"To Sleep, Perchance To Dream-Ay, There's The Rub."By Dr. Greg Fors, DC / Board-certifi ed Neurologist

Many Americans no longer enjoy the pleasure of sleep. The National Institute of Health (NIH) estimates more than 70 million Americans are affected by sleep problems, and a new class of sleep drugs called sedative/hypnotics, such as Ambien, Lunesta and Sonata has taken America by storm. These drugs were originally designed for short term use only, no more than 1 to 2 weeks. In just four years (2000 to 2004) the use of sleep medications doubled among adults age 24 to 44 and increased by 85% for children aged 10 to 19. A recent study fi nanced by the NIH found that sleeping pills like Ambien, Lunesta and Sonata only reduced the time it took to fall asleep by 13 minutes and increased the total sleep time by 11 minutes when compared to a placebo. Individuals in the study thought they had slept 32 minutes longer than they actually had because of a drug induced anterograde amnesia. In other words when people wake up after taking sleeping pills they simply forget they are unable to sleep. Americans now spend more than $5 billion a year on drugs to help them forget they are unable to sleep restfully. The most commonly reported problems with sleep hypnotics like Ambien include daytime drowsiness, diarrhea, and coordination problems. These medications work as a central nervous system depressant leading to decreased inhibition causing aggressiveness, agitation, bizarre behavior and depolarization in some individuals. Visual and auditory hallucinations have also been reported. There have been numerous reports of people taking these medications and driving their cars, preparing and eating food, making phone calls and having sex while not fully awake and having no memory of the event. Ambien actually now ranks among the top 10 drugs found in the bloodstreams of impaired drivers. Using these sleep hypnotics like Ambien for more than 7 to 14 days can cause a chronic sleeplessness that is actually worse than the original insomnia. Use of these sleep medications for more than four weeks can damage to the stages of sleep as well as cause addiction, actual physical dependence and withdrawal once you stop taking them. Also these sleep hypnotics like Ambien slow down your brain's activity. When you stop taking Ambien, activity in the brain can rebound out of control and actually cause seizures. This is why it is important to seek medical help when you stop taking drugs like Ambien. So why do Americans continue to take these addictive damaging drugs?, no doubt because everyone treasures a peaceful restful sleep. What is puzzling to me as a doctor is why no one asks the question why am I not sleeping? The simple answer is that it takes a healthy brain to generate a healthy sleep! It is specifi c areas of your brain that produce the cycles of sleep just like there are areas of the brain that generates a peaceful and happy mood. If the brain is lacking needed nutrients or if something is causing metabolic damage to optimal brain function this will lead to sleep and mood disorders. To actually have restful sleep again you must look to optimizing your brain health. We can now see that drugs do not heal this problem they simply create more complex health issues. A better choice is to address the underlying nutritional and metabolic issues. There can be food allergies, toxic chemicals and toxic metals in your environment that need to be identifi ed and removed. Usually there are decreased levels and/or genetically an increased need for various nutrients: e.g. vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, and essential fatty acids that must be restored, to assist in repair of the metabolic dysfunction related to sleep disorders. It is also vital to test for and treat any hormonal imbalances such as adrenal dysfunction and high nighttime cortisol levels. Added to this proper dosage of melatonin and specifi c herbal extracts utilized by a knowledgeable doctor can help restore restful sleep, naturally! Want to know more, attend my FREE SEMINAR! ● On June 30, 1859, Jean-Francois Gravelet, a Frenchman known professionally as Emile Blondin, becomes the fi rst daredevil to walk across Niagara Falls on a tightrope. Wearing pink tights and a yellow tunic, Blondin crossed a cable about 2 inches in diameter and 1,100-feet long with only a balancing pole to protect him from plunging into the dangerous rapids 160 feet below.

● On June 27, 1985, after 59 years, the iconic Route 66 between Chicago and Los Angeles enters the realm of history when the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Offi cials

decertifi es the road and votes to remove all its highway signs. Most of Route 66 followed a path forged through the wilderness in 1857 by U.S. Navy Lt. Edward Beale at the head of a caravan of camels.

● On July 8, 1776, a 2,000-pound copper-and-tin bell now known as the “Liberty Bell” rings out from the tower of the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, summoning citizens to the fi rst public reading of the Declaration of Independence. As the British advanced toward Philadelphia in the fall of 1777, the bell was removed from the city and hidden in Allentown to save it from being melted down by the British and used to make cannons.

● On July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the second and third presidents

of the United States, respectively, die. Both men had been central in the drafting of the historic document.

● On July 5, 1865, in London, revivalist preacher William Booth and his wife Catherine establish the Christian Mission, later known as the Salvation Army, to wage war against the evils of poverty and religious indifference.

