Amazing young inventors like Jenifer are the stars of the program. And the best of the best are recognized in the “Invention Convention Hall of Fame.”

We’ll introduce some of them in this presentation.

Recognition for the students is a fundamental tenant of the program, showcasing their achievements as problem solvers and entrepreneurs who put their classroom lessons to practical use in the real world.

The Invention Convention gives our community a chance to see the great work taking place in our schools that generally goes unnoticed.

More InventorsCold 'cure' wins Edison AwardTwo home-schooled students from Westerville claimed the top prize at the 2008 Invention Convention by proposing a cure for the common cold. Mark David Wright, a seventh-grader, and Michelle Vawter, an eighth-grader, claimed the Edison Award, which includes a $2,500 college scholarship from CollegeAdvantage. "We spent a lot of work and time on this to try to live up to their standards," Mark David Wright said. Their invention, Immunity Insurance, "releases proven cold-fighting compounds into the body immediately after the cold virus enters your body and well before you feel the symptoms of a cold," Wright said. He and Vawter first came up with the idea in October and then spent six to seven months perfecting their cold-fighting compound.

More InventorsStudent lands first-place prize for ‘KatabeltWestgate Alternative School first-grader Tyler Grayson Morefield received a first-place prize in the kindergarten through second-grade portion of the event for his invention, the "Katabelt."A first-grader at Westgate Alternative School was among the winners of Columbus' regional Invention Convention last month. Morefield, who practices karate, said he created the belt to help fellow students remember their kata, a set of choreographed movements. "The 'Katabelt' helps me remember what moves come next in the kata so people won't have to think what's going," Morefield said.Lisa Morefield, Tyler's mother, said the Invention Convention acts as a good learning tool. "At this age I think they start to recognize that things are going on in the world that are a little scary," Read the whole story on ThisWeekNEWs.com

More InventorsCold Conqueror team headed to national science competitionState Rep. Marian Harris (D-Columbus) meets with home-schooled students (from left) Michelle Vawter, 15, of Westerville, Allie Frazier, 15, of Sunbury, and Mark David Wright, 14, of Westerville, at the Vern RiffeCenter Monday, June 1. The students, who won the regional competition for eCYBERMISSION, have been investigating a cure for the common cold. Three local teens will travel to the nation's capital next month to show off their latest invention -- a possible cure for the common cold. Their product, Cold Conqueror, takes a proactive approach to the problem, Vawtersaid. "Our invention is a once-a-month nasal inhalant that eliminates the common cold," she said. "It does this by releasing our compound before someone starts feeling the symptoms. They take it once a month, and it helps their bodies to fight off the cold 24-7, releasing when the germs enter the body, not just when the patient takes the inhalant."
