All the prep work is complete for our 4th Annual Black Top Tour.
I can only hope with all the forewarning that we put out that you have your rooms and are planning to go. I understand there are still some rooms available at hotels that are close to the casino.
The Can-Am hotel’s number is 218-386-3807 and the Super 8’s number is 218-386-3723. Both these hotels are in close proximity to the Seven Clans Casino where we are basing all our activities out of.
I hope you plan on coming, this year we expect this will be our biggest. The Itinerary is at the rear of this issue of the “RUMBLER”.
The James Valley Street Machines are always moving ahead with more items and functions to keep all of us interested and active in our club.
This year we will be hosting and running the “60-foot experience”. There is a poster in this issue of the “RUMBLER”.
The James Valley Street Machines and Don Wilhelm Inc is again hosting one of the biggest shows in the area on September 23rd. Rod, Jeff & Lisa are excited to have this show again. This will be our 7th year and all money collected is going to the Huntington’s Disease organization. In a short 3 years of donating money collected, this show has produced over $55,000.00 to Huntington’s. I hope you can show off your car. Again, there is big money going to the winners. Look over the poster in this issue of the “RUMBLER”. We’ve added 2 other trophies/money at this show. $200.00 and a trophy to the car club with the biggest representation at the show. No local car clubs are qualified, so any car club outside a 25-mile circle of Jamestown is qualified. Also, we will have the Wilhelm Zephyr award. This award is for the car that absolutely dazzles the judges. Even if you don’t win the People’s Choice or the Show Stopper, your car/truck will be qualified for this award. Pays $200.00 and you get a trophy also. Mind you that no money is taken from the proceeds or collections for the Huntington Disease organization. All cash awards are made possible from the Wilhelm family in memory and recognition of Dan Wilhelm who we lost in 2012 to Huntington’s.

1953 CHEVROLET 210 CLUB COUPE

The 1953 Chevrolet's had a new, more powerful engine and a redesigned body. The new cars looked fresher and more modern than the somewhat outdated 1949-52 models. They did however have more than a passing resemblance to their predecessors.
The Series' names had been changed and this 1953 Chevy Two-Ten Club Coupe was sandwiched between the entry level One-Fifty and the better-appointed Bel Air.
While the Two-Ten didn't quite match up in terms of side decorations with the Bel Air the two-tone paint still made these cars look special.

Also new for '53 were one-piece curved windshields which really helped the new cars look more modern. It was also the year that
power steering was first available on Chevrolet's - something that was previously reserved for more luxurious cars.
Inside the Two-Ten enjoyed cloth upholstery with this car benefiting from a $65 optional push-button AM radio. Also present in the center is the optional tissue dispenser.

Under the hood is the 115 horsepower "Blue Flame" six, 235 cubic inch engine
Chevrolet sold 23,961 Club Coupes for the 1953 model year at a base price of $1,726. A total of 649,821 Two-Tens were sold across all models in the line-up that year. The biggest seller by far was the 4-door sedan.

