Inside, Outside and In between

Heidi Thompson
Heidi Thompsons work is very inspiring and abstract this is the reason why I selected this par>cular ar>st. It is inspiring because of the colours used in her work; the colours represent Body, Mind and soul. Each pain>ng has mixtures of bright colours that stands out to the audience. Thompsons work inspires me to develop my ideas further because of the way she uses colour to interpret her theme, also she adds texture To her work, in order to let the pain go in a direc>on of its own without any control of the ar>st. this ar>st inspires me to add texture to my work and also use bright colours.
BarneF Newman Mark Rothko
Adam 1951‑2
Saffron, 1957
BarneF Newman’s work is inspiring because the pain>ng is very simple looking and abstract. The pain>ng is simple because there are only three lines that recure with different shades of red and width. It is also abstract because it doesnt give out a specific idea as to what the pain>ng is about. personally, this work looks very simple because of the straight lines, it looks effortless and i connect with the work because of the way the small stripes of bright red colour contrasts with the dark purple colour it creates a dull emo>on because the purple covers most of the canvas . this pain>ng coco is compared with mark Rothko is very simillar because of the lines, however they are different because of the various use of colours which creates an emo>on.
Mark Rothko's work is very warm looking; the colours used in this pain>ng creates a warm and content feeling. The golden colour used as a border of the cansvas makes the pain>ng stand out more while a white line divides the red in the middle into two. the colour black emerges from various corners of the pain>ng, this contrasts the bright colours with the dark colours. There is no clear meaning to the work because it is semi-‐ abstract, the only imagery that can be iden>fied are the shapes. i connect with this work because it conveys an emo>on through the colours. Rothko's pain>ng compared with Newman's pain>ng are simillar because of the use of red and they are also different because yhe lines in newmans work is ver>cal while Rothko's work is horizontal.

Bleeding, 2003-‐2004
The reason why i have selected this work from Howard Hodgkin is because of the way the name of this pain>ng is visually seen. By this i mean that blood is red and the top
layer of the pain>ng is red lines which relates to the pain>ng.Colour is important to this piece because it
overwhelms everything else including the frame of the canvas, Hodgkin paints over it. In my opinion, the work explores the ar>sts thoughts and ideas because of the
various colours and layers used in the pain>ng, through the red paint, black and yellow paint is seen which shows the
layers. Hodgkins work is different to S>lls work because it has very
dark colours.
The main focal point of this piece are the colours seen through the main background colours which are red purple and blue, these colours are seen on the canvas as cracks. I was drawn to analyse this piece because of the colours, if the colours were taken away, the type of image that will be
leZ would be a canvas with abstract shapes in it. There are no recurring shapes or paFerns in the piece. I dont think that there i a clear meaning in this piece,
however, the name yellowclyff relates to this piece because the main colour in the canvas is yellow.
This work compared to Hodgkins work is different because it is brighter and has more calming colours.

