Essex County Council propose new junction
PROPOSAL FOR NEW
JUNCTION 7A
ON M11 (HARLOW)
ECC are proposing a new junction (Junction 7a)
to the east of Harlow. It will link with the B183
somewhere between Mayfield Farm and the
bridge over Pincey Brook. ECC are not
engaging with the villages along the A1060 and
B183 because their modelling indicates that
traffic along these routes will halve as a result of
the new junction. So no schemes are planned to
mitigate increased traffic through these villages.
All the traffic that presently cuts through Little
Hallingbury, Hatfield Broad Oak, Hatfield
Heath and Sheering to get to Harlow, the M11
and Epping is going to go by some other route!
And none of the traffic that battles from the
Chelmsford direction along the A414 to the
M11 is going to divert to the new junction via
these villages!
What do you think?
There are no exhibitions in Uttlesford so get
along to the exhibitions at
Harlow Civic Centre until 31 January 2014
Epping Library until 31 January 2014 and
Sheering Village Hall on 10 January 2014, 3pm to 8pm
and make your views known.

Perhaps you would pass on to the person who is
having trouble with Broadband and being thrown
out.
As you know I live on Stortford Road, near New
Common and I am often `thrown out' of the
web/email. Perhaps you would pass this info on to
her for me, if it's not too late. There are also often
times when I can't get in to the web. I made an
assumption that it was busy and because I am at the
`end of the line' I had to expect my speed to be
slow.
What happened following the public meeting earlier
this year when I thought we were having fibre optic
cables installed and our speed would get quicker? It
appears from a letter in the December issue
this is no longer so.
Jean Clarke
Hi Bruno,
Further to your campaign re BT( The second word is
'tardy' I'll leave your readers to guess what the
second word is) I bought a tablet last week - Bad
move they're not meant to be played with by
wrinklies.
Back to the plot. As a special deal I also got some
cloud memory, 500Gb - that's techno speak for lots.
As an experiment I tried hooking up my PC and was
asked to Upload all files? so, that evening, I did.
When I got up the next morning the PC was sat there
quietly doing nothing and when I checked, it had
uploaded nothing, nowt, nada!
It would seem that my dear wife had got up in the
night to get a drink and ever conscious of the high
cost of electricity had turned off the PC.
......The next night I tried again (Stay with me, we're
getting to the plot ) and although it hadn't managed
to complete the task, it was manfully plodding on.
It actually took the rest of the day and Good old BT
managed to average 131Kbits, fractionally over
double the old dial up system could do.
Facetious as it might seem I could have loaded all
the files on to a memory stick and got a passing
pigeon to take it to BT faster, at least BT are now
able to download plenty of sport while you wait for
the rest of the outfit to get their act together

HELP THE HOMELESS AT WHITECHAPEL
Homelessness is on the increase, 27%of rough sleepers
have been on the streets for 2 years or more. Rough
sleeping is up by 47% this year. Whitechapel served
102586 breakfasts this year, an average of 281 per day!
Between 200 and 300 people come every day for break-
fast and to take advantage of a shower, clean clothing,
medical services and somewhere to have a shave. There
is also further help available a recovery programme, life
skills and job skills training and addiction recovery. Fur-
ther information at www.whitechapel.org.uk On behalf of the Whitechapel Mission for the Homeless,
may I thank the many people in the area who have
donated clothes, toiletries and food during the year. To-
day, Mark and I took over 24 sacks of food, clothes, and
especially toys which are given to children living under
very difficult circumstances and many in care. We would
particularly like to thank the URC Friday Club who gave
us toys beautifully wrapped and ready for Christmas also
Members and Friends of the Hatfield Heath URC who
also generously gave gifts at our toy Service yesterday.
At the URC we collect warm clothes, blankets and towels
throughout the year as well as breakfast foods and toilet-
ries – Please ring us if you have a collection for
us.730581. Again thank you so much you have no idea
how much your kindness is appreciated.

BT BROADBAND I'm new to the lovely area of Hatfield Heath and live
in The Close, Broomfields. Like the rest of you, my
Broadband is very slow and sometimes doesn't work
at all, especially on my iPhone. Like all of you, I'm
very busy in the lead up to Christmas but have still
taken Jo Taylor's advice and have registered myself.
It took just a few minutes.
Kind regards,

On 26th November Year 6 visited Duxford
Imperial War Museum as part of our World
War II (WW2) studies. We were greeted in the
Learning Zone by our instructor and she took
us around the eight different zones:kitchen, home guards
WW2 lost and found. It was great fun as we were allowed
to touch ancient artefacts. We saw lots of aeroplanes from
WW2 and also had the opportunity to walk through the
prototype of Concorde.
After lunch we had a look at some more aeroplanes and
ships in the hangers. All of these were actually used in the
Battle of Britain. We also went to the operations room
which was actually used in WW2 so it was interesting to
find out what happened in Duxford during WW2.

