India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF) provides a platform for creative minds at India Smart Grid Week (ISGW) Competitions 2017
ISGF hosted the India Smart Grid Week (ISGW) Competitions 2017 at the Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology (NSIT) on 20-21-22 January 2017. ISGW Competitions 2017 included Hackathon, Appathon and Innothon which witnessed participation of more than 200 technology enthusiasts from over 40 organizations across India.
The competitions received an overwhelming response from educational bodies and corporate groups across the nation. ISGF along with Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL), NSIT and Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), Mumbai facilitated the competitions which included Hackathon, Appathon and Innothon in New Delhi.
The competitions witnessed participation of over 200 enthusiastic minds from over 40 organizations across India. Students of various educational institutions participated including PEC University of Technology, VJTI, NSIT, Xavier Institute of Management, BITS Pilani, UPES, IIIT Delhi, DTU, UCMS (Nepal) and many more. There was participation from officials of utilities and private organizations such as Punjab State Power Corporation Limited, Southco Utility, Team Sodevan, ABB GISPL, Microsoft, Bechtel India and many more. This year, the competitions witnessed participation of a few young minds from schools as well who showcased their creativity by making mobile app for natural disaster alerts and participated in Hackathon to crack the cyber security bridge.
Participants of the competitions worked 48 hours non-stop on various innovative and ground-breaking concepts related to Smart Grids and Smart Cities. The competition parameters for each were:
• Hackathon: To ‘Capture the Flag (CTF)’ which involved participants to hack into a SCADA system, toggle a switch and exit the system
• Appathon: To create a smart phone App that will be useful for electric, water and gas utilities and their customers, smart city administration, transport, security, health, sanitation, education etc
• Innothon: To showcase an innovative and ground-breaking concept via a concept note, an electronic-hardware/embedded -hardware prototype with suitable software tool
A group of esteemed jury members from the industry, utilities, incubation centres and academic institutions judged the results for each competition. The 62 innovative solutions presented by participating teams made it difficult for the judges to evaluate and decide the winners. The enthusiastic team of students from Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), Mumbai, who won the Appathon Competition, designed a mobile app on a security solution for power utilities to empower medical patients to open source disease information and get medical advices.
The first position in the Innothon was bagged by a team of students from four different institutes - Chennai namely RNK Engineering College, Sastra University, SRM University and Sri Sairam Institute of Technology. They designed models on Industrial Internet of Things and Virtual Reality to scan inner sectional view of the products, improve field services and maintenance digitally; and monitor Power Grids for cyber threats in real-time.
The First Prize winners of Appathon and Innothon won INR 1 Lakh each. The Winners of Hackathon Competition, students from IIT Delhi, were awarded 2nd Prize since they were able to reach upto 2nd level of hacking the SCADA system and won a prize money of INR 1 lakh.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Reji Kumar Pillai, President, India Smart Grid Forum commented, "Competitions like these are an incredible approach to create multi-faceted talent - masterminds, practitioners, planners, engineers. We are happy to have had a chance to engage with quality talent and are delighted by the array of remarkable models created by the participants. We will continue to host similar events to provide opportunities to the aspiring and innovative minds for showcasing their talent”.

It was pleasure to attend and speak at the ISGW. A suggestion is to have lesser number of parallel sessions as people get distributed and if two parallel sessions are of interest can attend one only.

Congratulation to a successful India Smart Grid Week 2017. It was very good opportunity and platform for dialogue on smart grid. The Second India-Sweden Round Table on Smart Grid that we arranged will take the co-operation between Sweden and India on smart grid one step further.
thThe debate on 10 March 2017 that I participated in was productive.
I´m looking forward to a continued dialogue and co-operation with you and ISGF.

Thanks you very much for organizing the fantastic trade show covering Smart Grid market in India. Only suggestion for 2018, let us do a separate session for utilities on Smart Grid, walk them through the complete process of selection and deployment of smart metering technologies. Happy to work with your organization.
