Natural elements• Trees and shrubs- can help isolated homes with wind break• Plants- certain plants can help conserve water because they

use less water (this is called xeriscaping)• Sun- form of energy absorbed by the sun is called solar• Water- ultra low flush toilets conserve water; using sprinklers

late at night and first thing in the morning• Hills- topography (way the land lays) is the practice of a home

placed at the bottom of a hill so that it is protected from a cold North wind

• Window placement- houses placed so windows face south to allow absorption of heat is called orientation
