“Hormones and Diabetes”

The endocrine system regulates:

• growth and development

• reproduction

• energy production, utilization and storage

• maintains homeostasis

Page 6: Introduction to Endocrinology Block Endocrinology

Hormones

• molecules that are synthesized and secreted by specialized cells• produced in glands, ectopic tissue or

exogenous• may be stored in large amounts in gland

• may act in • same cell autocrine• nearby cell paracrine• distant cell endocrine

Hormones and Receptors

Page 8: Introduction to Endocrinology Block Endocrinology

Disorders of the Endocrine System

• not enough hormone/resistance to activity • too much hormone/excess hormone action• structural change in gland with or without

change in level of hormone

• may be congenital, hereditary or acquired• may have one or more hormone/gland

involved• will have short and long term effects

Page 9: Introduction to Endocrinology Block Endocrinology

Investigations

• History and physical examination

• Biochemical assessment including “dynamic testing”

• Imaging

• Response to therapy

Page 10: Introduction to Endocrinology Block Endocrinology

Treating endocrine disorders

• not enough hormone• replace hormone or target tissue product

• too much hormone• remove or destroy source• block production• block action

• space occupying lesion• observe, remove or destroy it

• monitor and treat short and long term consequences