Like many professional sports figures have a pre-game ritual, professional race car drivers have a pre-race ritual as well. Each week before a driver climbs into their car, a pre-race ritual takes place. Whether it is hugging a loved one, saying a prayer, not shaving, or eating the same thing each week, drivers often have strange ways of preparing for an upcoming race.
But for Dale Earnhardt Jr., one pre-race tradition is quite special and ties him back to his late father. Prior to each race, Stevie Waltrip, the wife of NASCAR Hall of Famer Darrell Waltrip, writes out a Bible verse for Earnhardt that he can tape to the inside of his car prior to the race.
Stevie Waltrip, whose husband started racing in the 1970s, began this practice with Dale Earnhardt. Dale was always on
the look-out for her special verses on race day. Stevie told Gannett News in 2001, "If it was getting close to race time and I hadn’t given it to him, he’d look around for me and say, ‘Hey, where’s my Bible verse?’"
She continues that tradition with Dale Jr. Each week before the race she provides him with a verse just as she did with his father. Many times, Earnhardt’s wife Amy shares those verses on her personal Twitter account. (Look for the twitter account @AmyEarnhardt to see those personalized Bible verses. You can also search #SteviesVerse.)
Do you have anything “Biblical” in your car? A cross hanging from the rear-view mirror? Like Earnhardt, do you have a meaningful verse taped to your dash? Maybe you have some other type of icon on the car either inside or outside? Perhaps a verse or cross painted on your hog’s gas tank? If not, perhaps you might want to consider doing something like that? Anyway, it is just a thought….
In the Bible, there are verses that speak of “race” and “running.” Believe it or not, the word “highway” shows up over 20 times throughout the Bible.
In the book of Isaiah, an Old Testament prophet, he said there is a voice that cries out “in the wilderness to prepare the way of the Lord, and to make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” Now there is some speculation as to what this means and what exactly Isaiah was trying to say here, but nevertheless, for our purposes, there is the word highway. And it is a straight one at that! Boring, right? Who likes a straight
highway, unless it is a quarter-mile! But for a nice cruise, twisting and turning blacktop, with rolling hills and beautiful scenery, that’s what makes a great highway. Perhaps that’s a metaphor for life? There are times in life when we are to accelerate and there are times to clamp on the ol’ binders. Once in a while we are to steer to the left or right, perhaps go straight, or just simply relax and enjoy the journey.
In 1st Corinthians, the apostle Paul tells us that all of us are running a race, but only one receives the prize. Furthermore, he tells us to run in such a way that we may win. So, run like you mean it. Run as if you are getting the prize. Live out loud. Live without fear. Live without fear that you are running, or had run, in vain (Galatians 2:2). Hold fast to the word of life. Then you will have reason to rejoice because you did not run in vain, nor did you toil in vain (Philippians 2:16). Keep on keeping on. Press hard. Press on toward the goal. Press on toward the prize of the upward and gratifying call of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14).
Retain endurance when things come to entangle us. Let us lay aside every encumbrance, every burden, every sin which wraps us up and chains us down, and let us run the race of life that is in front of us with stamina, fortitude, and strength (Hebrews 12:1).
Then at the end of the race you can say like Timothy did: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, and I have kept the faith” (2nd Timothy 4:7). You have run in such a way that you won. You have exercised self-control in all things. You did not do it to win a perishable

trophy, but rather an imperishable one. You ran in such a way, not without aim, not like simply boxing the air (1st Corinthians 9:24-27). You have done well for your future for there is a “future laid up for you with a crown of righteousness that will be awarded to you on that day” (2nd Timothy 4:8). You have set your eyes upon Jesus, the author of your faith. Because of the joy he had to endure the cross, despising the shame of his cruel and unjust death, he has sat down at the right of God (Hebrews 12:2). He gave his joy and peace to you. All that he did, he did it just for you. So, run your race with no fear, with great joy, with peace in your heart, with gratitude in your thoughts, because the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to the skillful; (Ecclesiastes 9:11-12), but to the one who has faith.
Blessings to you today. May God grant you perseverance to run the race. May you grasp God’s gracious love, mercy, and forgiveness. May you enjoy the race and the finish line. Take care everyone. Keep cruising’. Keep on keeping on.

1954 FORD CRESTLINE SUNLINER

This 1954 Ford Crestline Sunliner is a very special convertible.
Ford made 1500 demonstrator cars for dealers that had a Plexiglass window in the hood for showroom viewing.
It was designed to showcase Ford's new Y-Block, 239 cubic inch OHV V8 that provided 130 horsepower. Potential customers could then marvel at the new engine while taking a look around the car. Small lights were also mounted inside to help illuminate the engine.
Obviously never really intended to be released like this to the general public (it is likely that the hood would be replaced for a standard one when they were eventually being sold off). So, the number of survivors is likely to be extremely low making this a very rare car.