● On July 7, 1930, construction of the Hoover Dam begins. Over the next fi ve years, a total of 21,000 men would produce what would be the largest dam of its time. Today, the Hoover Dam generates enough energy each year to serve more than a million people.

● On July 9, 1947, in a ceremony held at the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower appoints Florence Blanchfi eld to be a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, making her the fi rst woman in U.S. history to hold permanent

military rank. Blanchfi eld had served as superintendent of the Army Nurse Corps during World War II.

● On July 6, 1957, Liverpool teenagers John Lennon and Paul McCartney meet for the fi rst time. Lennon was a member of the Quarry Men, scheduled to play at a public event. Two weeks later, Lennon invited McCartney to join the Quarry Men.

● On July 10, 1962, the United States Patent Offi ce issues Swedish engineer Nils Bohlin a patent for his three-point automobile safety belt. The traditional two-point belt had been known to cause severe internal abdominal injuries in the event of a high-speed crash.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:PAUL ORFALEA

Paul Orfalea counts his learning problems as “the blessings that allowed him to see the world differently from his peers.” Nicknamed “Kinko” because of his curly red hair, he is an extraordinary entrepreneur. • Orfalea was a child who couldn’t sit still in the classroom. He couldn’t read; he was restless, wiggling all of the time while his mind raced. When he was in school in the 1960s, dyslexia and ADHD (attention defi cit hyperactivity disorder) were not recognized or dealt with as they are today. Educators didn’t always know what to do with children who had the undiagnosed “differences.”• Dyslexia is a neurological condition that affects language processing. People with the condition have a hard time recognizing and decoding words. Reading comprehension and even pronunciation skills are usually lacking. With ADHD, restlessness coupled with impulsivity, frustration, diffi culty organizing and completing tasks can lead to behavioral problems in classroom settings. Orfalea fl unked two grades in school and was expelled from several schools. He did graduate from high school but was a D- student at the bottom of his class.• In Orfalea’s words, he “had supportive parents, and that made all the difference. I was a sensitive kid. I could have easily fallen through the cracks.” He, like many with similar learning diffi culties, had the creative thinking, curiosity, adventurous spirit and boldness to pursue an unusual endeavor.

• While Orfalea was a student at the University of Southern California, he realized that photocopiers were a need for students and were not easily accessible. • In 1970, Orfalea borrowed $5,000 from a local bank, rented a small store-front next to a hamburger stand in Isla Vista, close to the University of California, Santa Barbara, and opened the fi rst Kinko’s Copy Center. He also spent time on the sidewalk in front of the store selling pens and pencils from his backpack and encouraged passersby to give his store a try. The tiny store featured one copy machine selling copies at 2.5¢ each, an offset press, fi lm processing and school supplies.• Orfalea saw a need, zeroed in on it and created a company that eventually grew to more than 1,200 locations and 23,000 employees in 10 different countries.• Orfalea attributed the success of his company to the creation of a working environment where employees loved coming to work. The achievement that really made him proud was having Kinko’s named one of the best places to work in America by FORTUNE magazine three years in a row. • Kinko’s was acquired by FedEx Corporation (Federal Express) in February 2004, and the company was called FedEx Kinko’s. In 2008, Kinko’s was dropped from the name, and it was changed to FedEx Offi ce. • Even though Orfalea has never learned to enjoy reading, there are several books about his success. His autobiography “Copy This!” was published in 2005; “The Entrepreneurial Investor,” about investing, came out in 2008; and the latest book, “Two Billion Dollars in Nickels: Refl ections on the Entrepreneurial Life,” became available in February 2009. All three books tell his amazing story of rising above his learning differences to achieve success.

GOOD HOUSEKEEPING TWO Fontina and Pepper Pizza

When cooked on the grill, homemade pizza becomes a gourmet affair. Add roasted peppers and fresh herbs to the mix, and you’ve got dinner suitable for company.1 pound fresh pizza dough / 6 ounces Italian Fontina or Provolone cheese, shredded. 2 jarred roasted red and/

or yellow peppers, thinly sliced / 1 tablespoon chopped fresh marjoram or thyme leaves

1. Prepare outdoor grill for covered, direct grilling on medium-low.2. Cut dough into 4 equal pieces. On one end of oiled cookie sheet, with fi ngertips, spread and fl atten 1 piece of dough to about 1/8-inch thickness. (Edge does not

need to be even.) On same cookie sheet, repeat with another piece of dough. Repeat with a second oiled cookie sheet and remaining dough.3. Place all 4 pieces of dough, oiled side down, on hot grill grate. Cook 2 to 3 minutes or until grill marks appear on underside (dough will stiffen and puff).4. With tongs, turn crusts over. Working quickly, arrange one-fourth of Fontina and one-fourth of

peppers on each crust. Cover grill and cook pizzas 3 to 4 minutes longer or until undersides are evenly browned and cooked through.5. Transfer to cutting board; sprinkle with marjoram. Cut into wedges. Serves 4.

