New for 2010 Team Travel Development
Where: Uganda
This Team Travel Development trip to
Uganda is offered in partnership with
the Pearl of Africa Children’s Choir,
which is a UK-based charity that
supports three schools in the Masaka
district in Uganda. As well as a
primary and secondary school with
500 pupils in each, there is a farm
school with 25 students. The purpose
of the farm school is to teach
sustainable organic farming and
farm management techniques
enabling the students to improve
nutrition, generate income and
improve the livelihood status within
their households. NFYFC intends to
send a team of 10-12 members to
volunteer for two weeks and to get
involved with all aspects of running
and maintaining the schools.
Whatever your area of expertise, it
will get used, whether that be
decorating school rooms, clearing
land or advising on how to increase
milk yields. A can-do attitude is a
must. You will be provided with
three hot meals a day and are
hosted in the mission house, which
has bunk beds, flushing loos and
cold showers. There is a football
pitch (of sorts) and the children love
to play with the volunteers. Expect
a warm welcome and an
experience that will change your life
for ever. Further information
available from the Discovery office.
Homestays
Where: Australia, Austria, Canada,
France, Germany, New Zealand,
Norway, Scotland, Sweden,
Switzerland and Northern Ireland
While we have YFCs, other countries
have their own rural youth
organisations. By linking up with
them, the Discovery Homestay gives
members the opportunity to travel
to other countries and be guests of
their organisations. It is a safe and
friendly way to see a country,
experience its culture, make new
friends and learn about young
farmer organisations elsewhere.
The host organisation arranges for
you to stay with a series of members’
families who will provide
accommodation, meals and an
introduction to the local area. You
will need to be flexible and be
prepared to take part in anything,
whether it is helping on the farm,
going to meetings and events, or
giving talks about YFC and life at
home.
What the members say: “I am having an
absolutely amazing time. I have met
some wonderful people and I don't think
I want to come back! Seen a variety of
things, from milking to potato harvesting,
plus I have even made cheese.”
Lizzie Matthews, Oxfordshire
Team Travel
Rural Youth Europe
Seminars/Study Session
Where: Spring Seminar in Serbia &
Macedonia; Summer Study Session
in Budapest and Autumn Seminar
in Scotland
Travel as part of a team with other
members, meet up with young
farmers from all over Europe, take
part in workshops and group visits,
and have lots of fun.
Rural Youth Europe Rally
Where: Sweden
Have a great time discovering new
cultures, making new friends and
representing your country together
with young farmers from 17 different
European countries.
What the members say: “Thank you so
much from bottom of my heart for giving
me the chance to go on this trip! Its
been amazing! I've just got back & I just
had to send you this email. I truly have
made friends for life. Thank you!”
Bob Dronfield, Derbyshire
Team Travel Development
Where: Kenya
The Team Travel Development trip is
offered in partnership with GSE
Ecotours and is for the little more
daring; it is a Homestay experience in
Kenya, a developing country. A
group of between 10 and 12
members will travel to Kenya and stay
with local families and sample village
life of a very different sort. You will
also get involved in a community
project. The welcome will be warm,
and the trip will give you an insight
into a way of life and its problems
that are very different from our
own. Further information and
example itinerary available from
the Discovery office.
Get paid to go! Working Exchange
C Alma Baker Trust Travel Award Where: New Zealand
If you have practical agricultural
experience and you are prepared to
muck in, why not apply to work at
Limestone Downs? The farm is an
intensive enterprise with 20,000 sheep
and 1,000 beef cattle on its 7,954
acres. It continuously explores new
management techniques and works
closely with Massey University. It is
located on the North Island’s west
coast just south of Port Waikato. The
C Alma Baker Trust funds four YFC
members each year to fly to New
Zealand and work on the farm for
three months. Applicants must have
a full driving licence.
What the members say: “This award is not
for the work shy. Although there are
plenty of opportunities to play hard; this is,
after all, a practical farming award and
as such you must work hard, too. A
beautiful place with fantastic people and
then the time to travel NZ on completion.
The award really is the opportunity of a
lifetime to experience NZ farming and
people, but don't just take my word for
it...” Carwyn Edwards, Carmarthenshire

How to apply for a Discovery trip Being part of Discovery 2010 is easy. Decide which of the trips you would like to apply for and contact your county
office or the Discovery officer for an application form, or download one from www.nfyfc.org.uk/discovery.html. Send
the completed form to your county office – you will need to check when the office wants it by. Your county office will
sign the form and send it to the Discovery officer before the closing date of Friday 20 November. You will then be
invited (everyone except the Sweden 4H Youth Camp (under 18) applicants) to attend the Selection Day at the NFU
Mutual Head offices in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, on Saturday 5 December.
Need help with funding your trip? Don’t worry if you think that you can’t afford to travel with Discovery. There are lots of local and national funds and
trusts that may be able to help fund your trip and attendance at the International Selection Day. Speak to your
County Office or the Discovery officer for some more advice.