Year 5 On 21st November Year 5 had a Super Hero Day.
The class came to school dressed as the
Superhero that we had designed in our Art and DT lessons.
When we arrived we found that our teacher had been
kidnapped by a villain and the classroom had a colossal
hole in the middle of the floor. The chairs and tables had all
been knocked over too!
been sent to help us to overcome the obstacles which were
down the hole and to rescue our teacher. We each had a
map of the tunnels leading from the hole and we had to
work in pairs to plan which of our powers we would use to
get past all the obstacles. When we had written our plan,
Red Lightning (who we really think was Mr Aiken in
disguise!) chose the pair with the best plan to go down the
hole to find our
teacher. Luckily Mr Aiken was rescued by Tortoise Boy
and Guardian Girl just in time for the last part
of the day when all our parents came in to see the
Superhero work we have been doing all term in Maths,
Literacy, Art and DT.

Nineteen raindays in November 2013 only produced 2.35 inch-
es, which is 83% of our average for this month.
November rainfall was identical to that we received in Septem-
ber.
Overall November has seen real extremes of rainfall as you will
see from the details below.
November Extremes
High 6.66 inches in year 2009
6.32 inches in year 2000
Low 0.28 inches in year 1995
0.57 inches in year 1991
By the middle of the month the Blue Tits had arrived
in quite large numbers and were seen queuing up to
get at the peanuts.
Ground feeding of the other birds tended to be only
in the mornings and roosting seen to be much earlier
than normal.
On November a male Blackbird was seen eating
fruits of the Himalaya Honeysuckle (Leycesteris
formosa), which are much more numerous than is
usual. This was a first for us.

THE NEXT MEETING WILL BE
THE AGM ON 18 MARCH 2014
At The URC In Hatfield Heath
REPORT FROM THE LAST MEETING 19 NOVEMBER
Metal detectorist Tony Carter was the speaker at
the Society's November meeting, the subject of
which was Coins Found In North-West
Essex.Tony had spoken to the Society about two
years ago, but this time he brought along a differ-
ent selection of finds. Tony has been a detectorist
for over forty years and during that time he has
found at least one coin from almost every period
of British history, from the Celtic tribes to our
present queen. He showed examples of these coins
in two large trays, tracing English numismatic his-
tory from the reign of Henry I. Tony told us that
he had found fifteen gold coins during his career,
from a Celtic stater to a guinea of George III. Most
of his coin finds were silver, bronze and potin (a
brittle alloy of bronze, tin and lead). Tony had
found a large number of Roman denarii, and these
coins were so plentiful now that one could be
bought for as little as £20. Tony's most valuable
find to date was a gold ring of the early Saxon pe-
riod (seventh century), which he correctly referred
to the British Museum authorities under the Porta-
ble Antiquities Scheme. It was possible that the
ring might be connected to king Radwald, of Sut-
ton Hoo, as it combined both Christian and pagan
symbols. At present Saffron Walden museum is
trying to raise the money to buy it. Tony also
brought along a number of artefacts that he had
found; these also covered the range of English his-
tory. Examples were a medieval seal and knife
pommel, a 20th century sweetheart brooch, and a
1933 bowling medal. He also showed examples of
South African identity discs from closed mines,
which he had discovered when he had lived in that
country. All in all, Tony's collection comprised a
fascinating look at the coins and household arti-
cles that our ancestors had used. We will certainly
ask him back at sometime in the future.

WELL NUMBER 46. A new find, thanks to Mr Michael Hockley and Mr

on the right of the Chelmsford Road when leaving
the village, just before Stone Bridge and close to the
boundary of the last dwelling. It was filled in some
years ago. Frank Walsh
Can anyone advise me as to the correct etiquette for attracting the attention of the those
individuals who insist on walking/jogging/cycling
up the middle of the road with their earphones or
headsets on and living in their own little world?
Should one give them a hair-raising honk of
the horn or perhaps a bump up the bum
with ones bumper?Someone is going to get hurt one of these days and
of course it is BOUND to be the motorists fault.
I have driven behind these people for two or even
three hundred yards and they do not have a clue that a vehicle is behind them.
They have obviously either
forgotten or have never been
taught one of the basic rules of
safety on the public highway,
that one should LISTEN as well
as look for other road users!
Come on, you know who you
are; PLEASE use a little
common sense and at least
remove these devices when on
the public road. Give yourselves
a chance of staying safe.

