The Basics
• Find an author, date and title• Other necessary details – publisher, URL,
pages, volume etc. • Adopt a consistent approach and format
accordingly• Take your information from the title page of a
book or cover for a report

• Find the mistakes in the reference list you are given.

Should I use this?
• Is the source you are using GOOD QUALITY?• Avoid websites with no author/corporate
author details.• Is the information out-of-date/old?• Blogs/personal websites – look for links to a
article that informed that post, read it and reference it instead of the blog. (Same goes for Wikipedia!!)

• Work in pairs or small groups.• Decide how good each source is and rank
them from best (1) to worst (8).• What would you use in your
assignments/dissertation? Why?• How can we determine QUALITY?• You have 10 minutes! Go!!

EndNote – Software to help
• You can use EndNote online to help with referencing.
• Takes a little time to learn. Workbook available in Blackboard.
• But, it can save you lots of time when writing up.
• Remember - it’s only as good as the information entered in the fields.
