites for sustained success. As one expands to larger groups, ie. a class, a yeshiva, those same components are s ll necessary. Over the past years we have B”H, achieved growth in key academic areas. As examples, we've successfully created a comprehensive skill – based curriculum through all grades and have seen growth in differen ated learning. This year, we aim higher; to pull so many important elements together in order to a ain a acquiring the Torah they-קנין התורהlearn. Achieving קנין התורה in a par cular לימוד means acquiring mastery of the content. It ins lls confidence and excitement to keep learning and empowers a talmid to use his skills with growing independence in the next pasuk, perek, etc. Addi onally, the Torah serves as a guide in eleva ng the person and influencing his day to day ac ons. Working toward this comprehensive goal is exci ng and rewarding for rebbe and talmid alike. It begins with driving a talmid toward the learning with rele-vance and passion. A rebbe will find ways to tap into a talmid’s strengths to help him achieve success and then translate the ini al success to foster growth and improved ability. This culminates with a strong emphasis on חזרה. Retaining what is learned by making חזרה rewarding and enjoyable helps a person truly "own” what he has learned.

We look forward to sharing exci ng developments as we progress through the year. You will hear about a new program shortly that focuses on ele-va ng our Erev Shabbos and Shabbos in conjunc on with what we've discussed. We are very proud and excited about the many talmidim who excelled at our Yomim Noraim Tefillah ini a ve. So many boys worked to improve their tefillos during those Yomim Noraim. I am confident that the improvement in tefillah shown by these תינוקות של בית רבן has posi vely impacted all of K’lal Yisrael. Thank you Rabbi Rothberger for leading this great program. see the children's smiling faces throughout the

halls of YBH.

MEET OUR NEW  FIFTH GRADE REBBE 

Rabbi Reuven Hoff has many years of teaching

experience. He taught at Yeshiva Darchei Noam under the leadership of

Rabbi Yaakov Horowitz for many years and at RYNJ

for the past two years. He brings crea vity and ener-gy to the classroom with singing, Oneg Shabbos

and many other ac vi es that enhance learning. His athle c nature is appreci-

ated by the talmidim during recess. Rabbi Hoff also runs summer camps.

Rabbi Finkels’ Kitah Hey: 5B is davening and learning with great enthusiasm. We are learning about the power of our tefillos and how they affect the en re world. In Mishnayos we are already halfway through Maseches Megilla a er which we will be star ng Gemara Perek Eilu Metzios. The en re class is looking forward to this great milestone; Gemara learning. In Chumash we have completed the first perek of Parshas Mishpa m and now are star ng the second perek of Mishpa m that deals with the complex halachos of Shomrim. In Navi we are concentra ng on learning lessons from the way Penina treated Chana and the reasons why the Aharon was captured by the Pelish m.

A Peek                    Into Our Week:  ECD HIGHLIGHTS

Sour and Sweet in Pre 1A‐M 

In honor of the esrog, Pre 1A M integrated the mitzvah with science as they observed, compared

and contrasted esrog’s rela ves, the orange, grapefruit and lemon. In taste, the orange won by

a landslide. The puckered expressions on some brave faces as they tasted the sour grapefruit and

lemon were humorous and in keeping with the spirit of simcha. The children hypothesized about what would happen when the juices of the fruit

were blended with baking soda, a base. Most said they thought something might happen to the combina on. It turns out that all the brews

bubbled with the lemon juice concoc on in the lead.

The yeladim also did a sweet mitzvah of mak-ing a giant card

for our cha‐yalim to be

hand-delivered by morah’s son when he does miluim next

month.

Kol hakavod to Pre 1A! 

Rabbi Wieder’s Science Lab: The eighth grade boys began their studies in biology by learning how to use a microscope, observing prepared slides and then crea ng their own wet-mount slides by using local pond water. They were on the hunt for micro-organisms. They also used the water from our turtles. Seventh grade boys, using the generous grant by CIJE (Center for Ini a ves in Jewish Educa on) are learning about science and technology in this year's STEM curricu-lum. Here we see how two students used play-dough and clay to create an electronic circuit to light up a LED, ... oh, and maybe a frog, or a turtle, depending on how you look at it.

Mrs. Ebstein’s Second Grade Class: Our second grade class is in full swing and busy with hands-on learning! We are working in small groups with leveled readers that appropriately challenge each boy on his level. The boys rotate centers, so in addi on to read-ing they all have the opportunity to do various mul -sensory ac vi es that target phonics, comprehension, or grammar skills. In math, the boys are working with cubes to develop a concrete understanding of place value. In social studies, we discussed the importance of being a good, responsible ci zen. Each boy presented an exam-ple of good ci zenship with either a picture or a skit. We have many talented ar sts and actors in second grade.
