PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION

Students o{ music have on occasions at iempted to put the melodies of some of ihemore outstanding Japanese folk songs to ihe noiai ion of Western music in order to pre-serve ihem from obl iv ion.

Frorn the l i terary poini of v;ew, ihese folk-songs have been translated into Engl ishand co lected by scholars since the beginning of modern japan. However, a complete col-lect ion of ihe melodies has not been assembled.

A rhorough st i rdy o{ these folk songs wh'ch are character ized by the places of iheiror igin requir€s the effods of special ized scholars :nd experis in music and l i ieraiure.

My effor is in compi l ing ihis book does noi preiend io be such a special ized siudyof lapanese folk songs l t is in iended to be a col lect ion of the mosi repr€sentat ive songsol our country and to offer a handbook of the iolk-songs which are st i l l being sung through-

Folk-songs are disi inguished from ihe so-cal led popular songs which may be invogue for a period of i ime but which are soon forgotten. Some o{ the folk, songs col lecied inihis book were ai one t ime pcpular songs but have developed into {olk-songs by thei .being sung over half a century though their authors v/ere forgotten. Al l rhe songs as-sembled have been sung before 1900 and are si i I being sung and may r ieht ly be regardedas folk 'songs of Japan.

True folk songs have slch individual pecul lar i i ies and character ist ics that their nota-i ion in Western nrusic can be accomplished only imperfeci ly, for i t is noi only dl{ f icul tto indicate the {requenty occurr ing grace nores of JEpanese songs which include evenquafter tone iniervals but there is also a rremendous di f ference in the manner of s ingingthem among thc Japanese people themselves.

Moreover, io isol : ie rhe melody of a Japanese song frorn ihe rhyihm of i ts accom-pari ment of hayashi, lhe orchestra of { lute. drum and samisen, is io give only half of thereal i iy of the song. This is part icular ly i rue in songs of which the rhythm of i is accom-paniment has been emphaslzed. and any attempt to notate them in the Western siy le is notonly a violai ion of the sp r i i of the songs bui also fai ls to reveal the true melody

Again, ihese folk songs come to l i fe only when they are sung in the style pecut iarto the lapanese and especial ly lo ihe people of ihe region from which they or iginated, and they lose nrLch of thelr beauty and appeal i f they are.sung by vocal is is who havebeen trained n ihe Western manner of s inging vibrtao.

Since these folk-songs cont: in ihe individual dialects of ihe var ious distr icts, i t isideal that rhey are sune by the nat ives of th€ region to which ihe songs belona.

The impossibi l i ty of adequately i ranslai ing the catchy, rhythmic phrases, which inthemselves hlve no nreaning bui which give a def lni ie personal i ry io the folk-songs ofJapan, has required me to om't ihem in my book. These phrases may be compared toihe hi , ho. the merry-o, " ta ra,ra boom de ay, "yo ho,ho' and simi lar port ions ofEngl ish songs.

Despite these technical di{ f icul t ies, I have endeavored io compi le some of the repre-seniat ive tolk songs of lapan because of my e:rnest wlsh to introduce them to Westernpecpies For these reasons, I have h:d to choose only ihose folk songs wi ih simple me-lodies and rhyihm, avoiding those which are ful l of i r i l ls and iurns and at the same t imelowering somewhat ihe key of the melodies sung sotto voce in ihe higher register or rais-ing to a certain exteni ihose of lower tones which are us'r : l ly sung by men.

ln receni years at iempts have been made to arrange some Japanese folk-songs sothai they may be sung wi ih the accompaniment of a piano or in the style of iazz.

I t is my hope in cornpi ing ihis book that through this col leci ion of lapanese folksongs which are in the main in ihe minor scale and are character ized by melodia lamen-toso m:y conir ibute to ihe bir th of a new style of comdosit ions.

PREFACE TO THE REVISED EDITIONln the previous edit ions, merely 33 songs out of ihe innumerabJe number of

Japanese folk-songs were selected and iniroduced which lef t much to be desired so that,in this Revised Edit ion, I have added f ive orher songs. In making this addit ion I havesej€cted sonSs whrch are most popular ly sung by the lapanese today, namely, "Bon Songsof Soma , - 'Songs of.Saitara' , Songs of Picking Saff lowers , Songs of Kokkir iko" and

of the world as might b€ ndicaied, In part, from the correspondences addressed to thecompiler f ror vaf ious parrs o{ the wor,u.

Of ihe growing number of such persons, fhe one who mrght be consrdered as themost ardent ioler of Japanese rolk songs, I shoujd l ike ro me4i ion ihe narre of Vaf laJl lo Reinh.rot a proless, oral +olksine;r . of W.sh,n8fon. D.C. LSA

Thrs person I was nformed, pract iced six hours dai ly, such pieces as. for instance,' 'YasuEi Bushr", The Mower's Sones' and "Ezashi Oiwake", whiah are di f f icul t numbersto render even for the lapanese themselves. There are other pefsons no less ardent than this lady who have written me {romCanada and lsrael. And i t is a wel l -known siory thai ihe Soviet bar i tone singer. ArturEizen, dur ing his concert tour of japan, sel€cted "Soran Bushi ' as one of his tavori te

The Wesiern musical notat ions areinadequate to t fanscr ibe the character ist ic f ineness of the melodic ornamentat ion of Japa-nese folk-songs. Even i f perforcedly transcr ibed, the transcr iber himself may oft€n be unab eio reproduce the music fforn the music note.