If you wanted a '54 ford Sunliner when they were new it would have cost you $2,164 for the six-cylinder version and a further $76 if you wanted the 239-cubic inch V8. A total of 33,685 Sunliners were sold that year.
The Ford-O-Matic Drive automatic transmission on this car would have cost the original owner a further $184 when they ordered the car new.
Other options on this car include: MagicAire heater and defroster ($70), electric clock ($15) and AM radio ($88).

(MOVIE) This month, Skovy along with members of the James Valley Street Machines went to the Bison 6 Cinema in Jamestown ND and reviewed the movie “Spiderman - Homecoming”.
Peter Parker, with the help of his mentor Tony Stark, tries to balance his life as an ordinary
high school student in New York City while fighting crime as his superhero alter ego Spider-Man when a new threat emerges. Evaluations from members were: “Really liked the humor in the show and the special effects.” “Some “Hokey” spots here and they made it too childish at times.” “Too much jumping around.” “Good entertaining movie. Action filled. Never a dull moment. I would see this movie again.”

The IRS suspected a fishing boat owner wasn't paying proper wages to his Deckhand and sent an agent to investigate him.
IRS AUDITOR: "I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them".
Boat Owner: "Well, there's Clarence, my deckhand, he's been with me for 3 years. I pay him $1,000 a week plus free room and board. Then there's the mentally challenged guy. He works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of the work around here. He makes about
$10 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of Bacardi rum and a dozen Budweiser’s every Saturday night so he can cope with life. He also gets to sleep with my wife occasionally".

NORTH AMERICA’S HOTTEST CAR SHOW/ROD RUN
The 25th Anniversary of Devils Run Car Show/Rod Run, aka North America’s hottest car show, is now written in the car show history books.
We had a record number of cars in attendance with a total of 1,058 entries. People came from AZ, AK, KS, IA, WI, MT, SD, MN, WY and of course ND. Our Canadian friends came from MB, SK and AB. A special honor for us was the 16 vehicles of car friends we have met while wintering in AZ! So neat!! We also had a huge number of first time attendees this year.
The Thursday night “Cruise to Lakota” for a steak fry fundraiser for the Lakota Fire Department was the largest ever. As we were driving down Hwy 2, we looked back to see so many special interest vehicles following us, eighty cars participated in the Rolling Thunder Dinner Cruise. The Fire Department served a total of 331 rib eye steaks and 166 burgers!
On Friday, the Spirit Lake Casino offered a free steak noon meal for all Devils Run participants, as well as a prime rib dinner in the evening. The Muscle Car Show was very well attended, with a $10,000 Poker Run. The burn
outs, balance beam, muffler rapping and flame throwing contests were enjoyed by a large crowd. The skies were dark and eerie looking with bad weather reports for our area, but luckily, we escaped with only a light rain shower that evening.
An outdoor movie was shown later Friday night. The ever popular ‘American Graffiti’ was played to about 100 cars. It rained just before the viewing and then again right after the movie was over! We had lots of good comments about the outdoor fun. Many commented about all the different classic vehicles in the movie.
Saturday morning brought the parade line-up and a pancake/sausage breakfast fundraiser served by the youth of Our Saviors Lutheran Church. The parade began at 9:45 am to get to the downtown area by 10:00. Many first-time participants commented on the large number of people who come out to watch this event.
Roosevelt Park was unbelievably full of cars with parking at a premium! But we got them all settled in to enjoy a BBQ lunch served by the local high school football team as a fundraiser for them. Other concessions were available in the park throughout the event.
The car auction began at 12:00 pm with memorabilia and 42 vehicles on the auction block. Thank you to Randy and Kathy and the crew for all their work on that.
Billy D and the Crystals performed in the Roosevelt Park Band Shell, while the Kiwanis Club served everyone with 1,640
super good grilled steaks!! Those guys do a super job with their fundraiser.
Sunday morning the River of Live church served a pancake and sausage breakfast. The band, Blue English, performed for us from 10:30 to 2:30 at which time our closing ceremonies began.
A large crowd anxiously awaited the drawings for prizes. Stan and Sharon gave away 25 Devils Run jackets with the embroidered 25th Anniversary logo on them.
The Under 21 Event gave away $1500 in Snap-On Tools, cash from Arlynn Hefta and Hearing Aid Company, and Lake Region State College tuition $1,000 scholarships to the
first four winners. NDSRA also gave a plaque to the first-place winner.
To acknowledge 10 years since the beginning of Women’s World, a gift card was given to Tara Rogness by the vendors for her work on that. Congrats Tara.
Other closing prizes were 2 jackets given by Creative Impressions, a jukebox from Rick Lafleur and Company. The Rotary Club also drew for their Indian Motorcycle which was won by Michael Fenner of Kindred ND.
Devils Run was a NDSRA pick site this year. Tom and Jan Tollefson won the NDSRA Devils Run 2017 Pick award which is voted on by the members of NDSRA.
It is hard to believe that 25 years have come and gone so quickly. There are so many people to thank and we can’t do it all here, but just know your work does not