I did some research on the most common feelings that are felt, and my results were: Happiness, Sadness and Anger. I then searched what colours are associated with these emo>ons, then i found these colours and also in my oppinion the colours interpret the emo>ons . I did this research in order to gain insipra>on formy work because i am trying to convey these emo>ons just likeHeidi Thompson.
These are the first stages in which i began my three pain>ngs. I used rectangular cards and painted them with white paint, so that they becomes easy to paint on. I wanted some texture in my work, so i added some wood chippings on the different cards, however, i saw that the wood chippings didnt create enough texture, so i then mixed Polyfiller with the paint to create a rough texture on the card, which i then leZ to dry so that they can become hard and stable in order for me to paint on.
These are my final outcome for the Happiness, sadness and Anger pain>ngs. Altogether the strenghts of these pain>ngs are mainly the texture, this is because the texture makes the pain>ngs seem more intriguing. The colours i used in the pain>ngs, are mainly bright colours. i should have mixed the colours more in order to make them more rich and appealin. While looking at the final outcome of my work i think that i should have considered the colours used and the scale. i think i should have worked on a more solid surface and a larger or smaller surface. However these pain>ng look good to an extent especially the Happiness pain>ng, i wanted it to look really bright and upliZing, i think i managed to convey this emo>on. however in the other pain>ngs i dont think i managed to convey the emo>on i was aiming to show. The colours should have blended more together and also i think i should have dismissed the emo>on that i was aiming to portray and just paint on the board so that the finished outcome can be decided what emo>on is seen on the pain>ng. In-‐addi>on, i can also let the paint run through the canvas and the textures without my control in order to make it a more abstract piece
Happiness Sadness Anger
Monica Grzymala
These pieces by Gryzmala would help me to develop my ideas further because I want to make a tape installa>on. Scale is important to this work because it makes the audience analyze the work more in depth. Colour is important to this piece because the black creates a feeling of boldness. The medium used to create this piece is tape, this medium is important because it makes a really good impact on me as a viewer. Personally this work affects me because of the interpreta>on I have of it which is that the work looks powerful.
Space
I looked a various spaces where i can do an installa>on of my work. i went areound the media block to look at public spaces and various interes>ng angles in which my work can be displayed. these spaces have appealing angles in which my work can be curved around in order to make it more engaging.
I chose a space by the stairs and then created this installa>on made with grey Duct tape, to contain an empty space on the
wall. I think i managed to achieve the visual element which i was
trying to convey, which is to make the light in the middle of the wall to stand out as if the tape is coming out of the light. The scale is not important to a certain extent, because the
piece can s>ll work if it was big or small, although it stands out more when its big.
The colour is important because it is a dark gery colour which makes it stand out, although it creates a dark emo>on, if the colour was taken away, or changed to a brighter colour, the emo>on that would be created would be a more upliZing
emo>on. I think the light in the middle is very important to the piece because it seems as if the piece is built around it to make it stand out more, this can be interpreted by the viewers in
various ways when it comes to what they thiunk the piece is.
Jim Lambie
This piece by Jim Lambie is going to help me to develop my ideas further because of the colourful tape used to create the work. Scale is important to the piece because of the colorfulness of the work which makes it more easier to analyse, colour is important to this piece because it overwhelms everything else and when you take away the colours, the paFerns leZ are lines. The medium that this ar>st has used to create this piece is tape, this makes it important because of the visual impact it makes on me as a viewer.
This is my first aFempt with the insula>on tape.
These photographs show the stages in which i went through to create this piece. I started off with a triangle which i thought was fine, then i got the idea of taking the triangle further by making more triangles and making the scale bigger. I think this worked well because the outcome is very
eyecatching and aFrac>ve.
This is my second installa>on. I like this installa>on because of the way it curves around the walls and also the space i have chosen for this work is very odd and an unexpected place to do an installa>on
piece. The scale of this piece is important, i
wanted it to be a smaller one and also the shape i chose was a rectangle, because i wanted it to be more of a common shape because of the angles in the space which
would make it look more advanced. The colours of the lines go from dark to light, this is to make it more vibrant and
appealing. From afar the piece looks like a normal
triangle, however as youre walking closer, the right side of the rectangle looks as if its
moving up, this would interest the audience.
This is my third installa>on, i based this piece around a light because i wanted the
hexagon shape to stand out to the audience, i also wanted the simple light to stand out because of the colourful tape
around it. Scale is not important because this piece s>ll works because of the scale, however i
can s>ll add more tape in order to make the piece more bold also the different colours of the
tapes are important because they
This is my final photograph of my work. I have chosen this work as my final one because of the way i made use of the big space with
the different shapes and the recurring colour of tape. This piece works because of the scale, it makes the audience analyse it more, the colous of the tapes go from the darkest colour which is bright, to the brightest colour which is yellow, these colours overwhelm everything else because without the colours, what would be leZ
is the recurring shapes in the piece which are triangles and diamond shapes. I wanted to make the light in the middle stand out and i also wanted it to be a part of my work, so i made it more bold by crea>ng my piece around it and also pubng two small
triangles above and below it to make it more dis>nct.