Tip: Look for fresh pizza dough in the dairy section of your supermarket, usually sold near the tortillas. (Frozen pizza dough also is available, but it takes several hours to thaw before it can be used.) Or you can purchase dough from a local pizzeria; they’ll usually sell it to you in 1-pound balls if you ask. Each serving: About 465 calories, 18g total fat (9g saturated), 49mg cholesterol, 640mg sodium, 57g total carbs, 3g dietary fi ber, 18g protein. SALTWATER (continued)

• Major oil and gas production takes place along the edges of the Caspian Sea. In addition, caviar harvested from the lake’s sturgeon, which are large ancient-looking fi sh with large mouths and no scales, is a major commodity. There are three types of sturgeon in the region: the Beluga, Russian Sturgeon and the Stellate Sturgeon. The Beluga is the largest member of the Sturgeon family, sometimes exceeding 14 feet (4.3 m) and weighing in excess of 2,000 pounds (907 kg). • The Caspian and Dead Seas both have areas of sandy beaches and popular tourist resorts built along the banks. The Great Salt Lake has two parks, Antelope Island State Park and Great Salt Lake State Park, that are popular places to

boat, swim and enjoy nature. • A large resort, the Saltaire Pavilion, was built along the southern shore of the Great Salt Lake in 1893 as a joint effort of the Salt Lake and Los Angeles Railroad Company and the Mormon Church. The resort was built on 2,000 pylons driven into the shore of the lakebed, had a long bridge leading out to the water for swimming and lounging. It became known as the western “Coney Island.”• Accidental fi res in 1925 and 1931 and an arson fi re in the 1970s at Saltaire have made the location famous more for its history than its tourist appeal. The Saltaire boasted the largest dance fl oor in the world after the rebuilding from the fi rst fi re. New investors reopened the venue for music events in 1983.

• When we think of life in bodies of saltwater, we often think of whales and sharks, but many other odd and interesting creatures call saltwater home. The largest living crocodilians on earth are saltwater crocodiles, called “salties” by Australians. Average males are 17 feet (5 m) long and 1,000 pounds (450 kg). It is not uncommon for them to be as long as 23 feet (7 m) and 2,200 pounds (1,000 kg). The range of “salties” is Eastern India, Southeast Asia and Northern Australia, so we don’t have to be worried about them in North America.• A bizarre family of fi sh called white-blooded or crocodile icefi sh are found in the cold salty waters of Antarctica and southern South America. Lacking red blood cells in their bodies, these fi sh are pale, have long snouts, wide mouths and large teeth — hence,

their name. Their blood carries less oxygen than the red blood cells of other fi sh. Because of this, icefi sh have oversized hearts that pump large volumes of blood at low pressures. • You can bring some of this life into your home or offi ce with a saltwater aquarium. Fill it with colorful fi sh, sea anemones, jellyfi sh and other creatures to mimic the abundance of the oceans and seas. • Now, to end this Tidbits on a sweet note. Saltwater taffy is a treat found in many stores, fairs and amusement parks. Is it made from saltwater? No. The most popular story is that a shopkeeper in Atlantic City, New Jersey, gave it the “saltwater” name after his shop was fl ooded by a tidal surge.

MIGHTY MINNESOTANS Alexander Ramsey : elected 2nd governor of Minnesota in 1860 he accomlished a 36% reduction in state spending within 1 year, and whenever possible marched against the succession of the south. When on a vist to Washington he heard about the attack on Fort Sumpter and hastened to the Secretary of War to pledged 1000 men to defend the Union making Minnesota to first state to offer voluntereers. In the Souix uprising of 1862 he put a friend Henry Sibley, also the man he defeated for governorship, in charge of the military forces used to put it down.

Tidbit'ing Your Golf Game (Pitching) One of the causes of skulled or fat pitch shots is being too loose with your wrists. A good pitch shot technique should have little wrist movement as the club is swung. Set up your weight on your front foot and your hands well ahead of the ball. As you swing, let your hands stay ahead of the ball and finish with the club pointing directly at your target. Trust the club to get the ball up and on it’s way to the hole. Practice Perfect’s

Famous Golf One LinersOnly a stupid golfer throws his club behind him. The smart golfer throws his club ahead so he can pick it up on the way to the next hole. -Tommy Armour Corollary: clubs don’t float.