go unnoticed and without gratitude. So, thank you, thank you, thank you all!!

1951 PONTIAC CHIEFTAIN DELUXE

The year was 1951 and it was Pontiac's Silver Anniversary. However, despite the big occasion their cars were given just a minor revamp.
It was also the year that Pontiac produced their four-millionth car.
The Deluxe Convertible was the most expensive car in Pontiac's Chieftain lineup for 1951.
Rear view
Under the hood there is a straight eight "Silver Streak" engine that provides 116 horsepower. This was up 8 horsepower from the previous year. It came standard with a 3-speed manual transmission although the original owner of this Chieftain opted for a Hydra-Matic automatic transmission costing $170 extra.

Pontiacs fitted with an Eight were referred to a Series 27 whereas the sixes were Series 25. Chieftain was considered a car line and not a series.
Production figures are difficult to pin down by model as Pontiac only kept these numbers by engine and transmission. They produced a total of 370,159 cars with 251,987 of these were Eight cylinder with Hydra-Matic transmission. Convertible production would have been just a fraction of that number. Pontiac built 6.7 of America's convertibles during the 1951 model year.
Back in 1951 a Pontiac Chieftain Deluxe Convertible would have cost you $2388 for the eight-cylinder model. If you wanted a six then they came in at $74 less.

