The APICS Houston Chapter Board of Directors
welcomes you to 2015. We hope you enjoyed
the holiday season and took some time for
family and perhaps performed a few
postponed items around your home.
In December, several members of the APICS
Houston Instructors and Board of Directors
attended our 2014 holiday celebration party at
Eddie V’s off of Kirby. What a great venue for a
holiday party including a private room and I understand everyone
had a great time!
Several members of the APICS Houston Board of Directors shall
attend the Terra Grande District meeting in Queretaro, Mexico on
Friday and Saturday, January 9 and 10. These events are
educational rewards for APICS Houston Board of Directors
members and event attendance rotates throughout the active
group volunteers. Discussions at these events include
Professional Development Meetings (PDMs), hosting seminars,
education class updates, Chapter management techniques and
tips, and interaction with other Chapter District members to
discuss best practices.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT MEETINGS
On Thursday, January 15th, Mark Struczewski will present "How to
Overcome Roadblocks on the Path to Your Success" at The Hess
Club. In his presentation, Mark will provide solid strategies on how
anyone can overcome roadblocks on their path to success. He
believes that everyone’s definition is as unique as their
fingerprint. Despite this, his strategies can be used by anyone
regardless of where they are on their journey, what education they
have, where they live, how old they are, etc.
The biggest challenge is the actual implementation. Many people
possess much knowledge but fail to implement that knowledge
and as a result remain where they are in life. In his presentation,
Mark shares his signature story that led him on the path to
learning about success and how to obtain it.
Mark Struczewski is a traveler, pursuing his dream of speaking,
writing and coaching others to success. He empowers others, who
like himself, want more, but find themselves stuck. He shares the
practical lessons he’s learned that help people break through
their internal barriers and move toward the life they really want.
On Thursday, Feb 19th, Thomas J. Dirmyer, Vice President CLP
Chemicals, L.P., will present "Navigating a Supply Chain Focused
Career Path". In his presentation, he will discuss the important of
balance. Balance among the various aspects of a successful
supply chain career in one’s education, training, and professional
development is paramount. Equally as important is the ability to
be upwardly mobile to prevent stagnation, to develop both
personally and professionally, and to generate personal wealth
and happiness.
Thomas will discuss the need to constantly expand one’s expertise
and the need for professional development. This discussion will
be a fun an exciting look at how supply chain careers come about
and what they can become.

APICS CLASSES
Our winter classes are starting and some registrations are still
being accepted. Plus, registration for our spring classes is open. If
you have interest in registering for our classes, I highly suggest
planning ahead and registering early to ensure class availability.
Unfortunately, we continue to have to decline registrations when
our classes are full. Further, if you register please attend the class
since we are restricting our class audits. The determination is
made by Chuck Connelly and his decision is final.
Our new class locations at Powell Industries and Houston Food
Bank locations are improving our educational reach to the greater
Houston community. To satisfy our customer needs, we continue
to add more locations and classes and are targeting The
Woodlands and Sugar Land for expansion.

Quick, what's XIV squared? You can't do advanced math without the zero. And you can't write precise prose without a well-developed vocab-ulary. The magic of the alphabet is that twenty-six letters are all you need to spell every word. The beauty of Lego blocks is that you don't need very many to build something extraor-dinary. Imagine how hard it would be to get anything done, though, if you only knew 17 letters. In most fields your work is hindered if you only have a few of the most basic tools. Understanding more of the build-ing blocks of finance, or marketing or technology are es-sential if you want to get something important done. Here's my advice: Every time you hear an expert use a word or concept you don't understand, stop her and ask to be taught. Every time. After just a few interactions, you'll have a huge advantage over those who didn't ask.

