also executive producer of This Is Our City, a multiyear project
featuring documentary video, reporting and essays about Christians
seeking the f lourishing of their cities. He also sits on the editorial
board for Books & Culture .
power: gift or curse?
Power corrupts—as we’ve seen time
and time again. Yet power is also the
means by which we bring life, create
possibilities, offer hope and make
human f lourishing possible. This is
“playing god” as it is meant to be.
If we are to do God’s work—fight
injustice, bring peace, create beauty
and allow the image of God to thrive
in those around us—how are we to do
these things if not by power?
With Playing God , Andy Crouch opens
the subject of power, elucidating its
subtle activity in our relationships and
institutions. He gives us much more
than a warning against abuse, though.
Turning the notion of “playing god”
on its head, Crouch celebrates power
as the gift by which we join in God’s
creative, redeeming work in the world.

ANdy CrouCh oN Power
“Power at its worst should unset-
tle us, should shock us. But power
at its best is . . . the current of life.
It is dangerously good.”
“Here is what we need to discover
about power: it is both better and
worse than we could imagine.”
“Absolute love transfigures abso-
lute power. And power transfig-
ured by love is the power that
made and saves the world.”
“The worst fate one could wish
for would be to end up alone with
one’s power, for then there would
be no one left with whom onecould tend and shape the world.”
“Power is a gift. That is this
book’s central, controversial idea.”
PrAise for PLaying god
“Perhaps no question with such urgent
life-and-death consequences is more
poorly understood among Christians in
our era than the stewardship of power;but gloriously, in Playing God,
Andy Crouch provides the clarity we
need in this once-in-a-generation work
of sweeping theological and sociological
depth. It is fresh, rigorous, profoundly
helpful and a delight to read.”
—Gary A. Haugen, president & CEO,
International Justice Mission
“Once again, Andy Crouch cuts to the
heart of the matter by challenging us
to take seriously the One whose image
we bear. Playing God is a clear and compelling call for Christians to
steward the kind of power that enables
flourishing .”

hold it all together
Rich Nathan is senior pastor of Vineyard Columbus and has served
on the Vineyard’s national board for nearly two decades. A popular
national and international conference speaker, Rich also wrote Who
is My Enemy? Welcoming People the Church Rejects .
Insoo Kim serves as the pastor of ministry strategies at Vineyard
Columbus. He is also the director of the Church Planting Residency
Program, which exists to launch new church plants from Vineyard
Columbus.
It’s an either-or world. We find
ourselves caught between competing
factions, secular or religious, conserva-
tive or liberal. We are pulled between
extremes on one side or the other.
Rich Nathan and Insoo Kim show
how Christians can live out the full-
ness of the gospel through the both-
and. They affirm that we believe in
both proclamation and demonstration
of the gospel, justice and mercy, and
unity and diversity as one body with
many parts. The answer is not to
choose one or the other, but to hold
both together for a richer, more holis-
tic experience of Christianity. Then we
will live into the realities of the king-
dom of God, both now and not yet,
on earth as it is in heaven.

AN exCerPT from Both-anD
“The world is becoming more
polarized and less civil at the
same time. That’s a potent
and dangerous combination!Whether it regards politics,
education or healthcare reform,
people on opposite ends of
the ideological spectrum are
screaming louder and listen-
ing less, and the great divide
between them widens and deep-
ens with each passing day. . . . It
is too easy for us as Christians
to hide in the safety of our
church buildings and point
fingers at people in the world
for their great polarizations and
incivility. It is painfully obvious
that even within the church,
however, a great chasm divides
the followers of Jesus.”
PrAise for Both-anD
“Too many of us have a gospel with a
hole in it, or as pastors Rich Nathan
and Insoo Kim write, we have an
‘either-or’ gospel. I’m so thankful for Rich, Insoo and Vineyard Columbus
for giving us a living example of a
church that is out to set the gospel free.
Be warned: following their wisdom will
turn you into a radical disciple of Jesus
Christ!”
—Richard Stearns, president of
World Vision US and author of
Unfinished: Believing Is Only the Beginning
“In our polarized world, and in an
equally polarized church, Rich Nathanand Insoo Kim’s book, Both-And , is
a breath of fresh air. Both-And calls
readers to embrace a powerful, compel-
ling and holistic Christian faith. This is
a hopeful, practical and inspiring look
at what Christianity is meant to be.”