It wouldn’t be a stretch to call the Pontiac Trans Am the “last muscle car standing” by the time the 1975 models showed up.
Only the ’75 Corvette, with a modest 205 hp in its top engine option, eclipsed the T/A when it came to go power.
Sure, those numbers are laughable today, but in an era, bereft of memorable cars, the 1975 Trans Am still looked cool, rode and handled great, and was simply a darn nice machine.
“It definitely has good get-up and go and it handles real nice,” says David Brierley of Amherst, Wis., who received the keys to his father’s 1975 T/A about seven years ago. “It’s got the cushy seats and radial tuned suspension and everything. It’s really comfortable, and it’s fun.”
Adrian Brierley bought the Trans Am used in “either 1976 or ’77”, according to his son, and used it as his daily driver year-round in Wisconsin for most of the next decade. “I guess he just thought it was a cool car,” David says. “He bought it from the original owner… He actually used it as his everyday car for quite a few years. I definitely remember it. I remember I couldn’t even see over the dash I was so little. He used to have lambskin seat covers on it.
“[Eventually] it started to get a little rough, so he had the body and paint redone sometime in the ’80s.”
When David was a senior in college in 2010, his father sprung
a surprise on him. “He took me out in the shed and handed me the keys and said, ‘It’s yours.’ I thought maybe I’d buy it off him someday, but it was a total surprise.”
The elder Brierley was originally from England and had made the decision to return to his homeland and didn’t want to take the car with him. “And I think a lot of it was he was diagnosed with MS at about that time, so the left side of his body was kind of a little weaker. I think shifting and driving it was getting more difficult, and he just didn’t have the time to tinker with it and give it the care that it needed.”
The car has only about 73,000 miles on the odometer after David has added a few over the past seven years. Aside from the second coat of paint, the Pontiac is in splendid original condition. “I think he just had some rust behind the doors worked on. He had a few spots patched up, and then had the whole thing repainted and new decals,” Briefly said. “Then sometime after that the hood was actually stolen when he was in Green Bay. to pop the hood, so I guess somebody just opened the hood, took off the bolts and took off with it. He was just parked somewhere in a parking lot … So, it’s on its second hood.”
Staying alive in ’75
The Firebird lineup did its best to carry the performance torch through much of the ’70s, soldiering on even as its Camaro and Corvette brethren were dragged into the slow lane by government regulations, high insurance costs and inflated gas prices. The Corvette could still be had with a 350-cid V-8 rated at 205 if you checked the L82 option box. The Trans Am’s 400-cid V-8 was next at 185 hp. Later in the 1975 production run, the 455-cid V-8 was reinstated, but with single exhaust and a catalytic converter. Due to decreased horsepower, the M38 Turbo Hydra-Matic was the only automatic used (a manual transmission was also available). All Firebirds certified for sale in California were required to use this transmission.
Model year production included 22,293 Firebirds; 20,826 Espirits; 13,670 Formula Firebirds; and 27,274 Trans Am’s. Only 8,314 Firebirds were built with the inline six-cylinder engine. Most (26,417) Trans Am’s had the 400-cid 185-hp L78 four-barrel V-8. Only 857 T/As were built with the 455-cid 200-hp L75 four-barrel V-8. Road testers found
the 1975 Trans Am with the L78 drive train capable of 0-to-60 mph in 9.8 seconds and the quarter-mile in 16.8 seconds.
Firebird sales picked up in 1975, although the cars continued to look much the same as before. The same low, racy body style that had been unveiled in 1970 was still being used throughout the Firebird lineup. The biggest update was a new rear window that wrapped around the corners of the roof to give the driver improved vision. GM’s HEI electronic ignition system was added to the equipment list along with a radial tuned suspension system. The base Firebirds were the plainest-looking and had visible windshield wipers. Espirits had concealed wipers, dressy moldings, body-color door handle inserts and chrome “Esprit” signatures on the roof. Formulas were ready for street action with their heavy-duty underpinnings and dual hood scoops. The Trans Am kept its sports-car racing look with bolt-on flares, spoilers, engine air extractors, shaker hood scoop and “screaming
chicken” decals. It all added up to
a window price of $4,740 for the top-of-the-food-chain T/A.

blue decals and all-red interior with vinyl bucket seats in front. The 400-cid 6.6-liter engine is mated to a Hurst four-speed manual shifter. “It doesn’t have air conditioning, but it does have power steering,” he says. “And it’s got the AM/FM radio.”
Briefly jokes that he’s a Ford fan who just happened to wind up with a Poncho with a lot of appeal and sentimental value. He bought a 1968 Mustang coupe project car before he was old enough to drive, and he’s still working to get it finished. “I’m really more of a Ford guy. This is my one exception to the rule,” he says. “I guess my plan is to slowly get it back closer to showroom condition. It’s never going to be perfect because I drive it, but I’ll keep doing things as I have the time and money. I had the carburetor rebuilt, and that made a big difference. And I had the transmission rebuilt. I’d like to have the paint touched up at some point; it’s got a few nicks. Eventually I want to have the engine detailed and have it looking a little more perfect. One thing I almost don’t want to do is restore it too perfectly, because then I wouldn’t want to drive it.”
It was never going to bring home any trophies at the drag strip, but the 1975 Trans Am is probably owed a debt of gratitude from the collector car world. Other muscle machines died all around it, but the T/A was simply too nice of a
car, and too popular to euthanize. Even during its tamest days, the “Screaming Chicken” was a mighty nice car.
“People still love it. Just driving it down the street, you see people wave or stop and stare and watch you go by,” Brierley concludes. “A lot of people want to talk about it. You get a lot of people who have stories, like, ‘I had one of these and wrapped it around a tree,’ or whatever. It’s a fun car to talk about. It’s just a cool car.”
