Did you have a “song of the sum-mer” last year? A song that made you feel like everything was wa-ter-ice-wonderful as you headed to the shore with your car win-
dows down? A tune that put a strut in your step as you walked down Walnut Street
with a Goldie tahina shake?
According to Rolling Stone magazine and NPR’s All Songs Considered, the number-one song that blared out of rolled-down windows in the summer of 2018 was “I Like It” by Cardi B, Bad Bunny,
and J. Balvin. Billboard’s country chart called it for country stalwart David
Lee Murphy with “Every-thing’s Gonna Be Alright.” The
podcast Too Beautiful to Live named “Happy/Unhappy” by The
Beths (google it – it’s a good one.) Of course, Martha & The Vandellas’
“Dancing in the Street” or The Lovin’ Spoonful’s “Summer in the City” are peren-
nial songs of summer and might be the ones that make you dance on your porch when the
weather heats up no matter what year it is.
Jewish music gives us songs of summer too. JCC Camps at Medford’s Associate Director Sara Side-man says hearing “Od Yavo Shalom Aleinu” brings her to a summer frame of mind. Rachel Cohen, a Gesher counselor at Camp Ramah in the Poconos last summer, said Josh Warshawsky melodies were the songs of last summer, each one becoming part of the fabric of Ramah 2018. Note: he’ll be visiting us again next year, so I hope Ramah campers will join us in February 2020 to be transported back to
summer in Pennsylvania!
Music has the power to take us back – the first notes of a song on the radio can be a veritable time machine. Katrina and the Waves’ “Walking on Sunshine” immediately transports me back to summer in high school – which songs take you back and stir up summer memories?
Of course, these musical sense memories aren’t all joyful – they can be bittersweet. As The Who says in their classic “Summertime Blues,” “There ain’t no cure” for that particular malady. The high expectations we place on summer can be hard to meet, and for every upbeat song of summer, there are plenty that are tinged with sadness. Many of those same Camp Ramah campers and counselors who “hmmmm” to Rabbi Warshawsky’s “Hameira” also have a powerful relationship to the sorrowful sounds of Tish’a B’Av, the only Jewish holiday to be commemorated during the summer months. The ninth of Av is the major day of communal Jewish mourning on our calendar. Tradition tells us that it commemorates the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem, in 586 B.C.E and 70 C.E. respectively. Over the centuries that have followed, more Jewish tragedies have come to be marked on this same day, from the Crusades to the expulsion of the Jews from England in 1290 and Spain in 1492 to the beginning of World War I. Does every date correspond to the 9th? No. But it is a beautiful custom of localizing all our mourning on one day – truly the saddest day of our calendar.
And the music of Tish’a B’av evokes this mourn-ing deeply. We sit on the floor and read by candlelight as we chant the beautiful kinnot – the powerful and emotional poems that have been written over the centuries to remember the de-struction of the Temples. Eli Tzion and the entire Book of Lamentations – Eicha, in Hebrew – tell the story in a stirring minor mode.

The Balance Between Tradition and ChangeBy Steve Borenstein, TBS President | [email protected]
I am excited and honored to serve as President of Temple Beth Sholom and that you have put your trust and confidence in me to lead our great congregation.
My love of Judaism and synagogue life began as a child growing up in Margate and attend-ing Congregation Beth Judah in Ventnor
where my parents still remain active. Known today as Shirat Hayam, it has become a breeding ground for TBS Presidents as I am now the third TBS President to have grown up at Beth Judah following in the footsteps of Margie Dannenbaum and Mark Kramer. From as far back as I can remember the shul has always been part of my life. My parents were always busy with the synagogue. My dad setting up and ushering on High Holidays and being on call for daily minyans. My mom served on various com-mittees and active in Sisterhood. And of course, my brother and I attended Hebrew School, USY, and helped out whenever asked.
So, when Allison and I decided it was time to join a synagogue it was important that we found a place that we could call home — a shul where we could feel both spiritually and socially con-nected and a place where our children, Jayson and Adam, could grow up and foster a love of Torah and Jewish values. We found that home and so much more here at TBS.
Over the past few months I have thought a lot about taking on the role of President. Many of you have come up to me to offer congratulations for which I thank you…some of you to offer your condolences for which I thank you as well. But the most common question that I have been asked is if I am nervous and my answer has been No! Not because I think it’s going to be easy or because I’m over confident, but because I know that I have the support of my TBS family. In addition to offering me congratulations, so many of you have followed up with “Let me know how I can help or what can I do to help you.” Led by our exceptional clergy and professional staff, we are a congregation willing to donate their time and expertise for whatever the cause may be to make TBS the best it can be. I am always so impressed by what we can accomplish as a congregation.
Back in April I traveled to JTS along with Rabbi Peltz and this year’s PLI cohort where we had the opportunity to learn with the JTS faculty and tour the new 21st century campus. We also spent some time with Chancellor Arnie Eisen where he talked about the future of Conservative Judaism and how we must balance tradi-tion vs. change. He recently wrote an essay about this in which he goes on to say, “It’s clear to me that Conservative Judaism must respond creatively to the massive transformation of our lives. It cannot possibly remain the same as it has been in the past.”
So, I began to think about how we can manage that balance be-tween tradition and change here at TBS and what we need to do to ensure long term sustainability. And I don’t mean just finan-cial sustainability but working to make sure we remain relevant in a constantly changing community. I realize accepting change is no easy task but change is a necessary task. We must continue to find creative and meaningful ways to connect to the changing demographics of our community while at the same time stay true to the core values that have made TBS the shul that we have all come to love today.
We also need to create a path to archive long-term financial sustainability. We know that over time our costs will continue to rise. So just as we develop personal financial plans for things like our children’s educational expenses or our retirement, TBS must put a plan in place to ensure long-term financial sustainability. Our Sponsors and Plus Givers play a vital role in funding our annual operating budget, but we also need to develop a long-term plan. For example, our Endowment helps to fund many programs and projects but we need to continue to grow our Endowment so that in the future it will help fund a big chunk of our operating budget, thus reducing our dependency on dues.
In addition, over the past three years, with the help of the Jewish Community Foundation and the Life & Legacy initiative, we have started to have the conversation with many of you about Planned Giving but we still have much work to do. Planned Giving and Endowments will play a vital role in TBS’s long-term success.
Chancellor Eisen concludes that, “This is an exciting time for Jews. Our challenges are matched by our possibilities.” I am up for the challenge and excited to take that journey with all of you.

This too is a song of our Jewish summer. If you’ve never joined us at TBS for our Tish’a B’Av evening service, con-sider it this year. The dress is casual; the music is beautiful. On Saturday night, August 10 at 7:40 pm, we will chant the evocative melodies of this day; then, once our fast is over the following night, and with it the marking of these events, we return to our joyous summer activities.
Just one week later, we’ll join as a TBS down-the-shore family for Havdallah at the Beach on August 17th. I’ll see you there, and we can share our songs of the summer of 2019.