Songs of Oshima(Oshima Bushi)

I am of OshimaThe isle of Divine Fire;Smouldering in mY heart,

the lire never dies.

Azaleas and camelliasLight up the mountain; The boat carrying mY lord

Brightens the sea of Oshima.

ll you are the man as gallant

As tales would have You be,

I wish you iould stoP the tide

Off the bay of Chiga-saki

Mountainous waves I see

Out upon the sea;-fhey

are for my belovedTo prove his courage.

The port of HabuMay be l ikened to a Pouch; But alas, it has no stringTo close its mouth !

Soran Song of Hokkaido

Yaren soran, soran, soran, soian,

Whether herrings com€ or not,

We asled the gods to harvest;

Each and every god whined,

kon, kon-won't come, choi.

Hear the songs of sea-gulls

Over the ocean waves

And you can't give up

The life on the sea.

Yoichi is a goodly town

You've to visit once at least,

For the golden waves

Aro <ao^ t ' ^ ^ + lD <D .

Were to speak as we do,

Your message I would hear from them

Or the message I would send to you.

S6ran Song is one of the folk songs ot Hokhaido, being nexr otdest to OiwakeSong. It is so named from the shorting to nark rime, iike yoho, as ir isorigtually the shouting at drawing up herrings. The o.iginal home of this songis said to have been Tsugaru in Aomori Prelecture as the fishermen there useatto make such shouting as this to mark time for ner-fishing. Since many6shermen in Hokkaido have come from Tsugaru, rhey p.obably brought withLhem there this s6ran song.

EighL hundred years ago, du.ing ihe age of the Fujilrara Regency, SadoIsland was ar isle of er.iles. Sanished thiiher were such histo.ic figures as theEmperor Juntoku aDd Sainr Nichircn, founcier of the Nichiren secr of Bu.ldhism.

The discovery of a gotd mine at a place called Aikawa on the jsle about 850years ago-durinA the rule of the TokuAarva ShoAunate brought an age ofprosperity and splendor. cold production here used io be big enough to make animporiant financial mainstay of rhe Tokusarvas_

Iis deposits nea.ly gone, the mine is noly in a decrepit srate. But the isleis rich in local color, rraceable larg€ly ro tragic stories about exit€s and memoriesof the Aolden age.

Mosi expressile of the tocal cotor is Sado Okesa, or -{ Fotk Song of Sado.As to the origir of the vord ,,Okesa,, many tegen.ts are tot.l. Once upon aume, goes one leaend, there lived a dch otct man in ihe town of Ogi on the iste.Ee kept a cat, which he loved dearty. Evnrualty his fortunes wenr down, analh€ was reduced to sorry straits vith many duns at his heels,

The animal iook compassion on its poor master. To cto him a good turn, rh€cat tmnslormed itself into a beauriful girl and took to the profession of geisha, calling hersetf Okei.

Okei's singing and dancing soon won her rousinA fame far and wide. Hersong and dance b€came a fad and her name, throuah various srages of trans-mission, becam€ corrupted into ,,Okesa.',

Another legend-not necessarily or ihe orjgin of rhe name_has it that adauAhter of Nobutaka Oda, a warlord, fe in tov€ ivith a nametess young man andeloped with him to Aikarva Town. There they opened a small resraurant for

Every time she sarv men from Kyoro (and Osaka), alrawn hither in largenumbers by the goidrush, she nas seized with an inrense homesickness for theMiyako (th€ capital, then in Kyoio). To everyone deparring thither she entrusi-ed a message to folks at home. The message, according to rh€ legenai, was inthe vrords vhich make the first stanza of Sado Okesa:

Tovard Sado and toward Saclo,EveD rhe trees and the herbs bend towarai ir.Is Sado a good ptace io abiite?(Dor'i ask me.)

The second stanza runs:How could I come to Sado,ThouAh you may urge me so?The isle is forty, nine ri awayOver rhe rouAh ride sea.

The distance of 49 ri (t ri-about 2.4 miles) is from Wajima on the Noto

Before the discovery of the Aotd mine Saclo hacl more communicarion wirhthe Kansai districi ihan lvirh Edo (nov Tokyo). The eartiest ateveloped town onthe isle was Ogi. Bruno Taut, notecl cerman architect, visiia.l Ogi white inJapan and admireit locat houses as ,,welfbatanc€d and highty cutri;aied struc_tures." These buitdings and orher retics of cutture sri]] .emain.

In ihe age of baryes, Ogi Town was ihe gateway io Saato Island. Norv it isreplaced as such by Ryozu po.q onty ihree hours arvay by steam€r from Niigara.

The close ties between Saato anal Niigaia City are sung of in Sado Okesa ihus:Over snowy Niigata_The sun is settjng in a snolv.srorn1.Methinks Sado is asteep,As therc,s no light on the iste.

Son6s o{ Gui6(Guio Bushi )

When I go out of Gujo-,I wring my sleeves,Though no rain is falling,I wring my sleeves.

High up in the skYThe moon is round and round;\Mith no sharP corners,To wed a couple smoothlY enough.

Look at a calfOver there at Kodara:The little one is blackAs the cow is black.

One may commit suicideBy jumping from the Somon bridge.Like Saibei the drunkard of Kodara,Drowned with a barrel of sake.

Gujo is known widely and afarAs the home of swift horses; The warrior's famed steed "Surusumi"Has come from Kera, one of its villages'

There'll be song after song,The dance everlasting,AnC there'll be manYA moonlit night ioo.