NAVIGATING A SUPPLY CHAIN FOCUSED CAREER PATH—PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT MEETING
In his presentation, Mark Struczewski
will give solid strategies on how
anyone can overcome roadblocks on
their path to success. He believes
that everyone’s definition is as
unique as their fingerprint. Despite
this, his strategies can be used by
anyone regardless of where they are
on their journey, what education they
have, where they live, how old they are, etc.
These strategies are simple to understand and apply. The
biggest challenge is the actual implementation. Many people
possess much knowledge but fail to implement that
knowledge and as a result remain where they are in life. In
his presentation, Mark shares his signature story. The story
that led him on the path to learning about success and how
to obtain it. Many people look at the jet setters of the world,
the movie stars and athletes, and think that that is a lifestyle
they could never achieve. So, they resign themselves to living
for 5 o’clock or the weekend or vacation or retirement. Mark
believes that no one is a mistake. Everyone was created on
purpose for a purpose. And it is his passion to empower his
audiences not only with knowledge but motivation to
implement these strategies
BIOGRAPHY:
Mark Struczewski is a fellow traveler, pursuing his dream of
speaking, writing and coaching others to success. He
empowers others, who like himself, want more, but find
themselves stuck. He shares the practical lessons he’s
learned that help people break through their internal barriers
and move toward the life they really want.
He speaks on how anyone can create their own small and
large life successes. Based on his passion for success, Mark
wrote his first book, “A Succès Fou (sook say foo) Life: What
It Is And How You Can Live It” in 2011.
His passion is to spread the good news that everybody can
achieve success. No matter who you are, what you do, or
where you are, you can achieve success. As many, sadly,
have forgotten this, Mark’s presentations provide audience
members with strategies they can use immediately that help
them overcome the roadblocks on their path to success.

Recruiting Supply Chain and Operations Professionals
Recruiting manufacturing, supply chain
& operations professionals for a fast
paced manufacturing organization like
Powell Industries has its challenges.
Learning the complexities of the
environment and evolving lean initiatives
are the first challenges to conquer. Now,
the bigger challenge is to identify the
supply chain and operational talent to design, implement and
sustain our lean strategies. Powell, like most companies, is
looking for ways to create efficiencies, reduce costs and lead
time, and minimize waste. Training current employees and
targeting new employees with lean manufacturing experience
will create success in the marketplace.
Attracting the right talent and future leaders for an
organization will ensure the continued success of the
organization. Houston’s current economic climate is
competitive. Powell’s talent acquisition and development
programs help us succeed. First and foremost, as a
Recruiting Professional, I target candidates who value their
profession. Professionals involved in continuing education
and professional associations will immediately stand out
amongst the competition. Program participation and the
successful completion of certifications are indicators that the
candidate is knowledgeable on latest processes, industry
news and has access to a professional network. I can
honestly say that I qualify candidates initially because of their
certifications, education, and professional memberships.
These candidates lead the pack.
APICS is a renowned professional association offering a
variety of professional certifications which creates value-add
to employers. My recruiting strategy for supply chain &
operations professionals such as manufacturing engineers,
compliance, logistics, purchasing & procurement and
strategic sourcing will always include candidates with APICS
certification.

OVERVIEW: The world has changed considerably over the last
two decades. Email, the Internet, and now social media have
radically increased the interconnectedness of the world.
Globalization has led to increased competition. Customers
demand more specialized products through an increasing
number of channels. Government regulations are placing
more and more operating constraints on companies. These
changes have dramatically increased the complexity of the
environment in which companies operate, and the pace of
change continues to accelerate. This increase in complexity
has serious consequences for companies—risk and cost to
operate increase exponentially and complexity increases. In
fact, many companies now find complexity has become the
biggest obstacle to improving performance and driving profit-
ability. Through instructor led discussions, real world case
studies, and practical, hands-on applications, this seminar
will provide you with the knowledge and the tools to wage a
war on complexity in your company’s operations and supply
chain.

In this discussion, Thomas Dirmyer will
discuss the importance of balance.
Balance among the various aspects of a
successful Supply Chain career in one’s
education, training, and professional
development is paramount. Equally as
important is the ability to be upwardly
mobile to prevent stagnation, to develop
both personally and professionally, and to
generate personal wealth and happiness.
A Supply Chain focused career is one of technical expertise,
tactical and strategic decision making, and complex initiatives
From site-selection, to carrier and mode choices to systems
implementation, a supply-chain focused career is one of the
most exciting paths one can choose. With a vast array of subject
matter, opportunities to participate in the global economy, and
strong financial rewards, thousands each year choose this
rewarding career sector. Thomas will discuss the need to
constantly expand one’s expertise, the need for professional
development, and how to avoid being categorized as “the
logistics guy or girl” and being categorized in a fashion that
prohibits consideration for C-level roles in today’s fast-paced
organizations.
This discussion will be a fun an exciting look at how Supply
Chain careers come about and what they can become. Thomas
Dirmyer is currently the Vice President and Partner at CLP
Chemicals, L.P. a privately held oleochemical commodity trading
firm. Thomas manages a portfolio of approximately $100 Million
in turnover and touches a variety of industry verticals including
food, pharma, personal care, industrial, and energy production.
