Tip #5: FAFSA: what, where, when and how
The majority of Americans who want a college educaon worry about how they are
going to pay for it. Every year, tuion costs increase, and students everywhere have
to make hard decisions about their ability to pay for their college costs. Most
students will have to take out loans, and usually the loan conversaon includes filling
out the Free Applicaon for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The purpose of the FAFSA
is to see what kinds of federal aid you can qualify for so that your debt for a&er
school is not as mountainous.
The FAFSA is over 100 quesons about your family’s income, the taxes you pay, and
what you expect to be able to pay for your college expenses. It can be filled out
online at fafsa.ed.gov or via paper applicaon, which can be found in public libraries,
universies, and possibly even your high school. While such a long applicaon may
seem daunng, it has many benefits, including aid offered to nearly everyone who
applies, student friendly loans, and loans offered regardless of credit history.
Now that you know what the FAFSA is, when should you fill it out? Typically, the FAFSA has been released
on January 1st
of each year, however for the 2017-18 school year, the FAFSA will become available as early
as October 1st
, 2016. You want to try and fill out the FAFSA as early as you can, because federal aid is
given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. **Take note! If you are a senior in high school, this means that
you will be filling out the FAFSA while you are sll in high school. If you are already in college, you can fill
it out for each year that you a:end school in order to maximize the aid that you receive.
One of the largest misconcepons about the FAFSA is that you can’t fill it out unl your parents have filed
their taxes, which typically does not happen unl April. However, you can use esmates based on
previous years for your tax informaon, and then go back and give the finalized informaon when you
have it. Any federal aid you can receive will be added onto any athlec scholarship you may receive from
your university, so when the two are combined, your college educaon can be seriously discounted! Good
luck to all those who apply!

When did you start bowling the ISST? 2015
What is your favorite thing about the tour? The different oil patterns and traveling to new houses.
What kept you going through the hard times? My parents.
What advice would you give to someone who’s just starting the ISST? Don’t get mad, that’s the worst thing to do. The pat-terns are supposed to be hard, but that’s the point. Just go out there, bowl your best and have fun.
Who’s your biggest inspiration? My USBC prep coach, Coach Greg.
How many times have you been to Jr. Gold? 2016 will be my first Jr. Gold.
Overall, what has bowling done for you? Bowling has taught me leadership with help-ing others. It has also taught me how to con-trol my emotions. It has given me new friend-ships. It gives me something to look forward to everyday.

When did you start bowling the ISST? 14
What is your favorite thing about the tour? I would have to say my favorite thing about the tour is getting to meet so many different people and the lasting friendships that are made.
What kept you going through the hard times? Definitely my parents helped me the most when times were tough. They were there to give me that little extra push to keep fighting through any difficult times.
What advice would you give to someone who’s just starting the ISST? First of all, do not be intimidated by any of the older kids there and just focus on your next shot. The best advice I could give is to not give up on yourself even if you have been struggling all day long. Learning to shake off the rough times is important. Even the pro bowlers struggle at times.
Who’s your biggest inspiration? My parents have been my biggest inspiration, because they have pushed me to always do better, especially my father when we used to bowl in an adult/youth league.
How many times have you been to Jr. Gold? Five times.
What is your positive take-away from Jr. Gold? It was nice to be able to finish 17th last year, be-cause the entire tournament was a rollercoaster experience of emotions. Finishing that high was just verification for me that all the years of hard work competing in tournaments like the ISST actu-ally have made me a much better bowler.
What is your negative take-away from Jr. Gold? I personally did not think there was much wrong with the tournament other than the over crowding in the centers. The new format should fix this prob-lem, though the problem with the new format is; that the bowlers do not bowl enough games in a qualify-ing day.
Overall, what has bowling done for you? Bowl-ing has opened up so many doors for myself. Being able to meet new people and creating some amazing friendships is just the start. It is helping pay off some of my college debt and has allowed me to travel to so many different places across the country.

Who doesn’t have passion for the sport they love? Nobody, that is for sure. So why not take your passion and drive it into your involvement in that sport? There is no better feeling then becoming a key factor to help push your sport to bigger and better things than it was previously. Since I started working with the Illinois State Youth Leaders, I have learned a tremendous amount of infor-mation that I would never get my hands on if I remained a competitor in the IS-ST’s. Getting involved not only makes you feel better about yourself, but it helps people look at you as an authoritative figure who plans to become more knowledgeable in an area they cherish greatly. I encourage anyone who doesn’t know if they are “qualified” or “prepared” to try and get involved to give it a try. There is no better feeling than being able to sit here today and know how the decisions I make are making an impact on the sport I love. I look forward to seeing everyone as we approach the end of the season! Be well, Corben Sadowski
