TIDBITS® BRINGS YOU A
JANUARY JUMBLEby Kathy Wolfe
Say “Welcome” to the new year by learning a little about some January commemorations you might not be familiar with. This week, Tidbits looks a few lesser-known celebrations. • January 7 is Harlem Globetrotters’ Day, remembering
the first game the famous basketball team played on that day in 1927. They traveled 48 miles west from their Chicago home to play a game in Hinckley, Illinois. The team was the brainstorm of Chicago businessman Abe Saperstein during a time when only whites were permitted to play professional basketball. The team had nothing to do with the New York City borough of Harlem. Abe chose the name to emphasize the team’s ethnic heritage. The Globetrotters didn’t even play their first game in Harlem until the late 1960s! Since their creation, they have played in front of 120 million fans in more than 115 countries.
• January 10 is Save the Eagles Day, reminding us of the importance of protecting the world’s 70 species of eagles from extinction. Eagles can be found on every continent except Antarctica. America’s national

JANUARY JUMBLE (continued): emblem, the bald eagle, inhabits every state except
Hawaii. This enormous bird can have a wing span of up to 8 feet (2.5 m) and weigh 15 lbs. (6.8 kg). Surprisingly, it is monogamous and mates for its entire 15- to 20-year lifespan.• January 11 is officially Amelia Earhart Day, but not because that was the day she disappeared. It marks the date she became the first person to fly solo across the Pacific from Honolulu to Oakland, California in 1935. It was two years later on June 1 that she and her navigator Fred Noonan departed Miami on a 29,000-mile (46,671 km) journey, attempting to fly around the world. They were just 7,000 miles (11,265 km) from completing the goal when radio transmission ceased and the two were never seen again.
• The name Margaret Gorman is probably not familiar to most folks, but she is notable as the first Miss America, winner of the pageant in 1920. Originally initiated as a local Atlantic City festival in an attempt to extend the tourism season past Labor Day, the event became was not known as the Miss America Pageant until 1922. Miss America Day is now in January each year, with the next pageant scheduled for January 12, 2013. It was broadcast for the first time in 1954, with a record-breaking 27 million viewers, and remains the fourth longest-running live event in television history. The state of California has had the most winners with six, while 21 states, including Washington, Idaho, Maine, Nevada, and Montana, have never had a Miss America hail from their state.
• Happy Cable Car Day on January 17! This year marks the 142nd anniversary of the first cable car railway patent bestowed upon Andrew Smith Hallidie. He was inspired to invent the cable car after witnessing an accident with a horse-drawn streetcar on San Francisco’s steep streets. The cable car made its first appearance in that city in 1873. The cars move up and down San Francisco’s inclines at a speed of about 9 miles per hour (14.5 km/hr).
• Who hasn’t used that handy little tool, the Thesaurus? It’s the volume that lists synonyms for words, enabling a writer to avoid using the same word in articles, speeches, and papers. January 18th is officially Thesaurus Day, celebrating the 1779 birthday of the author of Roget’s Thesaurus, Peter Roget. He was a British physician who struggled with depression and used the compiling of lists of words to combat it. The brilliant Roget graduated with a medical degree at only 19, and served as chief surgeon of an English hospital. In addition, he invented a slide rule that enables a person to

Compassion, Joy and Love for a Lifetime
An unlikely friendship started on a cold winter night with a soft meowing at our back door. A little bedraggled orphan kitten was huddled in a corner, afraid of the world and all the strange noises of a wintery night. I called out, “Who’s there?” and a little “meow” was the answer. A cold little kitten emerged and came running over to me. At first I did not know what to think but I instinctually picked up the kitten and hugged it. Going into the kitchen I found a cozy corner, a warm blanket and a cardboard box bed for my new pal. Searching my refrigerator I found some chicken and tuna pieces that became the kitten’s first meal. The starved kitten ate the food ravenously and then went over to his bed and fell asleep.A name? What to call the little fellow . . . Herbie! The kitten would grow up and help me in the garden. It seems like only yesterday but that kitten has become my life-long companion sharing unconditional love and the joy of gardening. Happy New Year ten years later. Me and my pal, Herbie, are looking forward to another great year ahead. Meows, Hugs, Purrs and Love . . . my cat has been the best friend I ever had. This was a touching holiday note sent to Dr. Jim Olson in a Christmas card.