Accordionists from all over the Thames Area will
be coming to compete at a music festival on
Sunday 9th February in the village hall.
Competitors will hope to qualify for the United
Kingdom Championships in Liverpool later in
the year. Entrance is free and we hope that the
event will encourage people to come and listen to
the musical talent of this region. The festival will
consist of a huge variety of sections to cater for
Classical, Musette, Polka and Scottish styles of
accordion music. There will also be aged group
sections. The younger players will be timetabled
for the morning. Entertainment sections and
bands will be held in the afternoon. There will be
a full timetable of the events the week before the
competition when we have received all the entry
forms from the musicians.

Hypothermia happens when a person’s body temperature drops below 35°C (95°F). Normal body
temperature is around 37°C (98.6°F), Hypothermia can
quickly become life-threatening and should be treated as
a medical emergency. If someone you know has been
exposed to the cold and they are distressed, confused,
have slow, shallow breathing
or they’re unconscious, they may have severe
hypothermia. Their skin may look healthy but feel cold.
Babies may be limp, unusually quiet and refuse to feed.
You should seek medical help immediately if severe
hypothermia is suspected – Dial 999 to request an
ambulance.
If you’re with someone with
hypothermia, while waiting
for an ambulance, remove
any wet clothing and wrap them in blankets or
towels. If they’re conscious, give them something warm
(but not alcoholic) to drink. If they’re unconscious, not
breathing, and you can’t detect a pulse after feeling for
60 seconds at the carotid pulse in the neck, then cardio-
pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) should be given if
possible.

IN FLANDERS’ FIELDSForemost in many thoughts throughout the coming
year will be the centenary of the start of the First
World War and associated with that the Flanders
poppy.
The poem “In Flanders’ Fields” written by John
McCrae speaks of the many poppies that were the
first flowers to grow in the churned-up earth of the
Flanders battlefields after
the carnage which took
place there. Strangely, it
was an American, Moina
Michael, who inspired the
idea of the Remembrance
Poppy by vowing always to
wear a red poppy as a
symbol of remembrance of those who served in the
war, an idea later embraced by the Royal British
Legion and other veterans’ groups.
Poppies have long been used as a symbol of sleep,
peace and death. Sleep because of the opium
extracted from them and death because of the blood-
red colour of the common poppy in particular. In
Greek and Roman myths poppies were used as
offerings to the dead and those on tombstones
symbolise eternal sleep.
The Flanders poppy, the
common poppy, was also a
common sight in the
countryside in this country at
that time. It was not unusual to
see vast numbers growing
amongst the corn and at
harvest time the reapers were
quite often overcome by the narcotic effects of the
cut stems.
Quite recently a couple bought an old farm in
Herefordshire and set about restoring its derelict
garden. They dug over and rotavated the ground to
recreate the borders only to find that in the following
spring they were taken over by innumerable poppies.
These turned out to be opium poppies. It transpired
that the house had been built on a site once occupied
by an apothecary. Opium had been a medicinal staple
since the middle ages and was used in medicine until
the early 20th. Century. Laudanum, a tincture of
opium in alcohol being especially popular. On the
darker side it is interesting to know that 2013 saw the
best ever crop of opium poppies in Afghanistan.

The papaver family, poppies, meconopsis, escholtzias
and the like are a firm favourite with gardeners. Their
hardy nature, tolerance of disturbance and tendency
to seed readily make them a good choice for filling
awkward spaces or difficult conditions with a wide
range of colour and form. Multicoloured Californian
or Iceland poppies complement the herbaceous
border plants very well or can be naturalised in
meadow gardens. The larger varieties
of opium poppy, some of which can be
double flowered, create patches of
spectacular interest and provide the
flower arranger with their beloved urn
shaped seed capsules.

1063. HIGHWAYS
The Parish Council have met with ECC Highways and
engineering design consultant regarding junctions at Dunmow Road/A1060 and Stortford
Road/Sawbridgeworth Road. The meeting was positive and designs are being prepared before the end of this
financial year. It is likely that the Dunmow Road/A1060 junction will be improved first and hopefully in 2014/15, with the Stortford Road/Sawbridgeworth Road junction
following, perhaps in 2015/16
ECC have published a public consultation on junction 7a of the M11. The preferred scheme is shown below and
the timescale would be completion around 2019/20.
Consultation period extends until 31st January 2014. Alternative proposals are available at
www.essex.gov.uk/junction7aThe Parish Council encourages all residents to visit the public consultation sessions and to make their views
known.
