James Madison University is a very special place in the Shenandoah Valleyof Virginia, surrounded by beautiful mountains and just two hours from
the nations capital of Washington, D.C. We are a fairly large university
with approximately 20,000 students, yet offer a very warm and hospitable
environment with a family feel and a strong culture of community and civic
engagement. Named after the Father of the U.S. Constitution and a great

INTERNATIONAL FIRST YEAR (IFY)
For students who meet JMU admissions requirements, but
need additional English language support, the International
Study Center (ISC) delivers a customized English language
and academic preparation program for undergraduate
students to help them integrate into American university
life while enjoying the full Madison experience.
The International First Year (IFY) provides pathway
programs that combine English training and 2731 JMU
course credits for a smooth transition into degree success.
Students can choose from four different pathways
that lead into more than 100 programs of study.

A combination of English, academic,

Math and science courses paired with courses from the
liberal arts curriculum give you the foundation necessary
to advance to the general engineering degree. The
Engineering pathway requires high level coursework in
physics and calculus to successfully transition into the

This pathway differs from the Engineering pathway
in the science courses offered: general physics and
biology are taken instead of the calculus-based
physics courses in engineering. The STM pathway
provides the necessary foundation to advance to
degrees in science, technology, and mathematics.
JMU is the rst university to acquire Science on a Sphere
(SOS) a sphere-shaped, visualization tool that was
developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA). SOS uses four projectors to
project onto the surface of a six-foot diameter sphere
and is used for research, education and outreach.

The certied hard copy high school transcript is the only document that needs to be mailed directly
to the International Study Center. All other documents should be sent digitally as PDF attachments.
All documents should be translated into English. Bank or nancial documents,

Students are required to complete the IFY program consecutively without semester breaks.
The Universitys academic year takes place over two equal 15 wee k semesters in the fall and spring and a shorter 12 week summer se mester. Original copies will be required upon arrival at JMU.
