Faculty
Neal Haskell, PhD, MS An internationally famous lecturer from St. Joseph’s College and a board certified expert in forensic entomology, Dr. Haskell will explain how bugs can help solve crimes. He and his work have been featured on PBS, A&E, The History Channel, and The Learning Channel as well as in Popular Science and Discovery magazines. He has testified in numerous cases, including the Casey Anthony trial.
Ed Herschaft, MA, DDS has been a forensic odontologist for more than 40 years working in Louisiana, South Carolina, and Nevada. He co-edited the 4th Edition of the Manual of Forensic Odontology and has written and spoken extensively on the subject. He is a past president of the American Society of Forensic Odontology. For the last decade he has worked with the Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office in Las Vegas. Ed is a former LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry faculty member.
Elias Kontanis, PhD is employed by the National Transportation Safety Board where he investigates the causes of multi-fatality accidents. Dr. Kontanis has worked at JPAC-CIL, is a member of DMORT and participated in the 9/11 WTC investigation and the crash of Egypt Air 990. He is currently the Chairman of SWGDVI, the scientific working group charged with advancing the scientific basis for disaster victim identification.
Kevin R. Levy is a retired US Secret Service agent who specializes in the reconstruction of cellular technology communication – tracking the when and where of cell phone use. Cell phone usage continues to play an increasingly important role in criminal investigations as well as in corporate and other litigation venues. Mr. Levy has also worked cases specifically related to the Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Virginia A. Lynch, BS, MSN, RN is a pioneer in the field of forensic nursing. She began her career in forensics as a death investigator in Ft. Worth, Texas and served as a coroner in Georgia. She is internationally respected in her field and has represented the American Academy of Forensic Sciences throughout the world. Her expertise includes intervention and treatment of the sexually abused adult and child as well as the legal and psychological issues in family related violence.
Edward Mazuchowski, Lt. Col., USAF is with the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System from the Port Mortuary at the Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.
David W. Rivers, BSC, MS is a retired Detective Sergeant with the Metro-Dade Police Department assigned to the Homicide Bureau for 20 years. As a lead investigator and supervisor he conducted and assisted in several hundred investigations including homicides, suicides, accidental and other deaths. He served as Supervisor of the “Cold Case Squad” investigating over 1,800 open homicides dating back to 1951. He has also consulted on cases in the United States, Canada, Holland and the United Kingdom.
Dawnie Steadman, PhD is a skeletal biologist who specializes in forensic anthropology, bioarchaeology and human rights investigations. She is a Board Certified Forensic Anthropologist and consults for medical examiners and law enforcement across the nation. Dr. Steadman has succeeded the founder, Dr. Bill Bass, as the Director of the Forensic Anthropology Center at the University of Tennessee – the “Body Farm.”
David L. Wells, Colonel, USAF, DC (DDS, MS) currently serves as the Director of Dental Operations Joint Base Elmedorf-Richardson in Alaska and as Military Consultant to the Surgeon General for Forensic Dentistry.

LSU Health CDE is pleased to offer a forensics hands-on workshop preceding the Investigation for Identification Conference. Led by David L. Wells, Colonel, USAF, DC (DDS, MS), the full-day workshop will cover the fundamentals of conducting a postmortem dental examination and identification.
A two-hour overview lecture will review basic principles of forensic identification of human remains using dental evidence.
The lecture is followed by a five-hour mass casualty exercise utilizing cadaver specimens. Participants will work in teams to identify over 25 remains from a mock air crash incident. The teams will work on a combination of skeletonized and formalin-fixed cadaver specimens.
Learn the history of mass disaster victim identification and experience being part of the dental identification team.
