THE Port St Johns municipality saysit is again going to lease its disusedproperties throughout the town toprivate investors so that they canbe developed.
The municipal properties were falling apartfollowing the termination of contracts with theprevious investors some years ago.
Since then, nobody has looked af- ter theproperties. Water and electricity were cut off,but people stayed in those properties illegally.
The properties include Mangrove, a venuewhich used to host big events for the peopleof Port St Johns and even for people from out-side.
Now Mangrove is a shadow of its former self, and has become victim to vandals and thebeautiful grass roofs of the rondavels havebeen blown away by the wind.
Another property to be leased out is Vuyani,at the mouth of Second Beach.
Mayor Phikolomzi Langa said the townneeded to get investors to lease the propertiesand develop them for the benefit of the peopleof Port St Johns.
“I can confirm that the management hascommitted to give out those sites so that theycan be developed.”
He said they were coming with new strate-gies to make this initiative work and to avoid
experiencing problems similar to the previousones.
They needed to conclude the process of leas-ing these properties towards the end of theyear. “We will advertise them in all types ofmedia, so that we can reach everybody.”
Most of Port St Johns sites are privatelyowned, and Langa said he was planning tohave a meeting with the owners of the sites andthey should propose when and how they weregoing to develop their sites.

THE taxi industry welcomed the Eyethu“Route toMarket” lubricant shop recentlyopened at Chatham taxi rank in Mthathaby the Eastern Cape Development Corpo-ration (ECDC).
The ECDC and Ultramart, trading asBardahl SA, had entered into a partner-ship for establishing and rolling out about30 shops which are expected to employ 300youngpeople at taxi ranks across theEast-ern Cape. The risk capital head at the ECDC, Pha-
kamisa George, said the Chatham taxirank Bardahl Eyethu shop was a R3,1 mil-lion six-month pilot which would be usedas a case study to develop a business planfor the roll-out of other shops.“It is the same concept as fuel compa-
nies establishing filling stations wherethey bring convenience to people, so weare following the same trend. Taxi opera-tors do not enjoy the luxury of an ordinarycar owner who can go to any lubricantstore to buy lubricants and fast-moving
car parts like oil filters and brake fluidsbecause they have to keep their place inthe queue,” George said.“While holding their positions in the
queue, taxi operators could also check andchange lubricants and pads at their conve-nience.”“We are hoping to open 30 more stores
across the province at various taxi rankswhere entrepreneurs are interested in es-tablishing their own stores and we willgladly finance the stores once all the rele-vant steps are followed,” he said.Eastern Cape Taxi Owners’ Association
chairman, ZanemvulaGaya, said theyhadnever seensuchaconvenient initiative fortheir taxi operators.“Wearevery thankful for this initiative.
It is a first and we welcome it,” he said.He said they were also looking forward
to having these shops in all their nineranks in Mthatha. The shops will sell car lubricants, oils
and additives, as well as fast-moving carparts such as spark plugs, brake pads, fil-ters and shock absorbers, among otheritems.
