FINAL BEYOND MUNCH & MOVE WORKSHOPS
Thursday 12th May @ Parramatta 9:00am-3:30pm
Friday 17th June @ Baulkham Hills 9:00am-3:30pm
These are our last Beyond Munch & Move workshops so REGISTER NOW to avoid missing
out! Services who attend will receive a FREE piece of fundamental movement skills
equipment and the NEW Jack’s FUNtastic Day resource package which includes a
storybook, educator resource and activity cards. They will also have the chance to win a
$100 Bunnings Warehouse or Educational Experience voucher.
These workshops are delivered by the Early Childhood Training and Resource Centre (ECTARC) and provide a great refresher on the Munch & Move key messages and Practices including focusing on Fundamental Movement Skills, healthy eating learning experiences, and getting your whole team on board! By attending a workshop, your service will also be
working towards the following Munch & Move Program Adoption Practice:

Munch & Move Key Message
Turn off the TV & computer and get active
Children younger than two years of age should not spend any time watching television of using other electronic media (DVDs, computer and other electronic games).
For children two to five years of age, sitting and watching television and the use of other electronic media should be limited to less than one hour per day.
Responsible adults should monitor the time spent by children engaged in these activities.
How can your service support this key message?
Use Monitor learning experiences with pre-schoolers (page 160-162 of the Munch &
Move Resource Manual)
Have a clear policy on limiting small screen time
On wet days, encourage Move experiences
Promote productive sedentary activities for ‘down time’
instead of screens. For example, reading, listening to stories,
looking at books, art & craft, drawing, puzzles.
Only select screen time experiences that encourage
movement and being active
Designate certain days of the week as ’screen-free’ days.
Cover the TV to make sure it is not the centre of attention
Distribute the Munch & Move sheet (pictured) on reducing screen time to families
Participate in the Jack’s FUNtastic Day promotion (see opposite page) to support
Screen-Free week!
Through supporting this key message your service would also be meeting the following
Munch & Move Program Adoption Practices:
Practice 9: Site use of small screen recreation by 3-5 year olds is appropriate
Practice 7: Site provides physical activity for 1-5 year olds at least 25% of the daily opening
hours

To celebrate Screen-Free Week, we are providing all our Munch & Move services with the
opportunity to receive the NEW Jack’s FUNtastic Day resource pack which includes a
storybook, educator resource and activity cards.
What is Screen-Free Week?
An annual, international celebration when families, schools and communities swap digital
entertainment (TV, tablets, video games, computers, smartphones) for reading, playing,
thinking, creating, getting active, and spending more time with family and friends. Visit

What is Jack’s FUNtastic Day?
Jack’s FUNtastic Day is about a boy named Jack who leaves his
screen behind for a day to embark on a fun-finding expedition.
Along the way he meets Ruby and together they discover that
fun and games can be found just about anywhere.
This is an enjoyable storybook that has been developed to
promote physical activity and reduce small screen recreation for
children aged 3-6 years. The author is Angela Barrett who also
wrote The Magic Lunchbox book.
How do I receive the Jack’s FUNtastic Day resource pack?
1) Complete one centre-based screen-free activity and one activity providing
information to families on limiting screen time in May (some ideas are HERE)
2) Complete and submit the registration form by COB 31st May 2016, along with
evidence of your activities.
3) All submissions will receive a Jack’s FUNtastic Day pack. The top 3 submissions will
also win a $100 Bunnings Warehouse or Education Experience voucher AND a
Jingle Jam CD!

Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS)
FMS are a specific set of gross motor movements that involve different body parts such as the feet, legs, trunk, hands, arms and head. These skills are the basic building blocks for
more complex and specialised skills required by children throughout their lives to competently participate in games, sports and recreational activities.
It is important that early childhood educators guide and support children in the development of FMS as they do not naturally learn these skills as part of their normal
growth and development. As a result of including FMS in your daily program you will also be meeting the following Munch & Move Program Adoption Practice:
To assist your service in teaching the FMS, we will provide some game ideas on a few skills in each newsletter issue. In this issue, we will focus on leaping (locomotor skill) and
underarm rolling (manipulative skill). Also think about what popular games you are currently playing with the children that include these skills.
Practice 8: Site provides fundamental movement skills for children 3-5 years of age every day
to at least 90% of children
LEARN IT FIRST!
Educators should familiarise themselves with the skills and understand how to teach them correctly by watch-
ing the Fun Moves DVD (pictured) or youtube clips.
DON’T FORGET TO USE YOUR MUNCH & MOVE FMS RESOURCES!
FMS app now available! The app provides quick ideas for active games that can build children’s FMS. It also provides support for educators to help
teach the correct movement skills, with links to videos and other resources. Information about the app is here.

RECIPE INSPIRATION
VEGETABLE PIKELETS & HUMMUS
Sourced from the Healthy Food for Babies and Toddlers
cookbook, produced by our colleagues at Illawarra Shoalhaven LHD.
Vegetable Pikelets
Ingredients (makes 35-40 pikelets)
310g canned creamed corn
130g canned corn kernels
1 medium zucchini, grated
1 cup milk
3 tablespoons margarine, melted
2 eggs, beaten
1¼ cups self-raising flour
1. Combine creamed corn, corn kernels, zucchini, milk, margarine and eggs in a
medium-sized bowl. Mix well. Add flour and stir until combined.
2. Lightly grease non-stick frypan and heat. Drop 1 tablespoon portions of the mixture
into the fry pan and cook until bubbles start to rise on the sides. Turn and brown the
other side.
Hummus
Ingredients (makes 2 cups)
400g chickpeas, drained
1 clove of garlic, peeled and crushed
1 tablespoon lemon juice
¼ cup milk (can use water instead)
¼ cup tahini (sesame paste available
near the jams and spreads in most
supermarkets)
1. Combine all ingredients
2. Mash or puree until smooth