Bloodstone
By its name you would think it would be red, but instead bloodstone is green jasper speckled with bright red spots of iron oxide. It is often referred to as the martyr’s gem because medieval Christians would carve scenes of the crucixion and of martyrs on bloodstone. An ancient Christian legend held that bloodstone was formed when the blood of Christ fell from his hands, feet, and side and stained some jasper that was at the foot of the cross. In ancient times, bloodstone was thought to be able to stop hemorrhages with only a touch. Some think it relieves stomach and bowel pain and strengthens the blood purify-ing organs and improves blood circulation. Bloodstone is also supposed to have a posi-tive inuence on a bladder. Today in India nely pulverized bloodstone is used as a medication and aphrodisiac. It is mined in Brazil, China, India, Australia, and the United States (Wyoming). Quality specimens of bloodstone are not easy to nd though it remains a quite aordable stone

THIS IS A HAMMERBy Samantha Mazzotta
Hanging Pictures in Concrete Basement
Q: I have a dry basement that I turned into an extra workspace and play area. The outer concrete walls are covered by a layer of wallboard with little or no space between. I’d like to hang pictures and a white-board in this area, but I am afraid of drilling through the concrete. How can I accomplish this? -- Beth Y.,
Pittsburgh
A: Drilling into concrete isn’t impossible -- special masonry drill bits are available -- but you’re right to be cautious about drilling holes in the walls of a dry basement. However, you do have options outside of
drilling into the mortar.Light objects that won’t bear extra weight can be at-tached to the wall using an adhesive product like the Command series of picture hangers. These have the
added benefit of not marring the wallboard even when the adhesive is removed later. They’re available at
home-improvement and office-supply stores. For a more secure attachment, place small picture-hanger hooks into the wallboard using the smallest nails available. The items being hung should be less than 5 pounds and not hold any extra weight -- so a
shelf or a cork board laden with notes might not hold up.
For heavier objects, or if you want shelving near your workspace, you’ll have to get more creative. If there is a little space between the wallboard and the concrete, you can drill a hole and place expansion bolts, which pop open behind the wallboard to keep the bolts in place. Toggle (or Molly) bolts will work if there is
about an inch of space between the concrete and the drywall.
Because the bolts are not anchored in studs, you should brace the shelf or picture with extra expansion bolts on the bottom, and limit the load to less than 50 pounds. In fact, if you’re planning to add shelving to hold books, consider using a freestanding bookshelf
instead of a weight-bearing wall shelf.Another option for heavier items is suspending them from the ceiling. Try locating the ceiling’s framing
material or the floor joists using a stud finder, and drill sturdy bolts or hooks into the joists.
HOME TIP: Even “dry” basements can have high humidity or be vulnerable to seepage through the ma-sonry foundation, so consider using a dehumidifier to
improve air quality.

perform exponential and root calculations. His first Thesaurus was published when Roget was 73, and was entitled Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases Classified and Arranged so as to Facilitate the Expression of Ideas and Assist in Literary Composition. His work had 28 printings during his lifetime, and after his death, was carried on by his son and later by his grandson.
• Sharpen your pencils! It’s time for National Handwriting Day on January 23, a day established by the Writing Instrument Manufacturers Association to promote the use of pens, pencils, and writing paper. This day was chosen because it is the birthday of John Hancock, whose stylish and flamboyant signature is easily recognizable on the Declaration of Independence. Even his name has become synonymous with the word “signature,” as we ask folks to “put their John Hancock” on important documents. This member of the Continental Congress and later governor of Massachusetts was the very first person to sign the Declaration.
• Make yourself a peanut butter sandwich on January 24 in honor of National Peanut Butter Day. Every year Americans eat enough of this spread to make more than 10 billion sandwiches, spending about $800 million annually. First introduced in 1904 at the St. Louis World’s Fair, peanut butter is now eaten in 90% of American households. Today’s laws state that in order to be labeled as “peanut butter,” the product must be at least 90% peanuts.
• January 25 is observed as World Leprosy Day, intended to educate people on this disease that damages the nerves that control the muscles in the hands and feet. Left untreated, it can lead to the inability to use the hands, paralysis of the feet, loss of sensation in the extremities, and even blindness. Every day, 620 people are diagnosed with leprosy – that’s one every two minutes! Also called Hansen’s Disease, leprosy is contagious, spread by droplets from the nose and mouth by coughing and sneezing. India has more leprosy than any other country. The good news in this century is that it is curable, and deformities can frequently be remedied with reconstructive surgery.
• Seeing Eye Dogs, who help their sight-impaired owners to safely navigate in their surroundings, are honored on January 29. The top three breeds used as guide dogs today are Labradors, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds. A dog undergoes specialized training for four to six months to make sure they have the necessary qualifications to be a seeing eye dog.

