Irony• Uses language for
effect (emphasis, humor, etc.)
• Can be used in any situation (sad as well as happy)
Sarcasm• Uses irony for humor
or attack• Usually is in the form
of praise (“That’s a great haircut, Mr. Leach.”
• A form of wit
