This is the word that came to Jeremiah from theLORD: Go down to the potters house, and thereI will give you my message. So I went down to

the potters house, and I saw him working at thewheel. But the pot he was shaping from the claywas marred in his hands; so the potter formed itinto another pot, shaping it as seemed best to

    him.

Then the word of the LORD came to me. He said,

Can I not do with you, house of Israel, as thispotter does? declares the LORD. Like clay in thehand of the potter, so are you in my hand, houseof Israel. If at any time I announce that a nation or

kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down anddestroyed, and if that nation I warned repents ofits evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it thedisaster I had planned. And if at another time I

announce that a nation or kingdom is to be builtup and planted, and if it does evil in my sight anddoes not obey me, then I will reconsider the goodI had intended to do for it.

    Lessons from the Potter

God is at work in the big changes in our worldas well as the small changes in our lives.Nothing is outside his ultimate authority.

We cannot fully understand and appreciate thepurpose of God behind all events but must trusthis goodness and justice.

This does not mean that "everything Godintends is set in stone" God is actually opento our response (personally and collectively).

    Lessons from the Potter

God reveals his by his word and his Spirit, theway he wants us to live and sometimes specificareas in which he calls for obedience. He

sometimes reveals his intention to bless ordiscipline.

He watches and waits for our response andengages with us on the basis of this. Our

response is not the defining factor but part ofwhat determines the future.

Are we reading the times, watching, looking forthe activity of God in our world?

Are we listening for the instruction of God,personally, corporately, nationally?

Can we discern the voice of truth from themany voices of opinion?

Do we bring our confusion, disappointment, the

apparent inconsistencies and our strugglesback to God?

Do we still have courage to obey and then tolisten for the next step?