Investing is a Marathon -- Not a Sprint Investors sometimes may get frustrated with their investments because those investments don’t seem
to produce quick results. Per-haps that’s understandable in our fast-paced society, in which we’ve grown accustomed to in-stant gratification. But investing is, by nature, a long-term activ-ity. If you look at it in terms of an athletic event, it’s not a sprint, in which you must pull out all the stops to quickly get where you’re going. Instead, it’s
more like the 26.2-mile race known as a marathon.
And as an investor, you can learn a few things from marathoners, such as:
Preparation — No one gets up one day and is ready to run a marathon. Marathon runners train for months, and even years. As an investor, you, too, need to prepare yourself for the “long run.” How? By learning as much as you can about different asset classes, types of risk and all the other factors associ-ated with investing. Patience — Marathoners know they have a long haul in front of them, so they typically create a “game plan” — one that takes into account such factors as their physical condition, the weather on race day and the characteristics of the course, such as whether it’s hilly or flat. Investors should also create a strategy — one that encompasses their goals and ways of working toward them — and stick to this strategy. Perseverance — Marathoners may deal with injuries, dehydration and other setbacks, either while training or during the actual race. But as long as they’re able to keep going, they do so. As an investor, you too will face obstacles, such as market downturns. But as long as you continue investing and don’t head to the “sidelines,” you have a good chance of making progress toward your goals. Vision — Marathoners study the course they’re on, so they know what’s ahead — and where they’re going. As an investor, you also need a vision of what lies in front of you — the number of years until your retirement, the type of retirement life-style you anticipate, what sort of legacy you plan to leave, and so on. Your vision will help drive your investment decisions. Proper coaching — Not all marathoners have individual coaches, but many have at least gone to clinics or joined running clubs so they could learn more about the various aspects of this grueling event. As an investor, you can certainly benefit from guidance or “coaching” in the form of a financial professional — someone who knows your indi-vidual needs, goals and risk tolerance, and who has the experience to make recommendations that are appropriate for your situation.
Every marathoner is familiar with the difficulties of the challenge and the satisfaction of finishing the race. As an investor, you also will be tested many times. Furthermore, you’ll never really cross the “finish line” because you’ll always have goals toward which you’ll be working. Yet, by emulating the traits of successful marathoners, you can contin-ue working toward your objectives — and perhaps you’ll avoid the blisters, too.

¥ On Feb. 1, 1884, the first portion of the Oxford English Dictionary is published. In 1857, mem-bers of London’s Philological Society decided to produce a dictionary that would cover all vocabu-lary from 1150 A.D. to the present. It took more than 40 years to complete.
¥ On Jan. 28, 1915, the captain of a German cruis-er orders the destruction of the William P. Frye, an American merchant ship off the Brazilian coast. He had ordered the Frye to jettison its cargo as contraband, but the ship’s crew refused. It was the first American merchant vessel lost to Germany’s aggression during World War I.
¥ On Jan. 29, 1922, in the middle of a film, the Knickerbocker Theatre in Washington, D.C., col-lapses, killing 108 people and sending another 133 to the hospital. Accumulated snowfall from a blizzard collapsed the theater’s roof, which fell down on top of theatergoers.
¥ On Jan. 30, 1933, President Paul von Hinden-burg names Adolf Hitler -- fuhrer (leader) of the National Socialist German Workers Party (or Nazi Party) -- as chancellor of Germany. Hitler’s mete-oric rise to prominence in Germany was spurred largely by the German people’s frustration with dismal economic conditions.
¥ On Feb. 3, 1950, Klaus Fuchs, a German-born British scientist who helped developed the atomic bomb, is arrested in Great Britain for passing top-secret information about the bomb to the Soviet Union. SELLING DOUGLAS & ELBERT COUNTIES
TWO OF THE YEAR'S BEST COMEBACK RE-SPONSES
Number 1:
If you ever testify in court, you might wish you could have been as sharp as this policeman.
He was being cross-examined by a defense attor-ney during a felony trial. The lawyer was trying to undermine the police officer's credibility .....
Q: 'Officer --- did you see my client fleeing the scene?'
A: 'No sir. But I subsequently observed a person matching the description of the offender, running several blocks away.'
Q: 'Officer, who provided this description?'
A: 'The officer who responded to the scene.'
Q: 'A fellow officer provided the description of this so-called offender. Do you trust your fellow offic-ers?'
A: 'Yes, sir. With my life.'
Q: 'With your life? Let me ask you this then officer. Do you have a room where you change your clothes in preparation for your daily duties?'
A: 'Yes sir, we do!'
Q: 'And do you have a locker in the room?'
A: 'Yes, sir, I do.'
Q: 'And do you have a lock on your locker?'
A: 'Yes, sir.'
Q: 'Now, why is it, officer, if you trust your fellow officers with your life, you find it necessary to lock your locker in a room you share with these same officers?'
A: 'You see, sir, we share the building with the court complex, and sometimes lawyers have been known to walk through that room.'
The courtroom EXPLODED with laughter, and a prompt recess was called. The officer on the stand has been nominated for this year's 'Best Comeback' line -- and we think he'll win.
Number 2:
Now We Know Why He Was a General -----
In an recent interview, General Norman Schwarz-kopf was asked if he thought there was room for forgiveness toward the people who have harbored and abetted the terrorists who perpetrated the 9/11 attacks on America.
His answer was classic Schwarzkopf.
The General said, "I believe that forgiving them is God's function... OUR job is to arrange the meet-ing."
