Strong results for national stations as
RTE 2FM, Today FM and Newstalk grow in
market share.
FM104 still remains Dublin’s most listened to radio
station after achieving an increase of 2.2
percentage points in market share.
Local stations see a decrease in their market share
whereas national stations gain listeners. However,
96FM is still Cork’s favourite radio station.
The trend amongst local stations this year is mixed with
movement both up and down in terms of market share.
KFM remains static.

Headlines• Independent national radio stations Newstalk and Today FM saw increases in market share this
book. In the last six months (April – September ’12), Newstalk Breakfast has experienced a dropin listenership when compared with the same period in 2011. It fell from 128,000 to 119,000following on from the departure of Ivan Yates. In the same slot on Radio 1, Morning Ireland lost13,000 listeners, however this is only 3% of their listeners and they are still the strongest nationalstation in Ireland, by far.
• This book showed that 2FM may have stabilised slightly after some time spent struggling withlistenership. The signs of stabilisation began in the last book and continue to become apparentas they increase market share to 12.2% for Housekeepers with Children.
• The over abundance of radio stations available in the country’s capital has always provenchallenging for the stations broadcasting there to stand out amongst the crowd. This book’sresults have shown that FM104 is firmly Dublin’s most listened to radio station with furthergrowth in the capital to 13.6% for All Adults. This was a significant jump of 2.2 percentage points.Further to this, Spin has now placed itself on par with Q102 in terms ofmarket share against All Adults with an increase of 2.2 percentage pointsYOY.

• Despite a tiny drop in market share for RTE Radio 1, it remains by far the most popular nationalstation with a share of 22.9% amongst All Adults.
• RTE 2FM is experiencing slight growth in market share for All Adults and Housekeepers withChildren. To look at Housekeepers with Children in particular, they increased to 12.2% marketshare which is up by 0.8 percentage points year on year. Similarly with the adults audience,listeners increased which could indicate continued stabilisation for the station that has struggledfor some years.
• Newstalk grew its market share to 4.6% for All Adults and 5.3% for Housekeepers with Children.The Breakfast Show shows no dip in listenership in this book but looking at the last six monthsin isolation confirms that listeners have in fact, dropped off.
• Today FM proves to be the most popular national station for Adults 15-34 with a large marketshare of 15%.They experienced only a small drop of 2 percentage points for this audience yearon year, however the market share for All Adults grew from 9.1% to 9.7%.
• Total average daily listening has dropped by one minute from 236 minutes to 235 minutes.

Dublin – Year on year comparison• Positive results for national stations in Dublin with RTE Radio 1, RTE 2FM and Newstalk all
gaining listeners in the capital.
• FM104’s market share continues to grow and the station experienced an increase inlistenership of 2.2 percentage points. It has cemented itself as Dublin’s most listened toradio station with a 13.6% market share in the capital.
• Spin 1038 has seen big increases this book moving up to 8.1 percentage points market sharefor All Adults and 23.2 percentage points market share for Adults 15-34.
• Both Q102 and 98FM had disappointing books with losses of 2.2 percentage points and 2.6percentage points respectively.
• After a strong launch into the Dublin market, Nova have experienced a drop of 0.6percentage points in All Adults market share.
• Stations performing well for Housekeepers with Children include FM104, Q102 and 98FM.

Cork – Year on year comparison• All national stations grew in market share with the exception of Newstalk which dropped
0.4 percentage points in All Adults share.
• Today FM gained 1.6 percentage points in All Adult share and is the most popular nationalstation amongst Housekeepers with Children and Adults 15-34 in the local Cork area.
• Less positive results for local Cork stations as 96FM/103FM combined fall by 4.3percentage points.
• Despite drops in market share for 96/103FM YOY in terms of All Adults, they remainstrong amongst Housekeepers with Children and Adults 15-34. 96/103FM is still the mostpopular radio station in Cork despite losses of market share.
• 4FM continues to perform well in the Cork market with a 3.9% market share amongstAll Adults.

Local/Regional – Year on year comparisonRegional• Spin South West and Beat see positive results with both stations jumping in market share for Adults
15-34 in their station broadcast areas. Spin South West gained 3 percentage points bringing themto 35%. iRadio sees differing results across their two station offerings with a dip in market sharefor i102-104 as i105-107 grows.
Local• Local stations see a mix of both gains and drops in market share. Some of the biggest movers
include Ocean FM and Highland Radio which both saw an increase in listenership in their stationbroadcast areas. Particularly disappointing results for Midlands 103 and Clare FM which droppedby 7 percentage points each. KFM is the only station that remains static year on year.
4FM• 4FM does well in Cork with a market share of 3.7% for Adults 20-44. Their fan base is not as big in
Dublin, yet still they increased their market share by 0.3 percentage points to 0.9% for Adults 20-44.

• RTÉ Radio One, 2FM & Today FM all lost market share predominantly due to increasedcompetition from local and multi-regional/city radio stations
• 2FM saw the biggest decline falling by 1.9% to 8.2%.
• Newstalk remains static at 4% market share and RTÉ Lyric FM is showing a marginalincrease from 1.6% to 1.7%
• Since Gerry Ryan’s death, 2FM has lost 2% in reach going from 14% in Jan-Jun 2010 to12% in Jul-Dec 10
• The influx of regional/local stations targeting the youth audience is reflected in its highmarket share for Ads 1534 at 62.1%
• 2FM and Today FM have seen significant declines in the 15-34 market, dropping 2.5 and3.3 percentage points respectively
• Average daily listening has dropped over 1% from 237 to 234 minutes

Lunchtimes on Today FM have been taken over by awardwinning presenter KC from November 12th. KC has beenpart of the Today FM team for two years and has previouslystood in for Ian Dempsey, Ray D’Arcy and Ray Foley.
