Our right standing with God was gained for us by a SUBSTITUTE. The word meaning BY A SUBSTITUTE is vicarious. By his perfect life and his willing death Jesus canceled our sins and set us AT-ONE with God. The word for this is atonement (setting at one with God). Because Jesus is God, his Vicarious Atonement could count for everyone. Because of Christ’s finished work we are justified (declared not guilty).

How did Jesus redeem us?

To redeem us, God’s Son had to humble himself.

What do you think it means to “humble himself”?

Page 13: Jesus Christ Redeemed Us Lesson 5 What do these words mean? Ransom= Redeem= Redemption= Price paid to buy someone back, set someone free To buy back.

Philippians 2:5-8Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross!

Page 14: Jesus Christ Redeemed Us Lesson 5 What do these words mean? Ransom= Redeem= Redemption= Price paid to buy someone back, set someone free To buy back.

It means that he emptied himself of the full use of His

divine power.

What does it mean that Jesus humbled himself?

With What Did Jesus Redeem Me?

(Ephesians 1:7) In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace.

(1 Peter 1:18-19) For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19) but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.

The price Jesus paid to redeem me was his innocent suffering and death…

With What Did Jesus Redeem Me?

(Isaiah 53:5-6) But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6) We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

(2 Corinthians 5:21) God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

The price Jesus paid to redeem me was his innocent suffering and death…

as our substitute.

From what did Jesus redeem me?

(Romans 6:16-23) Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey--whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17) But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. 18) You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. 19) I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness. 20) When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. 21) What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! 22) But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. 23) For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Jesus redeemed me from

Sin (its guilt and power)

From What Did Jesus Redeem Me?

(Romans 6:23) For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(2 Timothy 1:10) but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

(John 11:25-26) Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; 26) and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"

Jesus redeemed me from death, so I can enjoy eternal life.

From What Did Jesus Redeem Me?

(Genesis 3:15) And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."

(1 John 3:8) He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work.

(Hebrews 2:14-15) Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death--that is, the devil-- 15) and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

Jesus redeemed me from the devil’s power, so I am no longer his slave.
